Submitted by Robbie Moore on

In Thursday's Freep was a sidebar on the Bill Martin retirement story. It listed the highlights and lowlights of his tenure. Among the highlights:

Instituted a preferred seating program at Michigan Stadium.

Among the lowlights:

the preferred seating program was good for the University because it opened up an avenue of revenue that wasn't there before.

It was bad for the fans because you were jacking up the prices, basically holding a gun to long time season ticket holders that they had to now pay more (way more in some cases) to have the same seats.

The Freep is right to be split on this issue.

in introducing revenue ventures that many schools across the country had initiated much earlier. Revenue means development and investment in better facilities, which is what we are playing catch up on now. Sticking season ticket holders to help share the pain is never a popular move though.

I read the topic and panicked that the Freep was badmouthing the TV show "Martin." If they had said anything bad about Sheneneh or Brother Man from the fifth floor, I would have had to cancel my subscription immediately.
