Former M Hockey Players coaching now

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on
This was raised inside of another thread but I wanted to see if a thread of its own would catch the eye of someone in the know. Other than Red and Brian Wiseman coaching at Michigan, Bill Muckalt coaching at M Tech and john Madden coaching with the Florida Panthers, are there any other former M hockey players coaching? I know there are some former players like Jason Botterill and David Oliver working in front offices but this is a question about coaches. Anybody know anything more?

It isn't the NHL, of course, but I believe Chris Tamer has coached youth teams for several years in the Detroit area now that he is retired from the pros. I think he might even be affiliated with the leagues that play at Compuware in Plymouth, but I am not sure exactly how active he is in that. I know I have seen his name listed as "Coach" at Compuware in the recent past.

Matt Herr was a prep school coach and now works for USA Hockey and has coached some international teams for them.

There's also a bunch coaching in the youth/AAA ranks.

Is in his first or second year and Divine Child, a private school in Dearborn, MI. Saw that while reading at he HS preview edition of MI Hockey just days ago. I believe he's an alumnus there as well

He coached a Japanese team that he had also played for and the Japanese national team at the 1980 Olympics.

EDIT: I guess that doesn't qualify as now, but I thought it was worth a mention anyway because Mel is awesome.

like kelly mckrimmon and paul fricker?  maybe even brad tippet and teddy spears.  i think many of the guys are coaching at some level.   steve richmond, brian lundberg, donny krussman.  i've lost track of them over the years, but i bet one of the mgo-internet sleuths could figure it out.
