Friday Night Shut-ins The Sequel: What are you drinking?

Submitted by WildcatBlue on

MGoBoozehounds, it's been seven weeks since last we shared beer recommendations, cocktail recipes and bonhomie. Inspired by DTs and today's discussion of hot buttered apple cider with rum, I ask you again: what are you drinking, and is it nice?

Currently, I'm on a Molson Golden in a 12oz bottle, augmented by a wee dram of Caol Ila 12-year.

I sure as hell don't prefer Dos Equis. But then again, I'm more like the world's most uninteresting man. Written before BrayBray1 made his point.

Beck's tonight, thank you.

but I lean more towards Ardbeg Uigeadail. (My M Law buddy has both and more in his cabinet) Just not tonight. I can STILL feel the forty of OE 800 (HG) from Tuesday night. It's possible that the several earlier beers from Tuesday bear some relationship to that massive lack of judgment/near death experience. Next time, I will just go straight to paint thinner.

I dont know yet, Im about to hit up The Beer Store which, for those who have never been to Canada, is the best store EVER!

Actually, when I was in State College (being a college town probably had something to do with this), going to the beer distributor before the Blue/White game was one of the best experiences I had. I was able to buy from a store rather easily, and for prices I didn't find too extravagant.

That said, I had a group of 30 or so PSU guys out to get me as drunk as they could so I'd give their campus group a good grade.

For those of you who haven't been to Canada, one of the leftovers of Prohibition is the near-monopoly that the Beer Store and LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) stores have on alcohol distribution. Breweries and wineries can have retail outlets, but other than that you can't buy beer anywhere else.

The effect is to make alcohol more expensive and to make it more difficult for craft brewers in Ontario to sell their product, limit the selection of imports available and increase the price of beer.

One result is that here in the largest city in Canada the best selection of beer in any Beer Store or LCBO in town is comparable to that of, say, the Target in Columbus Fucking Ohio. It's really pathetic. In Madison, WI, many of the grocery stores had a better selection. In Portland, OR, I found convenience stores with a better selection of beer.

And no, I am not at all bitter. Not one bit. No. Really. Why do you keep asking?

Probably the bottle of Jolly Pumpkin Bam Biere Farmhouse Ale sitting in the beverage fridge. If I don't crack that open, it'll be Bell's Oktoberfest.

Later on, I may shift to manhattans with Buffalo Trace bourbon and Vya vermouth.

first hockey beer of the year as I watch the Red Wings v. Maple Leafs and teaching my newborn daughter the evils of left wing lock hockey. So she's a week old-- she'll learn eventually to love the puck possession.

Just finished some fresh local brats off the grill, with roasted onions, sweet corn and sauerkraut. Now it's beer and Nevada/Mizzou then 16 hours until the Hoosierpocalypse.

SilverTree Vodka, had my first taste at Leopold Bros. distillery in Ann Arbor before their landlord ruined my favorite bar and made them move away. My god its smooth and delicious. I bought a bottle the day they closed, along with a bottle of their Pisco brandy, and absinthe. The vodka is just... wow... I am down to about 2-3 shots worth left in the bottle. I need to find someone to sneak it to me. :( Michigan can't have spirits shipped :(

Plan on splitting a bottle or two of cheap wine with the girlfriend during dinner (most likely Big Kahuna Chardonnay, purchased from Fresh&Easy for the awesome price of $2 a pop). Then it'll be Cutty Sark over a mountain of ice until I pass out. The faster I drink it, the faster that 9am kickoff gets here. Go Blue!

Labatt pretty much became my beer of choice senior year (20+oz. for about $2 during happy hour at Good Time Charley's became a regular tradition). Now I can't find it anywhere here on the west coast (not popular enough for the chain grocery stores to carry it, apparently, and not snooty enough for the microbrew crowd). Very disappointing.

The little lady is making drinks tonight... so currently it's 99 Bananas and OJ... tastes like friggin juice. But you can get schnockerd off of it. Saving my Captain and Coors for gameday (tradition). GO BLUE!!
