Friday Drinking Thread

Submitted by clarkiefromcanada on

Lots of reasons for potential drinking this evening:

  • Poggi anxieties?
  • Derrick Green "gonna shock the world"

This evening I am going to enjoy "the official canned beer of Duty Free stores everywhere"

One of my friends is a Bell's rep and introduced me to this a year or so ago. His honest opinion is that it's not a great beer, but one that is in such high demand due to its unique nature. It's more of a "freak show" beer -- his words, not mine. I like a small glass or so before moving on to other things, but I definitely could not drink that all night long.

Your Bell's rep is completely crazy. Hopslam is not just a great beer, I'd say it is widely respected as one of the best double IPAs out there. For those of us obsessed with IPAs, Hopslam is incredible, not just some rare beer that is released once a year.

He likes it. And a lot. But he thinks it's a very good beer -- not great. He might be speaking from personal taste more than anything else. Anyway, he introduced it to me because he knew I really, really enjoyed the hoppy beers...and it don't get much hoppier than this!

I have heard rumors of generic beer, but I didn't think they existed. It's the Big Foot of beer drinking. Have you actually had one? Please tell me they taste as bad as I imagine. I so want one.

The major area grocery chain, Kroger, many years ago, used to have its own brand designated with bright yellow packaging, and the name of the product displayed in big, black letters. So, their "beer" was literally a yellow can, with "BEER" stamped in huge letters on it. And that's it. Same with their multitude of other products.

They've since made their own brand much more appealing to the eye, but I have to admit...I kinda miss those generic yellow products. I'd scoop up that generic beer immediately if I ever saw it again.

I have family visiting from Michigan. We'll be going to an upscale restaurant in about 15 and since I just purchased a Tigers cap I'll be wearing that with jeans and my Nikes while everyone else wears dresses and suits. I march to the beat of my own drum, yo. I don't drink so I guess I'll be having water.

Harpoon IPA.    Ever since i tried to articulate why i didn't like IPA's, i realized I actually like them.  I think IPAs can taste like grapefruit.

Girlfriend is drinking Chimay, and yes she's real.

I was never big on IPAs, but when Lagunitas announced they would open a brewery in Chicago, I decided to check out their beer. Guy at Binny's recommended their IPA and I decided I like it. Since then, I've enjoyed Harpoon, Racer 5, and many others. Scored me some Hopslam last week, so tonight is a choice between Hopslam, Racer 5, or Two Hearted. Choices, choices, choices....

Also, I'd like to thank the MGoCommunity for all the beer recommendations on the blog. I've tried many beers mentioned in these drinking threads. Founders Dirty Bastard turned out to be a great recommendation. So many beers, so little time. However, I don't think I'm going out of my way to find generic beer in Wisconsin.

...and it sure seems to me that the replay value is fairly high, too. I'm already wanting to rewind and try different responses & actions already. I'm not going to spoil for anyone, but I'm just in episode 2, at the "dinner scene." Yeah...

It is the first game that I genuinely feel decisions change could make the end game totally different. I played through trying to be the "nice guy" I can easily see the game having 2 or 3 totally different paths.
