Football season preview piece over at SportsTalk313

Submitted by FabFiver5 on

SportsTalk313 just posted a season preview piece that quickly outlines each game. Not a ton of in-depth info in this one, but it predicts 9 wins minimum and says "anything over that will be a successful year." I'm inclined to agree...I think we should win more than 9 if everyone stays healthy.

Also, I had no idea Nebraska is off the schedule until at least 2017(!)

I didn't look at their schedule until looking at the piece, and STAEE doesn't play Ohio, Wiscy, or PSU.  They play MIchigan and Nebraska, ND, and a bunch of winnable games.  They could be a terrible team and still win 8 games with their schedule.

While the post was good and rather entertaining, it reinforces my notion that someone with an English degree and some sort of tech minor could have a gold mine.  All they would need to do is offer their services to blogs as a proof-reader.

He's no Brian, but he did get his points across in a way that mainstream readers can understand.  What I didn't like is his giving the Wolverines/Spartans series record since 1950, calling it "perspective."

It sounds like a Sparty fan's lament: "MIchigan went 33-6-3 in the series before 1950, but that doesn't mean anything now.  Why does everyone have to count those games?  Can't we just pretend they didn't happen?"

As if Sparty's 26-35-2 record since then is anything to brag about...

Starting with 1950 is convenient for Spartan fans, because that's when MSU began a win streak against Michigan.  MSU was quite dominant in the 1950s and 1960s, going 7-2-1 against Michigan in each of those decades. But, if we chose any decade besides 1950 or 1960, either before or after to start the calculation, it skews heavily towards Michigan.  Why not choose 1970? It's a point at which at least some people still alive remember, but that record doesn't support the intended narrative with a lopsided 31-12 advantage for Michigan.

proven leadership abilities even before he got to UM. I can't recall if it was on this site or another that I mentioned his senior year's team starting off with either two or three straight losses, forcing them to run the table to merely qualify for the playoffs. And that they did, including an away victory over an OH h.s. that hadn't lost in something close to 65 straight home games. And he did it in the last few seconds with a long t.d. pass. That is clutch and the leadership it takes to navigate a team through a mine field of that nature at such a young age clearly separates him from others of the same age group.  I've got us down for no worse than 6-1 through our first seven-Rees can spin it if given time- and then the meat of the schedule.                  ^ I believe by that time the team and its leader will be full of confidence. If it's enough to get us to 10 and a possible 11 in a bowl game is, of course, up for debate, but I have great faith in numero 12.
