Former Michigan star in automobile advertisments

I must have seen one of these and other ads featuring Jim Smith '77 (All-American '76) twenty times before I recognized him with an older, heavier face and no afro. He had a pretty good NFL career with the Steelers and Bucs. http://imsaturn.com/video/saturn-total-confidence-tv Unfortunately he will also be remembered for dropping a wide-open bomb late in the game at Purdue in 1976, which led to Michigan's first loss and drop from the #1 ranking.

Scott Dierking gashed our D over and over.

Left so many bad memories that the first time I saw "Dierking" on the back of his son Dan's Purdue jersey, I felt my stomach tighten.

It wasn't so much a gashing as a bulldozing. The cornerback (Pickens) would come up every time and turn the play inside, only to have Dierking run through the linebacker everytime (who shall remain nameless due to the statute of limitations, but he was a high school teammate of basketball guard Steve Grote).
