Friday Night Shut-ins The Sequel: What are you drinking?
MGoBoozehounds, it's been seven weeks since last we shared beer recommendations, cocktail recipes and bonhomie. Inspired by DTs and today's discussion of hot buttered apple cider with rum, I ask you again: what are you drinking, and is it nice?
Currently, I'm on a Molson Golden in a 12oz bottle, augmented by a wee dram of Caol Ila 12-year.

but when I do, I make it a Dos Equis!" (actually quit drinking, just wanted to say that)
September 25th, 2009 at 6:48 PM ^
I sure as hell don't prefer Dos Equis. But then again, I'm more like the world's most uninteresting man. Written before BrayBray1 made his point.
Beck's tonight, thank you.

Trying this year's Bell's Oktoberfest. Also picked up some newcastle, don't usually post but I do love to try different beers!
September 25th, 2009 at 6:55 PM ^
but I lean more towards Ardbeg Uigeadail. (My M Law buddy has both and more in his cabinet) Just not tonight. I can STILL feel the forty of OE 800 (HG) from Tuesday night. It's possible that the several earlier beers from Tuesday bear some relationship to that massive lack of judgment/near death experience. Next time, I will just go straight to paint thinner.

Highlands Seasonal Micro. Tastes like joy... and awesome.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:00 PM ^
Trying to get some work done before I start with the game at 9...but when it does, either Yuengling or Gin and Tonic. Might be a gin kind of night.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:04 PM ^
My last drop of Johnnie Walker, or for that matter any booze in the house at all, that's what. I have to run to the store tomorrow, obviously.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:08 PM ^
Bombay Sapphire and Tonic.
Also Natty Lite (poor)

I dont know yet, Im about to hit up The Beer Store which, for those who have never been to Canada, is the best store EVER!
September 25th, 2009 at 7:21 PM ^
2nd best chain of liquor-esque stores ever. The first is Spec's in Houston, mainly because of it's main store. If you balance it on a per store basis, The Beer Store wins hands down.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:39 PM ^
Only because Canada has really retarded laws about who can sell beer.
September 25th, 2009 at 8:06 PM ^
Not as screwed up as Pennsylvania. Beer by the case from a distributor, or by the six-pack from only certain bars (at bar prices, of course). Alcohol and wine from the state Wine & Spirits store. Only about 20% of each are open on Sunday, from 12-5, with a special license needed.
September 25th, 2009 at 8:14 PM ^
Actually, when I was in State College (being a college town probably had something to do with this), going to the beer distributor before the Blue/White game was one of the best experiences I had. I was able to buy from a store rather easily, and for prices I didn't find too extravagant.
That said, I had a group of 30 or so PSU guys out to get me as drunk as they could so I'd give their campus group a good grade.
September 25th, 2009 at 8:25 PM ^
Thank you. Living here after living in Michigan has been absolute hell. Draconian laws involving alcohol absolutely suck.
September 25th, 2009 at 11:24 PM ^
For those of you who haven't been to Canada, one of the leftovers of Prohibition is the near-monopoly that the Beer Store and LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) stores have on alcohol distribution. Breweries and wineries can have retail outlets, but other than that you can't buy beer anywhere else.
The effect is to make alcohol more expensive and to make it more difficult for craft brewers in Ontario to sell their product, limit the selection of imports available and increase the price of beer.
One result is that here in the largest city in Canada the best selection of beer in any Beer Store or LCBO in town is comparable to that of, say, the Target in Columbus Fucking Ohio. It's really pathetic. In Madison, WI, many of the grocery stores had a better selection. In Portland, OR, I found convenience stores with a better selection of beer.
And no, I am not at all bitter. Not one bit. No. Really. Why do you keep asking?
September 25th, 2009 at 7:20 PM ^
Just finished a pumpkin ale I brewed a a month or so ago. Thinking I'll grab a brown porter next.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:24 PM ^
I just placed a full mash Chocolate Hazelnut Porter in the keg last night. I am hoping it will be carbonated by 12:00 tomorrow.
I also have a smoked Scottish ale fermenting
September 25th, 2009 at 7:27 PM ^
Paul and Tim started on their "Joe Paterno Very" Old Ale last weekend. Paul said their "Charlie Shaped Like a Pear" Weiss turned out really well. I wish I still had time to brew. So much cheaper than buying it.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:34 PM ^
I cannot, paint, draw, act, sing, dance.....you get the idea. But I can design and brew very good libations. While those with more artistic skills are able to please others through subtle skills, I used a sledgehammer of high original gravity.

