I've got a ton of money on Colorado tonight. They better win and win by more than 5 points. Please!!
Friday Night NCAAFB Thread - Colorado @ Toledo
Colorado is worse than I thought. This is not good.
For the highest rated RB out of HS, Darrell Scott is pretty slow.
I was just in Vegas and bet the Buffs heavy, too. When I told my friend, a CU alum, he told me I was an idiot and that, "Toledo is going to kick our F-ing ass." Guess he was right.
Sorry for your loss.
i wouldn't say toledo is worse. last year they were 3-9 so i doubt they will be worse. their qb passed for like 400 yards against purdue, just the defense couldn't get it done. they will be better. michiganstudent, this was a bad game to bet on. the glass bowl is a pretty hard place to play and i like the rockets' chances.
44-11 their last 55 games. Could be tough.
I was visiting family in Denver last weekend, and we checked out Boulder on Sunday for the pregame (beatdown) festivities. Maybe it was because the game was on a Sunday/Labor Day, but man, the campus was DEAD considering it was a rivarly game. A loss to Toledo would expadite Hawkins' pink slip which is what many-a CU fan was asking for.
I went there for my freshman year in 2007. It's not a huge pregaming campus like Michigan. Everybody is too busy smoking pot
Hey there I go to CU and the reason that everyone was bummed was because there were some high hopes this season and then the CSU fans celebrated on our field.. Pretty embarrassing, CU wont win more than 5 games this season and Hawkins will be gone by December. But to say we done pregame hard is ridiculous you were probably 18 when you got here and afraid to get in trouble.
hey now, I love CU and kinda wish I never left. WIth that said, all I'm saying is that yes Boulder parties hearty, but compared to the pregame festivities of Ann Arbor... not so much. Maybe it's the shear volume of people and parties but it was a shock.
My apologies I thought you were hating on CU. I love michigan football like I love my mother but Im glad I go to school here.
ha no problem man. I love the school here and think I'm a better fit, but man oh man Boulder cannot be beat. Waking up every morning and seeing the flat irons, parties on the Hill and most of all sun in the winter! Glorious. I don't care if it's in Denver, I'm coming back for med school
Amen brother, too bad the football team is terrible. Atleast I had my moment running on the field after West Virginia last year and Oklahoma the year before that.
I'll never forgive Colorado for that Hail Mary. As a Steeler fan, I could never forgive Kordell Stewart either.
That hurt. So did 10-13.
10-13 I'd argue was much worse and painful of a defeat than the Colorado "Miracle at Michigan". At least Colorado was actually good back then.
I did everything I could to let that one die.
I prefer to live remembering Bruce G's last second TD to beat #9 Pitt. Probably the greatest moment in Toledo football history.
of the Toledo/Purdue game - it is obvious that Toledo's D sucks, but I think they can score points.
CU looked awful against CSU, Hawkins is a terrible qb, CU's 5* shirtless RB is not allowed to touch the football, I really think the Rockets can score enough to win.
This game should be a great train wreck to watch.
Colorado might get debacled and further fade into Bolvian.
i will be at this game seeing how i attend the University of Toledo. looking forward to seeing Colorado in person. Big fan of Hawkins but disappointed with what he has done at Colorado. Toledo has a piss poor defense (although you wouldn't have known that from last year against Michigan, which i was at. must have been the only wolverine fan in that crowd.) with that said, if Toledo can hang some points on the board they can hang in there for a half. i think the second half Colorado should pull away. This should hold me over until junior varsity football at 12 on Saturday and then the Men of Meeeechigan run out the tunnel and hitting the banner with a nasty side of them.
Should be fun for a half. either way, its football right?
Hawk is just a placeholder - he is our Tommy Amaker: mild success mixed with crushing disappointment on the field; no dumbass self inflicted wounds (like the Barnett era strippers and weed and kegs and slush funds and assorted felonies less than outright murder off it).
We're getting our JB equivalent coach next season. If there is a god, anyway.
I met Hawk last year. Great guy. He would do really well in the MAC.
I just hope one of the two Schools (CU and UM) I have attended can beat Toledo haha. Maybe I'm just bad luck
CU's schedule this season as follows:
9-6-09 COLORADO STATE (Sun.) LOST 17-23
9-11-09 at Toledo (Fri.) - Toss-up
9-19-09 WYOMING - Likely win
10-1-09 at West Virginia (Thur.) - Likely loss
10-10-09 at Texas - Crushing loss
10-17-09 KANSAS - Likely loss
10-24-09 at Kansas State - Toss-up
10-31-09 MISSOURI - Likely loss
11-7-09 TEXAS A&M - Toss-up
11-14-09 at Iowa State - Likely win (?)
