It isn't the NHL, of course, but I believe Chris Tamer has coached youth teams for several years in the Detroit area now that he is retired from the pros. I think he might even be affiliated with the leagues that play at Compuware in Plymouth, but I am not sure exactly how active he is in that. I know I have seen his name listed as "Coach" at Compuware in the recent past.

Matt Herr was a prep school coach and now works for USA Hockey and has coached some international teams for them.
There's also a bunch coaching in the youth/AAA ranks.

I was joking with him -only a little- a couple of years ago when a coaching vacancy came up at one of the ECHL teams he used to play for, talking about how sweet it would be to see him behind the bench (in lifts, of course). He is a solidly cool dude. I'm glad he's working closer to home.

He coached a Japanese team that he had also played for and the Japanese national team at the 1980 Olympics.
EDIT: I guess that doesn't qualify as now, but I thought it was worth a mention anyway because Mel is awesome.

My childhood hockey hero... played when UM won NCAA championship in '64. I'm not sure he every had a penalty in college hockey (at least that was the rumor). Fantastic player & good coach.

like kelly mckrimmon and paul fricker? maybe even brad tippet and teddy spears. i think many of the guys are coaching at some level. steve richmond, brian lundberg, donny krussman. i've lost track of them over the years, but i bet one of the mgo-internet sleuths could figure it out.

Possibly my all time favorite Michigan athlete ever, in any sport.
He coached the Regina Pats for a while in the '90s, but I think he is in the front office now. His brother ended up doing a little better in his coaching career.
