Former Penn St AD and Sr VP Plead Guilty in Sandusky coverup

Submitted by SBayBlue on

Former Penn State AD Tim Curley and Senior VP Gary Schultz plead guilty this morning to charges of endangering the welfare of children in the Jerry Sandusky sexual molestation coverup. The misdemeanor charge carries with it the possibility of 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Seems that they may be willing to testify next week in the case of Former University President Graham Spanier.

Let's see how the members over at BWI react to this development.

Commencing meltdown in 3, 2, 1....

Man I actually thought they plead guilty to a cover up. Click baity title (by PennLive, not you OP).

Looks like they're going to do some snitching on Spanier. Good.

5 years of BS from the acolytes of "we want a trial, full transparency, we will beat these charges ....."

Then this.

I guess it gets interesting now - will they testify in Spanier's trial?  He's gotta be crapping his pants right about now.

But if Spanier pleads out too doesnt that means that none of them will have to answer even one question under oath on what people knew and when they knew it?  That's what bothers me the most on this - did people really know back in the 70's about Sandusky and covered it up for over 30 years?  Would one of the testify as to St. Joepa's level of understanding regarding his friend Jerry through the years?

Unless Spanier goes to trial nobody will ever have to answer that question and about 1,000 more just like it.

Maybe or maybe not.  It may depend on the agreement reached with the prosecutor who may be allowing them to plead to a lesser offense in exchange for their testimony and probably no prison time although I'm speculating.

Of course it's Pennsylvania. PSU, Pitt and a couple of other schools still largely avoid FOIA requests.

sure that the state of PA particularly wants a trial either.  Spanier pleading out may be the best-case scenario for them.

Things are personal between Spanier and Tom Corbett (whereas things aren't personal as regards the other 2 PSU administrators) --- I tend to think Spanier's strategy in a trial is to pin things on HIM.

Now, I do think Spanier is guilty --- but from the Commonwealth of PA's POV there's a risk in Spanier trying that strategy (because Corbett certainly could have done better himself when he was the PA Attorney General).  The Commonwealth has an interest in this themselves.

I do think someone will eventually talk --- on their deathbeds.  May take 10-15 years to get there, but that is what it is.

The State of PA would have rather had none of this sordid mess ever come to light.  It has cost a State institution a quarter of a billion in pecuniary loss to say nothing about good will to endure the legal process.  It will be a very long time before PSU can lose the association with Sandusky and the cover up.

What I am curious about it whether Spanier et al. can avoid civil suits as I don't know what the settlement agreements between  the various parties whom have settled with PSU recite.  Civil suits can be every bit as damaging and sometimes moreso as OJ Simpson found out as a defendant is required to give testimony, unlike a criminal case.

but I'm 99% sure that Spanier (nor Curley nor Schultz, nor anyone associated with the 2nd Mile) cannot be sued (civil lawsuit) by anyone who recevied a settlement from Penn State University.

The terms of the settlements were released/leaked this past summer ... and that's as I recall them.

You really think they wouldn't lie even if they did know what happened in the 70s? Did any of them even know sandusky back then?

This is about the information that was made to them in the 90s and their cover up and allowing a predator to continue using the facilities to rape kids

Anyone whos one of then lawyer types want to comment? It seems significant to me that they plead guilty here. Maybe they worked a deal here? I don't know how to take this

Likely a deal to testify against Spanier. You don't plead guilty on a misdemeanor otherwise. There's no reason to plead guilty and ruin your reputation on this otherwise. The deal was likely contingent on pleading guilty on the lessor charge in exchange for not facing the felony charges.

Quite a few of the charges against them were dropped due to the guilty pleas.  Only misdemeanor charges remain.

Here's the money quote:

Penn State's costs related to the Sandusky scandal are approaching a quarter-billion dollars.

Good.

Anyone who has been involved with me on a discussion of this issue knows that I get rankled by evidence-free suggestions that these men made a conscious, malevolent decision to perpetuate child abuse for the purpose of winning football games.

All we know is that they had information and failed to act on it. Their motives are unkonwn.

And their motives are irrelevant. They are every bit as morally and legally responsible for their neglect if they had good-faith reasons for it as if they gleefully endorsed Sandusky's action.

The buck stops with them (and with Paterno, who is dead and cannot stand trial).

they dinged me 10K points for not feeling sorry enough for the broken hip spartan at the bottom of the celebration pile a few years ago.  in my defense i was still in the second stage of grief (rage right?).

But one day my points miraclulously reappeared even though like a terminator, i feel no pity or remorse.

Things don't look good for the former gymnastics coach, but many gaps need filling in.

Dantonio's team was a mess in all ways last year, and they now have 3 guys and a coach suspended pending legal decisions.  Baylor and PSU are horseshit because really bad shit happened and they allowed it to continue to happen (and have large portions of their fan bases in complete denial or who just don't give a shit).  Sparty can handle this right or handle this wrong. They deserve that opportunity (assuming it isn't determined that they withheld information until after signing day in which case they have already handled it wrong and they should consider application to your proposed league).

I was at my kids' school for parent teacher conferences (my kids did great) and a book fair.  They had a Sports Illustrated top 10 book.   I didn't get all the way through it, but but AC, Desmond were in the top WRs and Woodson was of course the #1 DB.  No Bo in the coaches list, but JoPa was #4.   I cringed.   He truly was a great coach, but seems like he should be erased from history.  If you honor a guy like that you encourage the Baylors and Tennessees of the world.

I visited with the president of a large university - Penn State-like in terms of size and prominence of their football program.  He knew Spanior, and said that without question he would go to jail over this.  Can't wait to see it happen.

of guilt is encouraging, the penalties seem light given the damage to the victims and millions of dollars in prosecution spent. It just does not seem that there will be any adequate justice rendered on these clowns or their pathetic administration. Yeah, Paterno told a higher up, and then the issue died. How did Paterno allow Sandusky to continue on with full access to the program and its facilities? Unbelievably corrupt and morally bankrupt.

This looks like a crack in the PSU armor.  Spanier deserves to suffer mightily for his lack of character and it's good to see these two roll on him.

Joe knew.  Spanier knew.  Maybe after Spanier's hearing some of the JoePalogists (TM) will extract their heads from their asses and realize that their beloved figure is not the hero they make him out to be.

Of course, maybe not.

vertiGoBlue

But, now we do (or soon will) know "the facts" as detailed in the signed plea agreements. And we'll know "the facts" from whatever testimony these two will - presumably - soon provide in the Spanier trial.

Thus, that tired, heads-in-the-sand(usky) refrain will no longer be acceptable (not that it was truly acceptable at any time to anyone who looked at things objectively).

With regard to the "witch hunt" criticism, if it was a witch hunt, it seems they've found a few true witches in the administration at PSU, wouldn't you say?

I've always felt in this whole sordid affair that when you list off the people to blame, Curley is far and away #1, besides Sandusky himself.  Paterno, for all the things he didn't do, did do one thing: Informed Curley.  This is one more thing than Curley did.

Sounds like schiano walked away also. They all knew. The DC at ucla, schiano. All the way up the line they knew and did nothing and continued to let it happen. We all know it is a matter of time before something else happens at ped state and that should be the end of them.

knew. Initially when the scandal broke either a former player or current said there was a running joke on campus about Sandusky and the showers at the athletic facilities. Right before the wagons were circled. There's no way a creepy ass old man constantly ferrying little boys around campus didn't raise eyebrows. Even the janitors kept their mouths shut for fear of losing their jobs. Disgusting. No way paterno didn't know. I wanted these clowns to stand trial and give up joe. Hopefully the plea deal was to testify against spanier.
