FSN Rivalry Rewind 2006: Michigan 31 MSU 13
I've been meaning to upload this to my YouTube for awhile now. I've already got the documentary part of this DVD from 2006 up.
Here is an alternate film of the 2006 game. Includes interviews from coaches (LOL John L Smith) and fans from the 2006 Michigan-MSU game.
Game highlights are shot from the endzones and have radio audio.
31-13 with a 24-0 start to the game. Coming soon again to The Big House.
This game was over right from the get go. After the Manningham deflection TD the a-hole sparty fan sitting in a row behind me gave me the ol' "what did school did you go to" shit. I guess he wanted to take solace in the wal-mart wolverine non-sense.
You know things are going good because that's how those losers are now. That's all they have left.
It usually always is but in 2005 , I remember the shit-talking for those buttholes was at an all-time as they were guaranteeing a victory over Michigan . Michigan was struggled to not be under .500 and MSU was starting their "Stanton for Heisman" campaign and having a very nice season so far , and were all set to get revenge at home the year after the Braylon-Fest . But Michigan "upset" then
In overtime . And then 2006 , MSU's spirits were at an all-time low where all they could do is talk about a retail store them seem to be obsessed with ...Walmart .
I was at that game and I remember none of it except the weird Johnny Spirit dude painted in green riding his bike around the Crisler lot.
I was there also and all I remember is drew stanton sitting on an equipment container looking around like he didn't care. It was bizarre. He was all by himself and wasn't trying to rally his teammates or anything. It looked like he had totally given up.
Good thing the Lions took him in round 2 over Woodley and David Harris
Yup. What a dumb pick. Although at least those two went on to have successful careers instead of playing for a terrible organization.
Ahhh, the John L. Smith years, where a Spartan coach would jog up to the podium, clap his hands and excitedly say, "OK.....Michigan Week!"
I will admit, those days were very amusing.....and quite correct too. Glad that it seems like it is getting back into that mode, although I would think Dantonio might break his face showing that much enthusiasm.
Guy got four years at MSU and gets zero credit for the turnaround under Dantonio. Dude went 0-4 against us and the first three games were decided by a TD or less (2 games went to OT). The only blowout was to the best team we had in almost a decade. A couple breaks from the refs or Spartan Bob and he could've been 2-2 or 3-1 against us.
He inherited a mess and left Dantonio with a better roster than what he received.
Wait, Staee outscored Michigan 13-7 at the end of the game? Must have been a close game.
The Tigers and Yankees were in a playoff game while this game was going on. I don't remember which one, exactly. I just remember switching over during commercial breaks.
This game guaranteed Drew Stanton's 0-4 record against Michigan. He was very vocal in his dislike for us but his insults involved turning the Desmond Howard video game cover over and saying the family refers to us as the University of Puke....which is about the equivalent of calling someone a doo-doo head.
Manningham catches were very porn like, especially in this game. Back when I could somewhat stomach him, Mike Valenti told Sparty fans the Monday after this game on the radio that this was a blowout despite the ho-hum score. He said Michigan didn't even try to score the entire second half and we could have won by 60 if we wanted to.
I forgot about the fumble being overturned on our first scoring drive because replay showed Henne's arm going forward. You might recall the previous year's game in East Lansing when we were about to go up two scores late in the 4th quarter but then Henne was hit and it was ruled a fumble despite his arm clearly going forward. The MSU guy returned it 70 yards to tie the game and it had to go to overtime.
Thanks for posting this.
Tigers won (don't remember the score). What I do remember was Kenny Rogers pouring champagne on fans and a state trooper that was supposed to be keeping fans from rushing the field. That night and then the following Saturday (beating PSU and winning the ALCS) were the best back-to-back Saturdays of my sporting life.
Maglio's home run to send the Tigers to the World Series happened just minutes before the Penn State game started. It was absolute perfect timing.
The Tigers/Yankees element is one of my enduring memories of this game. It was especially weird because fans of both UM & MSU were cheering together at the Tigers' updates - an extremely rare moment where the rivalry briefly broke down. Then, of course, we returned to focus on the football game, and the Sparties had to sink back into depression. One of the most purely perfect days in my time in the Big House student section.
Yep. Tigers-Yankees was the defining feature of this game to me. We were so much better than them that the football game was never in doubt, and the scoreboard operators were switching the video feed to the baseball game frequently throughout the second half. Bonderman was pitching - game 4 of the ALDS, where they eliminated the Yankees after dropping game 1. (Remember Nate Robertson? And then they got the crucial rain delay the night of game 2 to switch it to a day game with Verlander pitching. I watched that game on the tiny CRT TV that was embedded in the wall of the Union downstairs.)
I remember MSU coming out in linked arms as at that point in the season John L's departure was rapidly becoming a foregone conclusion.
More people had more interest in that game then this M-MSU game. Has 4:30pm been the latest start for a MIchigan-MSU game?
The radio call made me realize how much I miss Frank Beckman.....and Bob Ufer
I remember three things about that day:
1) The total beat-down of Sparty!
2) The crowd also being into the Tigers-Yankees game. That was the day the Tigers eliminated the Yankees and we were able to update the baseball game--with video--on the scoreboards during timeouts. (Lloyd even joked in the postgame show that he heard the Tigers score more often than the football game.)
3) The unusual 4:30 start (because of the baseball playoffs) made it a night game by the 4th quarter. And a giant full moon rose over the east side of the stadium.
(Exactly one week later, the Tigers eliminated the A's on Magglio's walk-off HR...just in time to switch over to watch the Michigan defense's beat-down of Penn State in State College.)
The PSU game was the Alan Branch hit. The one time I went to happy valley, before it was really weird to go there.
WD, is that you at 13:34?
IIRC, this was the game where Manningham suffered a minor knee injury. He returned before the end of the season, but wasn't quite the same player. He had been completely uncoverable pre-injury.
Carr's platonic ideal play, execution excelsior.
