And what is everyone having as we head into the Christmas weekend? I'm getting an earlyish Sam Adams "White Christmas" in and will probably switch later to a half-glass of Sailor Jerry's (can't get too crazy since it's an early start tomorrow on the road to Atlanta for Christmas), all the while enjoying the simple idea of being inside with Christmas music queued up on the stereo with snow on the ground and a breezy wind outside. Beautiful evening.
Friday night Thread for the Spreading of Holiday Cheer and Detailing of Consumption of Delicious Alcoholic Beverages
Just some Sprecher Vienna Amber Lager. Nothin special. Going to watching the beef obradysbowl on the iPad... I guess... Since the wife is watching a series of terrible TV shows
Cold Coors light.
I am at the end of a Sam Adams winter classics pack, so all I have left is a couple Sam Adams Old Fezziwig Ale's and a Holiday Porter.
It's both funny and sad that this thread should appear now - I might actually end up working tomorrow, I just learned on a conference call (called in from home). Even though we have only about 9,000 out across the DTE service territory, they still apparently want people in to make storm packages for crews. This is why I opted for the afternoon shift, of course, so that way there is a chance they call me and say "never mind". Not exactly how I planned the start to my holiday.
For now, of course, a crisp, refreshing Hoegaarden and the wait until the Beef O'Brady's St. Petersburg Bowl.
Commendable response from your DTE brethren tonight; not two hours ago I called in to report a huge branch hanging from a wire, and just watched them remove it five minutes ago.
Needs to spend more on vegetation management.
Dos Equis Amber and the last sign of decent Mexican food before flying to MI
My sons home from UM. He brought all his laundry, his TV, video game console, and a fifth of Jack Daniels Honey. I'm going to share a drink with my underage son, then ask where he got the goods.
We all know dad has the weed
Schlafly Winter ESB
Just got home from bdubs now watching Christmas vacation with some fat tire.
"You serious Clark?"
Christmas Ale. God bless the Michigan micro brews
Out of BB4D after 80 people. Not cool
Knob Creek while waiting to catch a flight to go to work. Chill I start tomorrow.
Captain morgan rum and coke.
Red wine, because that is what we have left on hand after the fiancee took off for Xmas in San Jose this week. (If I still lived in Michigan, I'd be jealous. Because I live in the South, I am glad to be going back to MI.)
and some Newcastle.
Dogfish Head 90 IPA at the store, but decided that I need to finish what is in the house. I think it's a Dirty Bastard for me tonight.
MMMMMM...New Belgium Winter Variety Pack.
Snowdrift Vanilla Porter. Might have a summer shandy from the survival pack later.
I'm enjoying some delicious water while studying for my final two exams tomorrow.
Do tell, what sick institution is it where you study?
I'm taking some class at UW-Madison. I graduated from Michigan a couple of years ago.
Not sure why they have to have exams on the 22nd...
Getting ready to head out and do it up one more time before my brother moves to Colorado next week. I don't know what I will be drinking but I'm sure there will be lots of it!
Ended up being some Blue Moon and Stella draft. Now just some good old Bud Light back at the house!!
along with some Troegs Perpetual...the CRM finishes like syrup...I feel like its a more acceptable way to re-enact the scene from Super Troopers and not end up with diabetes
At beef o bradys watching beef o brady bowl with a tall smithwick.
White Russians, need my calcium, I'm old.
Because I'm out of Sam Adams, and Fat Tire...oh well, it works...Christmas vacation starts.
I decided I should take the plunge and try scotch, and maybe see if I can score a bottle under the Christmas tree. I went to the big liquor store near me and got pours of Glenlivet 12 and Ardmore Traditional Cask, I liked the Ardmore better. It runs about thirty dollars a bottle, and I'm assuming there are more than a couple opinions on a good bottle to start with, preferably something under $45 or so.
I know it is pricey...but if you actually bite the bullet and take your chances on, say, an 18-year, you'll be pretty blown away by how smooth and mellow it is in comparison. My wife, who dislikes all things whiskey/scotch related, was even a convert when presented with the good stuff.
One interesting scotch that I quite liked was Ardbeg...it was like drinking a campfire. Seriously. It smelled and tasted like a campfire. Mmmm...campfire.
I think what I'll try to do is find a bar with a halfway decent selection and work my way through what you guys wrote, except for what MABW recommended since I should be able to just grab a bottle of that the next time I want a bottle of something. Otherwise, the $85+ per bottles just aren't in the cards on my student budget.
For a good price I suggest giving Grand MacNish a try....I like scotch but I like rum better, and the MacNish is smooth and sweet enough to be almost rum-like. It's no pricier than your basic bottle of Captain Morgan.
If you're willing to go a little above $45 and like peaty scotches I can't recommend Ardbeg Uigeadail enough.
Just go with Jameson. Never dissapoints. If you're looking for something a bit more fancy you should buy Red Breast. Best Scotch/Irish Whiskey I've ever had in my life. Better than shit 10x the price IMO.
Scotch and Irish whiskey: not nearly the same thing. This is horrible advice.
I live in Ohio -- yes, I know, please provide the requisite chorus of boos -- and around here, Great Lakes Christmas Ale is perceived as the Second Coming. Granted, it's good. I actually celebrate most of the GL catalog.
I have told this to my Ohio-based friends, some who have scoffed at me in disgust until I actually made them do a side-by-side taste test: 12 Dogs of Christmas Ale is superior to Great Lakes Christmas Ale. Try it for yourself. It's similar -- yet, it's better. Plus, hey -- it's higher alcohol content, so it has that going for it, too.
