Frozen Four/NHL open thread

Submitted by Yostbound and Down on

Providence has advanced to the final.

BU- North Dakota is next on ESPN2.

Wings/Habs on FSD right now. Lots of other big matchups tonight in the NHL as well. Could the Pens miss the playoffs? Can the Kings squeak in?

ETA: Pens are off tonight but Sens and Bruins both have games that they could pass them in the standings.

Providence making the final is a great example of why trying to predict what happens in the tournament is hopeless.

They were knocked out of the Hockey East tournament right away in a best-of-3 series by unranked New Hampshire, 2 games to 1. Then they snuck into the tournament as the last at-large and proceeded to beat #4 Miami, #5 Denver, and #8 UNO in 3 games.

The relative home ice advantage / short travel times they've had throughout the tournament thus far is certainly worth noting though

Now we need just one point or losses by all teams behind us to remain the six seed. A win COULD give them the five, depending on how the Islanders do in their last game.

UND was the best team in the nation in 2011 and got embarrassed by Shawn Hunwick.

UND lost to Yale, the last team in the tournament in 2013 in a regional that was handed to them by Minnesota choking the night before. Yale did get hot and win the whole thing, but still lol Hakstol.

UND allowed a game winning goal with 0.6 seconds in regulation left in the Frozen Four last year.

And tonight.....OHHH HAKSTOL

If there's any other Wild fans in here, we just won our TWELFTH road game in a row, this time 4-2 @ Nashville, which ties the Red Wings for the all time NHL record. We have a chance to break the record on Saturday in St. Louis. This one was without Dubnyk starting and without Parise, Nino, or Vanek. Great effort. Also clinches us either the 6 or 7 seed in the West.

Thought ND was totally out of it when BU went up 4-1.  Then BU goalie had the most colossal brain fart I have seen in college hockey (trumping Nagelvort's effort at Munn a month ago that I saw right in front of my face).  BU was on the power play and ND iced the puck.  The goal went to play the puck and nonchalantly misplayed the puck and kicked in right in front of the open goal where the ND player was to lightly tap it in.  It gave the Fighting No Names a chance to tie it up before BU scored the empty netter to put it away.
