Pretty horrible faux pas, but my guess is the interns or whoever is working between Christmas and New Years aren't fully engaged

I like the Free Press a lot. I read it growing up; despite my dislike of Mitch Album and the hatchet job they did to Rich Rodriguez, I still like the coverage they give to the local sports. Helene St. James is excellent for the Wings and John Lowe did a phenomenal job for the Tigers.

Drew Sharp is very cynical and I find his negativity amusing.

Golic mentioned this the morning and was laughing about it.

Seriously... how does that make it past the fact checking stage??

I bet they just googled Harbaugh and didn't even know about John. noobs.

Oh the freep!

What an excellent paper.  All news organizations should aspire to to be just like them!

Seriously though, maybe Jim Harbaugh can buy them and turn them around too?

In case anyone cares, I talked to a former colleague of mine from a "sister" paper of the Freep. (Full disclosure: I worked at a Gannett paper for five years on the online sports desk with at least one other Michigan alum--it was NOT the Freep).

He said that Gannett, the parent company, has been centralizing page/photo/copy editing at regional "design centers" for the local papers they own (Freep, Indy Star, Louisville, Arizona Republic, etc) except for USA Today.

So it's quite possible somone not in Detroit AND not well-versed in sports (which the latter has to be the case IMHO) picked the faux photo and edited the page. It's still a massive failure and ultimately falls on the Freep editors for not getting it right, but this is another sign of the downfall of the old-school newspaper business: Local papers that aren't produced locally for the sake of corporate economic efficiency.

We could potentially spin this an egalitarian move on the part of thr Freep in that they believe that all Harbaughs are indeed created equal, or we could see it for the amateur mistake that it is and continue to avoid this publication save for some selecti innocuous stories that do appear from time to time (mainly fluff pieces). I am thinking that the latter seems like a more realistic option for the blog.
