Freddy Canteen tweet

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Not just a WR, not just a CB, but is a two way player.

On Scout, he dropped completely off of Sam Webb's WR depth chart leading many to believe he'd made the change to CB full-time.

Welp-

I'm a two way player, I play Offense and Defense, too clear up the confusion..

Can't count the number of times I've seen real-word typos in an e-mail as it sails off into the ether, too late to fix, or don't notice the typo until I see it below a response.  As in the recent one when I meant to say "past" and it came out "pass."  Had to admit I had spent too* much time on a certain football site.

*And I didn't see I'd typed "to much" until this was posted!  See, Freddie?  You're not alone!  Damn these instant forms of communication!

Are the capital letter typos too? Come on man, that's not a typo, that's a mistake a grammar school kid would be held responsible for. Granted, Harbaugh's tweets are not a lot better, but expecting students of one of the nation's top public universities to be able to use the language without looking foolish is fair. I admit that it isn't a big deal but spare me the apologetics.

i want to print this fucking reply out and add it to 'carlos spicywiener's life perspective' manual, filled with both examples of people taking meaningless shit seriously, and self-reassurance that at the day's end, i'll never be such a loser.

i had a grammar typo in my text message to my friend yesterday. how do you think i should punish myself?

but It's stuff like this, Clark playing at CB, Lyons going between and SO MANY MORE THINGS that the last staff would never have even considered. Lyons isn't here without the new staff but forget that. Doesn't matter. They wouldn't have even considered so many of the moves this new staff seem to think are either blatantly necessary or worth trying. To think I just complained in another thread about constantly bringing up RR but I had to say this. How do guys getting paid millions forget about basic football ideas/concepts? Best player plays regardless of position, try guys at other spots, stop punting the way nobody punts anymore, etc. It's football, man. It's not hard.

I don't like this, I wanted Peppers to have a clear path to a Heisman.  Now with Canteen also a 2 way player that is 2 Heisman candidates and it's just going to split the Michigan vote btw these 2.  Damn these first world problems.

Canteen will be to start.  There's certainly no reason why he couldn't develop into at least a playable CB, and maybe even a good one, but he has never played the position, and until a couple weeks ago had never been coached at it, so he may have a bit of a learning curve before he can contribute in real games.  Maybe moreso even than a true freshman who played the position all through HS.  Prgamatically, I would look for him to maybe get into the end of a few games later in the season, and then go full bore starting next spring and fall.  Going forward, I expect our needs at CB to be greater than those at WR, so I wouldn't be surprised if he ultimately ends up playing mostly defense and only WR on occasional downs.

That is great news. I was worried that Canteen is dropping off and not relevant until he improves. This tells me he has potential in Harbaugh's eyes. As far as the jokes on the grammar, he is not writing a paper. May be he pressed hard on "O" and pressed SEND without reading it again. Cut him some slack. He probably has a higher GPA than a lot of us on the board.

This isn't a surprise...we really need to go back and look at Harbaugh at Stanford.

He played multiple guys (many of whom are in the NFL) at multiple positions. In particular he loves the WR/CB, DE/TE and OLB/TE combos. I'm sure he has a LB/FB in there as well.

I'll use the same anaology I used before...Harbaugh is ALWAYS looking to get the best talent on the field. So if even if Canteen isn't starting at CB (which I don't think any of us expect)...if he's better than say, Reon Dawson - he's going to play over Dawson while still playing his slot position.

I would imagine if Poggi is better than Strobel and Charlotn, he'd still be playing some DE in addition to his TE responsibilities.

We're going to have a number of guys playing more than one position. I just hope they've figured out the scenarios and we don't have a dumb penalty over jersey numbers (another reason why I don't like retiring numbers...I don't like patches either though. Build statues. Honor NAMES inside the stadium.)

for the Pats who was a very productive receiver and the Belichick used him to shadow cover the slot on the opposing team. He might give up some 5-10 yard catches because of slightly less developed technique, but if the QB under throws or makes a timing mistake a guy like Canteen will pick it and threatens a pick 6. The biggest issue with the D over the last couple of years is the lack of playmakers. A couple of guys like JMFR could cause havoc but mostly not. They played solid, fundamental D while creating so few turnovers or big plays.

Is that we had only TWO interceptions by defensive backs in all 12 games (both by Lewis).  And only 5 total.  We had as many interceptions by defensive linemen as we did by all our safeties and cornerbacks put together, which may be the first time that's happened on any college FB team in the history of the universe.  Of course, it didn't help that our own QBs were tossing INTs like rice at a wedding.   Add to that, only 5 fumble recoveries all year, and a -16 on takeaways.  If we could turn that around, even get it back to even-up, that has to be worth a game or two right there.

Haha

Anyone not affiliated with Michigan: "Wow what an idiot. Doesn't even know basic grammar."

Michigan athlete: "Shut up guys it's just a little mistake. Not a big deal."