Drinking "The Beast" from Avery, all I need is one of those bad boys and I'm all set for a few hours
I've been all over the place today- Yuengleng (sp?) at breakfast, Miller Lite at lunch and sailor jerry by the pool for happy hour(s). Will figure something out for the evening or just stick with Jerry.
AKA Key West
Fireball Whiskey and Dr. Pepper....nice way to start the holidays.
A man after my own heart.
Picked up some Fireball this week. Have only had shots of it, but will try it with Dr. Pepper- sounds great, thanks
Anyone tried the Newcastle Winter IPA? Just saw it the today and was intrigued, but grabbed a few other 6ers instead.
Last day of vacation so were cleaning out the bar (open bottle = buy bottle) so chivas regal brugal white and dark Dominican rum and Presidente. The only beer produced in the Dominican. Surprisingly good pilsner.
Delivered fresh from Waterbury, VT. Canned only three days ago. If there's a better beer in the world, I haven't had it yet.
Anyone got their hands on one of these yet? Mine is enroute from Belgium as we speak. Nine days away.
Had some yesterday. Effing tremendous.
And I got a couple of bottles from him. Had one last week. It's very good, but IMO, there are other comparable Belgians that are much easier to find. To each his own, but I'd much rather have any of the following: Zombie Dust, Hopslam, or Heady Topper.
For the alternate list while I wait!
375 ml Everclear
1-2 cups Brown Sugar
1 Cup Honey
1/2 Gallon Apple Juice
1/2 Gall Apple Cider
Mix and brew together. MMM
BTW: Is Everclear sold in Michigan?
It's not in Ohio, Buckasses...
I'm going going back to michi michi
Drinking a few tall blue moons on tap at a bar back home. Damn it feels good to be done with finals..
I'm going with Coors Light and Blue Moon.
KBC Lift Bridge Ale. Merry Christmas the the whole lot of ye!
Black Out Stout. On draft. Very good.
Whatever they are serving at the neighbor's holiday open house. In about an hour my daughter will board the coming-home plane in Athens after a long semester abroad. Unless there is a cab strike, or an air traffic controller strike, or a blizzard. At least the end of the world has passed.
...over crushed ice
Can't wait till I get my hands on some Wake N Bake.
Leinie's Snowdrift Vanilla Porter. Quickly becoming one of my favorite winter beers. Very toasted-malty.
Spaghetti, maple syrup and ELF. OK, some Royal on the rocks...enjoying the start of the holidays.
From Two Brothers. Pretty good, and brewed just down the road from me.
and some Maker's on ice. Getting my $20 worthout of watching my 14 year old daughter warpping presents for me.
Just hear Cheech/Chong's "Santa's Old Lady" or whatever it is. Made the night complete. On Chewie, On Tabo, On Blitzen, Get up Beto."
All I need at this point is Mackenzie Bros. Christmas shit with Geddy Lee.
Bob & Doug's seminal "12 Days of Christmas" does not feature the Gedster, of course...but I always couple that with "Take Off" (which, of course, does).
"I think it ranks up there with 'Stairway to Heaven.'"
ok. google is my friend (so is sobriety apparently). You are correct. Take Off is its own Magnum Opus (with G Lee), and their 12 days of Xmas a whole different animal.
Youtubed both. All is well.
Take off eh.
Dogfish Head Chicory Stout; first time having it, pretty solid. Merry Christmas.
Big fan myself. So a pos bang for you.
Got home from work to find out theTV has died..... drinking Great Lakes Christmas Ale
I need a new TV any suggestion, something internet hookup ready. anybody??
If money is no object, I recommend the Panasonic plasma VT. The black levels are incredible. They bought the Kuro technology from Pioneer, who stopped making their tvs, but it used to be the best that money could buy (the 2008 model -the last year to be produced - is still highly sought on the second-hand market, but I doubt they're internet ready, unlike the Panasonic).
Pure hopiness. The Brewery Imperial Stout, made from black stout.
Tough to get on the East coast, but I recently was able to land some Duet, Nelson, and the Pure Hoppiness. I think Duet goes toe-to-toe with Pliny.
I never post in these threads, because I'm not a big drinker, but hey I just had my UM MD/PhD interview a few weeks ago, I've got a few acceptances for next year already, I should celebrate right?
I'm sipping on a fine bottle of Kirin Ichiban!
SoCo and Coke for me and lovin it! Go Blue!
Went to Perrin in Comstock Park. Nate Walser (formerly of Founders, came up with the recipe for KBS) is the brewmaster and he makes some really solid beers. My favorite from this trip was their I2D2 Black IPA.
Jack Daniels on the rocks. Winter break is on.
Merlot, and grading term papers. Looking forward to Xmas in Michigan soon!
Aged in oak bourbon barrels. Very tasty and potent.
Made by Alltech out of Lexington, KY? This stuff is wonderful.
Drinking JW Black Lable, where did half the bottle go?
And unwinding with some Crown from a gift set that a buddy from work gave me today. I was totally surprised by gifts from two co-workers today. Then all of a sudden, it got a little dusty, and I think somebody started chopping up some onions or something.
Back in the hometown, Dearborn, that is. Just walked into Howell's and it'll be a pitcher of PBR for me. Happy holidays and Go Blue, all!
Mohawk and faygo (red of course)
Blatz it is for me. Woof!
To be friday night...red wine. A holiday tradition