11-19-09 at Oklahoma State (Thur.) - Crushing loss
11-27-09 NEBRASKA (Fri.) - Definite loss
CU might only win 4 or 5 games this season. Hawk is in his 4th year in Boulder, and his team has taken a step back since a much-improved 2007 (6-7 with a bowl loss compared to 2006's 2-10 debacle).
But he seems like a good person, light years better than that scumbag Gary Barnett.
Toledo goes for two on a trickish-type play and fails.
by the Rockets - not so sure about the two point conversion attempt - they've been watching too much Boise State
Ahh Toledo has one of those ridiculous technicolor signal boards for their playcalling.
Also, how is it that Toledo's blue is allegedly darker than Michigan's and yet, it somehow seems more blue? (This is not a complaint, mind you. I love the depth of the navy in Michigan's jerseys, it's just confusing that Toledo's Midnight Blue would be darker than Michigan's Navy Blue.)
Also, Toledo just scored again on a 70 yard pass play. This is an entertaining team.
Toledo usually is nothing if not entertaining. High flying offenses that play way outside of their talent range are a staple at Secor and Dorr. Oh yeah.
Also a history of talented RB's. DaJuan Collins is just the next.
CU looks terrible - their pass defense is awful thus far.
Long pass for Toledo (mostly YAC), 13-0 with the PAT.
Colorado is not used to the low altitude. They should have come in a day sooner.
Every time CU seems about to do something right, they screw up.
so, who will be coaching the buffs next year?
Looks a whole lot better now.
And that freshmen for Toledo Eric Page is a local kid who many expect him to be a stud among the MAC competition.
Not looking good for the Buffs
Something you never want to hear as a coach of a team playing Toledo... "It just looks obvious that Toledo's skill players look much, much better." Ouch.
run defense is terrible - Smart move by Hawkins to run Scott a lot
tough to come away with no points on that.
I hate Toledo, but I can't pull for a team with Bologna Clemons on the roster.
In this classic rant from 2007, Hawkins sure makes it sound like the Buffs' summer conditioning program was mandatory. Why wasn't Rosenberg all over this?
object width="425" height="344">
So is Magnus around? If so, he can go ahead and Pink Slip Dan Hawkins.
CU is in trouble. UT's QB had a nice QB draw for the TD
Edit: jmblue, what the crap did you do? This thread just became Charlie Weis.
offense is looking pretty damn good - nice run by the QB - he's putting up big numbers
LOL - Bob Davie is now saying that Toledo is much faster than the Buffs - that is not a good thing
Hawkins is gonna go absolutely ballistic in the locker room at halftime.
Replay shows this as a legit hold.
This is so much better than I expected. Too bad I missed the first half.
Seriously, how bad is Colorado?
Really freakin' bad...eeeeesh. This is bleak.
Hawkins may have just knocked Al Groh off of the hottest seat in the country
My boys at the UT getting it DONE! WHOO!
anybody else hear the announcers say Toledo was split into teams in the off season for small stuff, and the losing team had to do 4am workouts?! hmmm where's Rosenberg?
Needed my 20th post and this was the first topic.
Needed my 20th post and this was the first topic.
So make a comment on the GAME! Geeze!
was that necessary?
So jamiemac, did you wind up betting on Toledo? I hope you didn't talk yourself out of it.
UT's D looks beatable, but CU just shoots themselves in the foot every time they do something positive. And that's not often. Purdue must be pretty good. I really hope Purdue beats Oregon.
The Big 10 needs some key wins tomorrow, and a decent game from OSU. I don't expect them to win, but they really need to keep it respectable against the men of troy.
CU does not look very physical...their tackling sucks and the blocking on offense is not very strong. Ooh, they just scored on a pushoff like in that '98 Rose Bowl (that non-call precipitated the missing 2 seconds, so I kinda think WSU fans should shut up about the clock officiating.)
UT just keeps running right past them.
This is pathetic.
Seeing CU lose like this makes me mildly happy.
The DB interfered against the receiver and the guy still brought the ball in! That is the defining image of this game.
Hawkins is in big trouble. This is his fourth season; if he can turn it around he can get another year, but the team is just not playing hard.
Seriously. Toledo looks very good this year... but not that good. The offense, yes, but the defese shouldn't be just shutting them down like this.
