Free Press is at it Again

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Freep.com just posted - as its lead story - the ridiculously stupid non-story about Michigan self-reporting those four stupid minor violations. One look at the page, and you get the impression that Harbaugh is running a program that makes SMU of the 1980s look like choirboys.

They're trying to make this seem like it's their scoop, but MLive beat them to this about 10 hours ago.

I'm posting the link here, but I'm seriously hoping you don't click on it, because they don't deserve the clicks:

http://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverine…

The story is bylined by Gene Myers (the Free Press sports editor) and somebody named Kevin Bull. Yes, they actually hauled the sports editor out to write this.

The story also includes this line, designed to further the impression that Harbaugh is running a rogue program:

"Before the spring football game April 4, U-M compliance officers met with reporters to discuss rules involving the media. At that meeting, the Free Press asked whether the new football staff had committed any violations. The compliance officers refused to comment."

I hate these guys.

I'm half Irish, half Dutch. My family has also been in America since before there was such a thing as The United States. So I'd like to think I know a tad bit about The Civil War, about ships, and old wooden things.

I've never heard of this "Freep." Seems gross to me. Like a disese, or some sort of fungal infection my grandfather would talk about. My uncle was the greatest "Michigan Man" (is that trademarked?) in my family. Won a national championship. Was extremely well respected in his field beyond playing football. Never said a word to his family or colleagues about this "Freep" thing.

I'm inclined to believe it was entirely made up.

Eh, you're freeping the freep.  They don't go too over the top in that article.  What are they supposed to do, not mention it?

i doubt there's any rhyme or reason as to what makes the front page lead story, besides the obvious--what people have been clicking on and website algorithms.

I'm pretty sure there's no actual human that decides this.

Even if there is a story with that headline is going to bring the clicks. Michigan fans still checkin the site and state fans will click on it to see what the violations are.

And that's why i have fully switched to my new Porta-Freep....it's a classic one holer, lined with the lies of the freep for easy disposal of my necessary wastes.  It comes in multiple colors and pics--my personal edition has Drew's photo on the bottom, but there are scads of other worthless writers, er, photos to choose from.

I really don't see the bias or the hate. Seems to report the reasons for the violations and that they're non-issues. If the article had been written by Drew Sharp, then yes, this would have been an all out assault on our savior.

Hate the Free Press, but that article was pretty much just an explanation of the violations. For once those pricks reported the actual news and didn't make it up.
