As many people here know, former Rutgers OC Ron Prince is now with the Detroit Lions. Rutgers just announced that former Marlyand head coach Ralph Friedgen has been hired as their new OC. At his peak, the Maryland and GT offenses were pretty impressive. He's a bit over the hill at 66, so remains to be seen what he can do with the Scarlet Knights. Good coach, though.
Former Maryland HC Ralph Friedgen hired as Rutgers OC
The Maryland-Rutgers rivalry just got real, ya'll!!!!!!
Rutgers V Maryland is ON baby.....
or the fact that you have an assault rifle pointed right at your comment... yikes!
always liked the Fridge...and he's light years different than the Schiano brow beating methodology of coaching. Could be a breath of fresh air Rutgers needs after all of their problems.
i would feel better about this news if neither rutgers or maryland was in the B1G. i can't believe i have to start learning those teams.
Down with Delany!
SEC of them.
NJ.com had an interesting tidbit regarding the journey to hiring Friedgen to troll his old team from sideline once a year as well as fix what was statistically a rather anemic offense. In the case of finding an offensive coordinator, supposedly Brian Angelichio - a former Rutgers assistant now in the NFL - was the first plan. It seems that Rutgers tried to make an effort to get former assistants to come back on the defensive side of the ball too actually and the attempt to go to the NFL first is what they cite as a primary reason the search was protracted somewhat.
In any case, they reported a two-year deal which they expect to be on par with typical Big Ten coordinator pay, but no numbers have been given yet.
This portly gentleman right?
Kinda reminds me of this guy
Meanwhile, Friedgen happens to be a pretty good football coach and a good developer of QB talent.
And he just inherited Minnesota's QB Philip Nelson, so there's that.
Anyway, continue on with the fat jokes, I guess (?).
I never bought into the jokes like that, even when Charlie Weiss was at ND. Football coaches are hired to coach football...go figure.
I wouldn't say I was poking fun at his weight as much as I was saying his general silhouette reminds me of that of the Western Kentucky Hilltopper.
Thats said, pretty solid coach.
No baby, I didn't call you fat! I just said you're generally shaped like a bowling ball.
amidst the smoldering tire fire that is Rutgers football. I thought he got a bad finish at Maryland and he had them really really good in the early-mid 2000's (IIRC he had 3 sonsecutive 10-win seasons). He seems like a very good, not quite great coach which is probably better than what Rutgers should have expected to land
Good guy, Good coach ... Rutgers athletics needs both
...I agree. Read this article about a player named Sammy Maldonado if you haven't already. It's a long article, but it sheds light on the tight ship that Friedgen ran. I never liked how Maryland treated the Fridge in the end.
Marylands former HC and HC in waiting.
Look for the jumbo package. (Couldn't help it.)
