Frustration

Three years on and UM still plays poor defense. I know this defense is young, but OSU has had young defenses and none has looked as bad as UM's.

Will we ever see a good defense with RR as coach?

If you told me we would hold MSU to 34 points before the game, I would have guaranteed a win. The offense failed to execute and everyone knows we can't afford mistakes.

5-1.  Everybody cool down.

Agreed!  Best case for our D everyweek is that they give our offence a chance to win.  Our D is not nearly at the level where it is going to win games yet, we just have to except that.  They did enough to give our offence a chance.  If you need to bitch about a side of the ball, why not the O, the D is a known.  It was the O that under performed.  The offence will not be contained to 17 points on a  regular basis!!

Yeah the offense is the better unit and the one that must do the dictating to the other team.  It needs to jump out to leads and create urgency and fear in the opposition's offense.

The offense failed in that mission right from the get go today when it fouled up the first drive.

30 points against Iowa next week.  That isn't asking a lot for an offense this good that is also mostly healthy.

No, we will never have a good defense under RR because he does not care about defense, and the few defensive players he cares to recruit are underweight  midgets that will end up getting destroyed by the 10 ft tall 700 pound behemoths that occupy the Big Ten. He failed to realize that in the Big Ten, you need to have 10 ft tall 700 pound behemoths because attributes such as speed, agility, explosiveness, execution, and most importantly, depth and experience just don't work. He is also losing the oh so important in-state recruiting battle, so no, Michigan will never have a competent defense while he is here.

That is a bullshit response to a legitimate concern. 4 of our 5 wins came despite of our terrible defense. We are in a world of trouble if our offense needs to never turn the ball over and score on 90% of our possessions.

How can you watch the nation's worst defense allow marginal teams to stay close in games against the nation's best offense and not get upset? It infuriates me. I envy yallz ability to find a silver lining that doesn't really exist.

We'll continue winning games this season because of our great offense, and everybody will be pleased. But until our defense improves we will continue losing to teams with mediocre offenses and decent defenses. Yesterday proved that.

There is one person to blame for the defense: Gerg. Even with a limited roster, we have players who can make plays on defense. We see evidence of that in the rare moments Gerg asks them to make a play. Yet he makes reactionary playcalls that force them to play on their heels.

The best defense against us is a good offense. If a team jumps out to a lead all they have to do is methodically run the ball to pick up first downs and keep Denard off the field. If our defense can't get off the field then it's impossible for our offense to stage a comeback. Time of possession is an overrated, almost meaningless statistic. NUMBER of possessions does matter, though. We have a better chance of winning games in which each team has 20 possessions versus a game in which each team has 10 possessions. The fewer possessions we have, the more harmful each turnover/non-scoring drive becomes. On the flip side, not many teams will outgun is in a high-paced offensive shootout.

If everybody is content with beating shitty teams and losing to balanced teams, then I guess you shouldn't be concerned with the defense. I have higher standards. I'm talking championships. Minimum 8-peat. Half of our team is up to the task; the other half is not. Until they are, I will not "relax."

(FWIW, Coach Rodriguez is doing exactly what we brought him here to do. The offense has made almost incomprehensible improvement since his arrival.)
