Friday Night Drinking and What Was the Worst Job You Ever Had Thread

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Way busy this week, way busy.  Glad to be home now and about to start on an adult beverage or two. It occured to me also that summer time is the time when most people start to get their first 'real' job and that as you look back, some of those jobs you've had were dandies.

So I ask you, what was the worst job you ever had, and what are you drinking tonight to get over it?   And while you're at it, share fun stuff about your weekend plans.

Cheers.

Drinking a Blue Light and eating a cheesesteak from Mr. Spots.

My worst summer job really wasn't that awful but I only got about 20 of the 40 hours a week I was supposed to get due to lousy weather/the boss hiring way too many people. Kinda a bummer

Beer and cheesecake would be a whole other party.

I drove people up a river in Northern MI so they could kayak down it back to our shop. But like I said, cloudy summer/not much "seniority" and I ended up getting fewer hours than I hoped for.

Honestly not that awful of a job though, just chilled at the beach on the days offz

Engineering place with no A/C in an old school.  The owner was a douche, some of the people were even worse, empowered by the owner.  They were sued more times than I even know about and the person who caused most of it never has been held accountable.  I will be drinking Vodka tonight, alot of cheap Vodka to get over the place.  Hell I am in Washington state now it might need to be little stronger.

Worked as a Banquet Production Manager at one of the most loved restaurants. I was an alcoholic my entire 7 years with that company. Only way to work in that town. The owner was and is really bad. And her minions are as bad. So here is to you Frankencrap!

Drinking: Not your father's root beer.

I remember it seemed like such a treat every time I would go out west.  "Oh, we are going to Vegas next month? I HAVE to get me some Fat Tire while we're there!" Now that I have access to it all the time it seems like it is barely a step up from Blue Moon or Leinenkugel.

Drinking a double Jameson on the rocks. My worst job ever was working a roads/construction job after my freshman year at Michigan. All the full-time union guys hated me from Day 1 because, God forbid, I wanted a damn education.

I would say I have a tie for worst job. In high school I worked for Meijer a cart pusher. I only worked during the late fall through February and it happened to be a winter in which snow and ice were common. That sucked. I also did lawn care (weed control and fertilizer) for about 18 months. Summers outside for 9 hours a day is tough plus the guy was an asshole. He also owned a grass cutting company so he would throw us technicians on a crew to avoid paying us more ot than he should have.

Was as a dishwasher for a now defunct buffet style restaurant. The management was blissfully unaware of child labor laws so I often worked until 2 or 3 am during the summer.

Getting baked on mac and cheese off of buffet trays is no easy task, even with industrial strength cleaners.

That job did buy me my first car and a fair amount of beer though. All in all that was a great summer, and every job I've had since has been easy in comparison.

No booze tonight. Sick kid takes priority.

Worst job was washing dishes at Ponderosa.

Just got two new kegs for my kegerator.
Hurricane Kitty from Keegan Ales and
Electric Peel from Magic Hat.
Both are tasty IPA's
Will be having Woodford Reserve with a cigar later!

Mine was a Bonanza but same thing......@$0.50 under minimum wage. People could make some nasty concoctions at the salad/desert bar.

Plus my first "promotion" was to work Friday/Saturday nights without a second person. They genuinely seemed surprised when I quit!!

Not drinking (yet)... waiting at LAX for my flight home.

Coors Light at Talley's in Lewiston - waiting on my cheeseburger. (Playing Black Forest tomorrow morning before firing up the smoker - good times at the lake.)

Drove cars in and out of an oil change in Boulder between freshman and sophomore years of undergrad - didn't know how to drive stick and everyone in CO drives stick. Lasted 3/4 of a day. Made enough to to buy 2 cases of cheap beer though.

Happy weekend.

After undergrad, I worked for a University doing sleep research. People were great, work was (somewhat) interesting. What killed me were the hours. Every week we would alternate between day shifts and night shifts. If a participant cancelled, after adjusting your sleep to nights, you had to go right back on to days. After 3 years of this, my body started to shut down. It took me weeks to get over illness or injury. There was just no way I could maintain it.

For a department focused on sleep, with all awareness of what poor sleeping habits will do to you, they did not give two shits about how it was (possibly quite literally) killing us.

first job was scooping ice cream at Guernsey Farms Dairy on Novi Rd. Worst job was managing a Family Video in Clarkston. Best job was actually running a press for an automotive supplier, even on the third shift. Now I'm just finishing up my weekly paper-pushing with a Sam Adams Summer Ale. Wife is in Chicago until Monday, so it's Mr Mom for a few days...which actually may be my favorite job (at least when the kids aren't fighting)

you busted your hump for eight hours while trying not to lose a body part, but the time flew by, it was a good workout for good pay, and the old-timers treated me well. Reading through all these stories just makes me miss the manual labor of my youth, where you were just too tired at the end of the day or night to worry much about anything. but the video store had a porn section behind saloon doors, and having to call people up and asking them to return their overdue copy of "some like it hung" was, in a word, depressing.

Krogers bag boy. Fetching shopping carts in the snow and being lectured on how I should separate different items into different bags.

Roofing as a summer job. Hauling shingles up a ladder to the top of 2 story houses in 98F weather with 85% humidity from 7am to 8 pm sucks.

Also, worked at a casino. I. California . . . . not explaining it. Basically, I was the house so players and dealer were trying to cheat me. Worked full time 7p - 4a all while spending 50 or more hours a week in lab getting PhD. Slept 4 hours a night at best, often just didn't sleep for days.

All of my part-time jobs sucked, so I'll toss those.  My first "real" job sucked most - funneling people who got sentenced to community service through various municipal "volunteer" tasks.  For example, a guy gets sentenced with 40 hours of community service for DUI.  He gets connected to me at the City of [not telling], where I put him to work on the back of a truck that picks up yard debris or with a janitorial crew. Naturally, his work and attitude sucked. I was threated a few times. My co-workers hated me (either because they were staunch union or the dude just smelled bad).

I hated waking up in the morning.
