Frank Beckmann "Why I stepped away from Michigan football" Detnews article [Locked]

Great write up, my favorite part of the article:

My relationship with Schembechler didn’t start on as warm and fuzzy a note as that with Ufer. In 1976, my job at WJR took a twist when I was moved from my role as an investigative news reporter to the station’s sports department. The newspapers had carried a story on the switch and the first time I went to Michigan Stadium to cover one of Bo’s games, I was introduced to the coach afterward. While shaking hands with the legend, he looked me in the eye and said sternly, “Beckmann, huh? So you’re the investigative reporter. Well there’s nothing to investigate around here, you got it?”

Ed-S: Thread about Beckmann locked becauce politics. Who could have seen that coming, eh? (article is non-political, also doesn't say why he stepped away).

I never knew who to blame.  And I never claimed to know.  What I wrote at the time was that a few of the Regents who were Democrats were widely reported -- not by me -- as having complained seriously about Beckmann.  And the antipathy between Beckmann and the Democrats would have surprised absolutely no one.

I didn't advance any conspiracy theory on Beckmann's decision to step down after this year.  Somebody did; suggesting that Brady Hoke insisted on Beckmann's removal.  And I doubted that theory.

So your insulting snark is as inaccurate as it is unappreciated.

I'm very interested in finding out who replaces him.  Hopefully they go with someone who will be in the role for a long time again.

I'll definitely miss him calling games though as I get stuck at work on Saturdays occassionally.

This might sound crazy and I honestly don't even know whether he likes Michigan but I think Dan Miller would be awesome for that job. He already has the chemistry with Brandstatter and his radio voice is great for football (What is better than his signature "touchdown Detroit Lions!" I just wish we could have had the chance to hear him say "touchdown Denard Robinson!")

In before the lock.

Also, please please please get Dan Dickerson to do the games. He did a great job with the ones he did in 1997 like the Colorado game.

I'd love Dickerson to do games but the schedule conflict with the Tigers might make it impossible with prep time and all the extra work that goes into broadcasting both sports. I'm of the opinion that Matt Shepard will most likely be the first and only offer from Brandon.

When he talks about football and his love for the University of Michigan, Beckmann sounds like a great guy.  I am still of the opinion that this decision is a bit of a compromise between Beckmann and the University of Michigan, allowing him to go out on his "own terms," while allowing the University to find someone who doesn't appear to be a politically incorrect nightmare waiting to happen.

I will choose to remember the football announcer as long as he "keeps his nose clean" this season.  It would be a shame if he became a Jimmy the Greek or Al Campanis after so many great years behind the mic.
