Friday POSBANG Thread: 1/3/14 Edition

Submitted by justingoblue on

Gettin' close to the weekend, MGoBoard, what ya got to posbang for?

Pretty nice little Saturday here, we're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time.

After two loooong weeks at home with two sick children, we are going out tonight to watch the OSU game. I will be so happy to be out of the house, I won't even mind if OSU wins.

My posbang is for the schedenfreude I feel reading a board dominated by Michiganders: though it is chilly here in the south (yet to hit 40 and it's already the afternoon!), I feel so much better reading about how cold it would be if I still lived in Ann Arbor.

I go away on holiday and return to the old voting system? What a great thing to see!  Just when I thought I got out, the voting system pulled me back in.  Happy friday everyone! Can't wait for the "what are you drinking?" thread.

The fam and I fly back to Shanghai tomorrow. 14 hour flight. Trying to decide if I should fly back here for the first football game next year but probably not. We did get to go to the Holy Cross hoops game so that was nice. I am way overly optimistic about the 2014-5 Michigan teams already!

January (and probably most of Q1) looks like it's shaping up to be quite a tire fire in my working world. I need a posbang and I need it bad.

Or maybe I'll just keep watching Kari Byron do this ....

The Good: Car wouldn't start this morning so I'm working from home while sipping coffee in my boxers. GF left before me and no one was around for me to be able to get a jump from so I'm waiting on the tow guy to get here.

The Bad: I probably need a new battery and or alternator. Hoping just the battery since it's an original on an 06.

I feel your pain, too .... Went outside yesterday to dig out from the recent dumping of snow to find that my 15 year-old snow blower finally went to that Big Driveway in the Sky. Sure, I could probably have it fixed, but why do that when I can get a brand new one?

I told my wife I needed this one, but I'm not sure she's going for it:

Evidently, she doesn't care that I want to remain warm and dry while I clear the snow this winter.

Ya think? Once I get it jumped I'll take it in and get it tested. It's just not the best time for me to have to spend money on car problems (new semester and new job next week). I bought the car used in 2012 (06 Model) so if it's the original battery in there I'm surprised it went on this long and hopefully that's it.

I have had some problems that might indicate an alternator issue (mainly dimmer headlights and a really funky sounding noise on the drive back from Chicago this Tuesday).

Sucks about your blower man. My dad's finally broke down recently and he was pretty bummed. We got him a new one last minute for Christmas instead of the usual clothes that he has enough of.

Then you may be right about the alternator. If, after you get your car jumped, the engine runs for a while then dies, it's likely the alternator because the battery will have been providing power to the ignition circuit and it's run out of juice.

If the vehicle stays running, it may in fact be the battery, but you should have a service tech you trust check the voltage coming from the alternator while the car is running (if you know how to do it, then it's an easy DIY job). The voltage should be in the range between 13 and 14.5 V (give or take).

It may also be the alternator belt. If it's an original, it could be wearing, no longer taught, out of alignment, etc. If you know where to look on your particular car, check the belt for wear, proper tension, etc.

There are a few other things you could check, but the above two should give you a pretty good indication of the problem.

Good luck!
