Fred Smith now a FB

Submitted by rbgoblue on
Well, I'm sure the Smith's are happy that Fred went to MSU. Once a 4* WR with NFL potential, Fred appears to now be a FB. *edit: printer friendly FREEP link here.

or was that just on his twitter?
LOL. May all of the Southeastern kids pan out as well. RT: @JimComparoni: Fred Smith has been moved to fullback. 1:48 PM Apr 17th via Echofon
either way this would be a good time to encourage as many of you as possible to add his twitter account on mobile alert so you don't have to refresh on loop, etc.

It's sad. Fred Smith. Was a 4 star WR in High School and was thought to be a lock to go to Michigan, since him and his family were lifelong Michigan fans. He ended up choosing MSU over Michigan much to the suprise of his family, his brother left the room in tears he was so disapointed. (He chose MSU becuase his HS coach is a MSU alum and talked bad of UM, has since talked childhood UM fans William Gholston and Larence Thomas into same situation) Since that day he has caught a total of 1 pass in 3 years at State and took part in the rather hall incident that landed him in jail for a week. He was allowed back on the team now after everything that happened to be put on the depth chart as a Full Back. It's just too bad.

..going to school for one thing, only to find out that you might be better suited for something completely different. I guess I'm glad it only happens in football sometimes.

if you are going to move him to FB? Why take the risk of a media hit reinstating ANOTHER player out of jail just to move him to fullback? Why not TE? If he is to big to be a WR then the normal progression is TE.

You know, like that bobcat who was washed out of show business and became a cop, he used to appear on the disney channel, anyway... before we do that, let's kinda remember that this doesn't just happen at State. I'm not saying 4-star WR typically move to FB, but this sort of thing isn't completely uncommon. Remember when Scout said Stevie Brown was a 4-star corner. He ended up at linebacker. Not saying it's the same thing, but it's at least comparable, though maybe not as drastic. All I'm saying is this isn't the craziest thing to ever happen, and all the ROTFLMAO!!!11!1! is a little over the top in my opinion. That is all.

when you go from 4* wide out, then to jail, then back to wideout only to be moved to fullback. And no Stevie Brown moving from Safety to LB is not the same thing. FBs rarely get drafted into the NFL and even if they do there is only 1 FB spot on the roster. With LB there is 3/4 spots per team therefore your odds of succeeding are much higher at the next level. Also seriously who gets excited about a fullback? No one. Do you get excited about: WR: Yes S: Yes LB: Yes FB: No So no it's not the same thing at all. RBs go to FB not WRs... WRs go to TE.

It's not the same thing. I understand that and even said it wasn't. I said it was comparable that Stevie Brown was to scout a CB and ended up a LB. I even said the move from WR to FB was more drastic. So before you get all gung hoe about how I don't understand that please reread my post. To further my point though, State already has a good young TE in Dion Sims. Looking at the roster, Smith is only 228 lbs. He would get killed at the TE position. He would be useless there as he wouldn't be able to block any DEs. At fullback he can be useful. He can be used out of the back field or motioned out as another WR. He can also take on LB in run situations. And do I get excited about fullbacks? Yes. Kevin Dudley was one of my favorite Michigan players in the past. I understand that FBs don't often get drafted, but is that in the cards for Fred Smith at WR or TE? No. Is it in Michigan State's best interest to get their best players out on the field to help them win? Yes.