Woo fake punt just to have an illegal substitution
Perplexingly terrible football. It's like the players just don't know what they're doing, none of them, and they're just kind of cantering around and shoving guys on the other team. On the short passing plays, the routes are run but the ball is mistimed and in the wrong place; the line is a sieve; the catching is miserable, etc. Depressing.
Poor Hawkins, man. For such a seemingly down-to-earth dude, he's really put a bad product on the field.
Also: how about these ultra-bored announcers, trying their best to keep into the game.
Whoops! That wasn't so hot. So 24-37 now?
break for Colorado - if they score a td here they are right back in it.
But...lost 5 straight. Sound like anyone you know?
PS: I am a Carr fan, but was ready for something new by the end of his tenure.
Doesn't exactly apply, but still...
EDIT: And of course, right when I post this, Colorado gets back in the game. Figures.
A sign of life for Colorado on the fumble/touchdown? Toledo's defense is terrible...their secondary is getting gashed again and again.
On a side note, why does Toledo have a big blue bouncing condom for a mascot?
It's a rocket. All of the students prefer the dude in the astronaut getup. More "Rocketeer".
CU's defense needs to prove they can get a stop.
Not so much...
QB draw on 3rd and 6 TO THE HOUSE.
And there goes my bid for a comeback. QB run for the TD!
The way Colorado's offense is playing, I think they could still come back. Provided, of course, that their defense decides to...well...play.
EDIT: Oh...interception...never mind.
My timing is OFF tonight.
That is how you kill momentum. Wow
Opelt as Denard? I'll take that. That's a fast white man right there.
That's a good way to start the 4th quarter for Toledo. 60-some yard QB keeper for a touchdown. Got some momentum back.
Opelt has wheels, baby.
CU might not win a game all season. Their defense makes '08 Michigan look competent.
M's defense was pretty good in 08. It was the offense who was so terrible. The O's ineptitude lead to the D being too tired late in games.
We played last year?? I thought our season got cancelled after Boren ate all the footballs on his way out.
Hmmm, did a big play just happen? The 8 posts at the same time seem to indicate that it did.
Incredibly Surprising QB Draw lives here.
If not for some costly mistakes [Edit: by CU] at the wrong times, this game is a lot closer.
In the first half, Toledo's defense looked pretty good. In the second half, not so much.
Thought that's a nice interception.
It's not exactly like Toledo's playing perfectly either.
They are really bad (ha!).
So many missed tackles, missed assignments, etc.
I say this and sure enough UT intercepts a pass. Granted, it was a terrible pass and a total dead-duck.
Dare I ask if this is worse for Colorado than 2008 Toledo was for us?
Nothing was worse for anyone than 2008 Toledo was for Michigan.
Except for another game that, well, yeah...
Not even close. A few points:
1. Toledo looks really good this year. Last year they were terrible under a lame duck coach.
2. Toledo is beating Colorado. Last year, Michigan beat Michigan.
3. Toledo and Colorado have played before, some very storied, high energy games.
Alright, I guess I durst not ask.
While last year's game was atrocious, it is mitigated by being a competitive game when Michigan was undergoing a transition and an exceptionally crappy season. While Toledo is definitely better this year, they still are coming off a game where they were pummeled by Purdue (!). Furthermore, Colorado came into the season with high expectations. Finally, whenever a MAC team blows out a Big 12 team, there's a problem.
The MAC has been down for a couple of years now, but they are traditionally known as a "Giant Killer" conference, especially the higher profile, rich football history programs like Toledo, Ball State, and Central.
A few years ago, when Toledo Tom Amstutz was still the hot new coach on the block, Toledo was talking about leaving for the Big East to get a crack at the BCS.
I don't think that takes away from the fact that Toledo just beat the ever-loving shit out of Colorado. This is a hell of a statement and one way to say Colorado won't come close to contending in the Big 12 North.
is a terrible way to lose to another bad team. UT v2009 still could go on to do some things in the MAC. [Edit: Just thinking about it again, makes me throw up in my mouth.]
When was the last time you saw this many holding calls?
I swear about 65% of the penalties in this game have been for holding. Talk about undisciplined offensive lineman. Or just not very good.
RIP DAN HAWKINS
Toledo's D line may be bad, but their corners are freaking BALLHAWKS! HOLY CRAP!
Colorado really sucks
Man, even on replay... that guy came out of NOWHERE. Who is that guy? He wasn't on the team when I was interning in Toledo's Sports Information office a couple of years ago. Opelt and Collins were, but not him.