2 shots Captain Morgan Spiced Rum...1 shot Butter Shots and 2 oz diet cream soda over ice
September 25th, 2009 at 9:39 PM ^
the diet cream soda there, as you don't want to have too many calories in that drink.

My friend told me about a beer called Hebrews. Would you guys recommend it?
September 25th, 2009 at 7:35 PM ^
He'brew is a group of beers by Smaltz brewery. I've had the Genesis Ale. It was pretty good. I've heard the Smaltz freak brand is better. I couldn't tell you though.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:32 PM ^
Probably the bottle of Jolly Pumpkin Bam Biere Farmhouse Ale sitting in the beverage fridge. If I don't crack that open, it'll be Bell's Oktoberfest.
Later on, I may shift to manhattans with Buffalo Trace bourbon and Vya vermouth.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:38 PM ^
Will be trying several different beer "flights."
September 25th, 2009 at 7:46 PM ^
I love me some Ashley's. If I didn't live in this God-forsaken state, I'd be there.
The state of Indiana = epic fail. Not as bad as the state to the east... but epic fail nonetheless.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:49 PM ^
I miss Ashley's...
About to crack open a Smithwicks then going to move on to some Yuengling that friends brought in town and conveniently left last weekend...
TGIF all...
September 25th, 2009 at 8:55 PM ^
The last time I was at Ashley's I had Dragon's Milk. Highly recommend it if you're into stouts.

first hockey beer of the year as I watch the Red Wings v. Maple Leafs and teaching my newborn daughter the evils of left wing lock hockey. So she's a week old-- she'll learn eventually to love the puck possession.

Cold Hop by Boulder Beer Company. Not too bad.
September 25th, 2009 at 8:10 PM ^
Just finished some fresh local brats off the grill, with roasted onions, sweet corn and sauerkraut. Now it's beer and Nevada/Mizzou then 16 hours until the Hoosierpocalypse.

Hell yes.
Vodka redbull to start off, followed by a couple vodka tonics, then taking a few PBRs with me when i head out for the night.

Sweetwater IPA and some Bells Oberon that I found at a random grocery store in ATL
September 26th, 2009 at 8:53 AM ^
I miss Sweetwater. That was my main beer when I lived in Atlanta. I hadn't had it in 2 years until I had a lay over in ATL on the way home from the WMU game. They had it on tap at the airport. 2 pints made the short flight to Tampa nice and easy.

SilverTree Vodka, had my first taste at Leopold Bros. distillery in Ann Arbor before their landlord ruined my favorite bar and made them move away. My god its smooth and delicious. I bought a bottle the day they closed, along with a bottle of their Pisco brandy, and absinthe. The vodka is just... wow... I am down to about 2-3 shots worth left in the bottle. I need to find someone to sneak it to me. :( Michigan can't have spirits shipped :(
September 25th, 2009 at 8:44 PM ^
Either Bell's Two Hearted IPA or Arcadia Ales IPA would be my beer of choice.

Plan on splitting a bottle or two of cheap wine with the girlfriend during dinner (most likely Big Kahuna Chardonnay, purchased from Fresh&Easy for the awesome price of $2 a pop). Then it'll be Cutty Sark over a mountain of ice until I pass out. The faster I drink it, the faster that 9am kickoff gets here. Go Blue!
September 25th, 2009 at 8:59 PM ^
I brought home a growler of the Hideout Brewery's "Purple Gang Pilsner". Light enough for me to wake up in an acceptable state to drive to AA tomorrow.
September 25th, 2009 at 9:18 PM ^
on occasion, but molson canadian is my house beer and what I quaf tonight. Still, it seems like the mgobeer really should be labatts BLUE!
September 25th, 2009 at 9:35 PM ^
Labatt pretty much became my beer of choice senior year (20+oz. for about $2 during happy hour at Good Time Charley's became a regular tradition). Now I can't find it anywhere here on the west coast (not popular enough for the chain grocery stores to carry it, apparently, and not snooty enough for the microbrew crowd). Very disappointing.
