Free Sam Webb Story on Each Potential Flip on Campus this Weekend

Submitted by alum96 on

Headline says the tale. LINK.

Sam seems most high on Jones (who decommited from NEB yesterday and had a great visit to Louisville last weekend) and Pickard with who it seems like UM was his dream school all along.  Interesting that both guys are listed as DEs in the story (Pickard was a TE / DE prospect like Wheatley is)

But he has a nice blurb on each guy...and the Chop House is making a ton of money this month from UM.

Pickard (TE/DE):

There are a host of other suitors as well, but according to Scout.com East Regional Manager Brian Dohn, Pickard has long had a dream of becoming a Wolverine.

Pickard has long wanted a Michigan offer, and when his recruitment began more than a year ago it was close to being a given, if the Wolverines offered, he would be go there.  If he doesn’t wind up at Michigan it will be a minor miracle.

Jones (DE):

What makes it interesting is that Jones announced his separation from the Cornhuskers just shortly after having an in-home visit with head coach Mike Riley on Thursday night. Jones hasn't officially named a leader in his recruitment, but it's hard imagine another team having the momentum that Michigan does right now. Michigan State and Louisville are also in the mix for his final official visit.

I prefer my "Oh Boy" during buckle up or big news type threads (this thread would qualify)

Just like how we have an unwritten MGoRule that Upton is reserved for hello posts. I'd like to see the Oh Boy be reserved for buckle up type posts.

90s dancing white folks soul train kid for all "super positive news about big time recruits."

Let's recap...

For example, "Rivals.com California insider reports Michigan has the inside track for Iman Marshall"

For example, "Sam Webb says Michigan's silent commit is Mike Weber and an announcement will be made this weekend."

For example, "Chris Clark picks Michigan on Signing Day."

DE is a position of need and it gives some roster flexibility.  This would allow Wheatley Jr to play TE if he wanted to (at M) and obviously Clark would keep his position.

DEs and DBs are major position needs looking ahead 2 years.  Well 1 year for DEs.

I had thought Pickard was going to be a TE recruit and backup in case Clark falls thru but it sounds like maybe a Beyer type at DE.  He is 6'6, 230ish - RS this year and get him in S&C, and we should have a 245+ish RS FR ready to backup on the DE along with Jones behind Charlton, Marshall and Poggi in 2016.

Crystall ballz went heavy to UM on the 21st.

I dont make those judgements based on STARZ

We just had a RS SO walkon beatout a 5 star JR for the DT job.  We had true FR beat out a 4 star RS SO with a year of playing experience at LT.  Our best RB last year might have been a 2 star.

Until they get here on campus and go through camps it's hard to preclude anyone.  I do think one of the DEs has a chance to get into next year's 2 deep as its basically 4 players now and thus far Poggi has been barely used and Marshall was RS'd.  If one of these guys comes in an impresses right away he could pass either or both of these guys.  Or not.

Yea, that's why I went with a Frank Clark example.  Relatively low expectations coming in but he ended up playing quite a bit and was one of our best defensive players by the end of his career.

We have high hopes for some top prospects, but realistically, this is the scenario we are looking at for the end of this class right? Stocking stuffers basically

Even though he's a Florida kid, UF, FSU, and Miami all declined to offer him. The only SEC offer is from Missouri, and Michigan is the only "blueblood" program that's offered him besides NE. I think Louisville might be a strong contender from the standpoint of geographical proximity, but the Harbaugh factor is obviously important. Does he want to play for JH or Petrino?

Don, he has offers from MSU and Missouri - 2 programs that need to find guys lower on the boards then the teams that get 4 stars a ton.

Missouri currently has 2 guys mocked in the first round of the NFL draft at Walterfootball, both happen to be their starting DEs (Markus Golden and Shane Ray)

Shane Ray is a 3 star, class of 2011,  #385 DE who is leaving a year early to be a top 10 pick.

Golden went the JUCO route and was a 3 star it apears

Missouri's FEI defense this past year per FO was #13 in the country.

You know what MSU has done on D the past 5 years.  While Pelini sure didnt show it at Neb he was supposed to be a defensive guy - and got Gregory out of JUCO.

Not saying Jones is of this ilk of player but there are certain staffs I dont mind seeing offers from for certain positions and teams like Wisconsin, MSU, Stanford, and Missouri are some for D below the FSU, Bama, USC, OSU level that I like to see offers from if we delve into the 3 star range.

These next few weeks are sure to be filled with a lot of F5's and "looking over my shoulder to make sure no one is noticing my lack of productivity"s.

Looks likely that we're gonna get several strong players who will be ready to contribute and looking at our depth chart down the line these guys will need to!

I will say that I do miss the clustered "Hello" posts in particular, and although we may never get to the reaches of February 2012 and Commit-a-palooza for some time yet, just to see a few - or even two in a single day - would be very encouraging.

Also, yeah, Jason Higdon was sounding a little terse when it came to Zach Gentry, although I assume that he's probably only answering the question for the millionth time this week. Either that, or he's expecting something to not happen regarding Gentry and Texas, if you will.