Sensational INT! Toledo is taking it to the entire Hawkins family...
They'll be singing with Ernie Hawkins before the night is over.
Honest question: has anybody ever seen a team fall apart this completely during a game?
I was going to say Wisconsin last year, but I guess they almost tied it there at the end. Actually I also remember in 2007 Colorado played Iowa State and looked to have it away after the first half, and it was all Iowa State in the second half. I remember being pretty pissed about it ha
Do my eyes deceive me or has Toledo just put up 50+ on a Big 12 team. Any bets on whether Hawkins lasts out the week?
Division 1 Football? Big 12?
This is ridiculous. Seriously.
"I have heard that people in CO think that Hawk is on the hot seat, and I just don't think that's anywhere close to true."
Rrrrright. I think this is the only risible thing I've ever heard out of Franklin's mouth.
jeeeeeeeeez when it rains it pours
Either Beckman is the greatest coach of all time, or Hawkin's career is OVER.
Or something close to both.
I thought CU would put up a fight in this game. How wrong I was...
Okay, I'm curious. OSU will be coming to Toledo after the USC game. May be interesting... My early predition 51-50.
If it were in the Glass Bowl, I'd actually give Toledo a slightly fighting chance. However, that game is in Cleveland at the Browns' stadium, so no dice.
That will be an unofficial OSU "home game".
Purdue 52, Toledo 31
Colorado just sucks.
Am I naive or something else to believe the state of Ohio would never allow Toledo to beat OSU during the Tressel era?
Maybe there is some historical example, but during the Tressel era?
Colorado showing signs of life again. If they actually manage to win here, that would simply be amazing. On a more realistic note, I'll give them credit for continuing to fight this late when they're getting blown out.
Toledo has their third teamers in.
Cody Hawkins just got destroyed on a helmet to helmet hit. Did you see him walking off the field? That was pretty vicious.
I feel sorry for Hawkins. Hope he's OK Classless head-hunting by Toledo. No need for that whatsoever.
Anyways, I'm now rooting for Colorado. Crap.
Dude - he dove headfirst into the endzone. Sometimes that shit just happens.
I don't think it was the LBs fault. Hawkins was moved by the other player and the hit ended up being lower than the other player thought it would be.
The announcers creaming their pants over this is, quite frankly, inappropriate.
"We're all just killing time now"
Best quote I've heard from a football announcer in awhile.
Unless the Buffs pull some sort of magical turnaround, it's hard to imagine Hawkins getting another year. They've actually gone backwards since he got there. It doesn't help that there are more than a few CU fans who think Cody doesn't deserve the starting spot at QB. Incompetence + nepotism is never a good combination if you're a coach. I thought he was a slam-dunk hire, but he's been a huge disappointment. First Dirk Koetter flames out at ASU, and now this... what is it about BSU coaches moving up? I wonder if Peterson will break the trend...
That was awful, right down to the last play.
...actually, after the last play. I have no ties to the Buffaloes, but it sort of pissed me off to see Cody walking around on the field smiling looking for someone to high-five. I didn't play Division I football (IT'S THE BIG TWELVE!!!) but when we got our asses handed to us in high school we sure as hell didn't stay around looking for someone on the other team to give some props to. Come to think of it, we only saw a few players in that shot, but you wouldn't have known from the body language that they just lost to a MAC team by 30 points. Some major attitude problems in Boulder.
(I know he had just taken a huge shot, but if one of us had a concussion we were under direct supervision of a trainer who made sure we got back on the bus without falling over.)
Sad how far Colorado football has fallen particularly for a school that won a national championship in the 90s. Interesting to see how some of those teams that won in the 90s have fallen. Gtech and Nebraska seem like they're bouncing back, but were down for awhile. Miami and FSU had a couple of rough seasons and are still struggling to get back. Colorado and Washington have both completely imploded.
uhh...kind of awkward...well...we might want to rethink making statements like this for a little while...right...hopefully we beat Notre Dame tomorrow...yeah
On a completely unrelated note, it's 2:00 in the morning and my dorm hall is really loud (which is the main reason I'm on this site). As I type this, the RA has finally gotten annoyed enough to shut them up, so I can go to sleep. Yeah, this is generally an hour that I post weird crap at. I should probably stop. Right...
And the noise has just picked up again. Ahh...the wonders of alcohol.
Touche. I was actually thinking more of the early 90s and all. Obviously everyone knows Michigan and UT were down last year, but many often forget Washington and Colorado won national titles not too long ago.
