Football Recruiting - Who is left on the Board?

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

So we still have four scholarships left but I feel like the likelihood of filling those spots seems to be slipping. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I can only think of four realistic-ish prospects left on the board

1) Garnett

2) Yuri Wright

3) Armani Reeves (if he visits)

4) The tight end who goes to school with Kalis.

Is there anyone else out there that I'm forgetting. Pharoah, Payton committed elsewhere. Doesn't look like we're offering that RB. Maybe that Dodson kid who is committed to Wisconsin but that seems pretty quiet right now. Same seems to be true on Jordan Diamond. Can't imagine they'll take Monty Madaris now that we already have two receiver commits. Is there anything else out there of any real possibility?

Any chance we offer a Bellomy type QB, guy who isn't highly touted but came on in his senior season for depth purposes? We still only have 3 scholarship QBs which scares me. This is assuming, of course, we don't get a "too good to pass up" type guy at another position.

That's a pretty complete list of the main targets right now. If I were to venture I guess, I'd say M ends up with Garnett (some good signs there recently), Reeves, and Grant, plus the usual signing day pull of a player who wasn't on the general radar. That's obviously just a guess, however, and not one based on a lot of insider info.

I get the feeling that people are getting too comfortable that we're leading for Garnett.  I will absolutely do backflips if he commits to us.  Adding him to the already formidable o-line class has the potential to transform our running game into a destructive, unstoppable, soul-crushing machine.

The interview that got folks all hot about Garnett indicated to me that he has a bigger man crush on Isaac s than magnusson. That seems to be important to him so I would watch out for that hiccup and not presume he is in for m. Would love it is he is though!

I don't know off the top of my head when each player committed to play in their AA game, but this often happens very far in advance (as far ahead as a year, as you can see from my interview with Taylor McNamara today). There's a lot of factors that go into choosing which game to participate in—travel, exposure, potential playing time, coaches, and so on. Hanging out with friends is great, but that's not the be-all-end-all—Terry Richardson ended up in the UA game while Royce Jenkins-Stone and James Ross played in the Army AA game.

So for Garnett, I don't know why he chose the UA game, but I'm sure there were very legitimate reasons. I wouldn't worry at all about his friendship with Magnuson, and I still think there's a very strong chance he ends up at Michigan.

I just find it almost comical how much weight people place on the shoulders of a kid who is, what, 16 years old right now? He's not even done with his junior year of high school and people expect him to come to UM and be the Patriots version of Tom Brady. Unreal.

Plenty of talented recruits just don't pan out. That's why you should seriously consider taking a QB almost every year, no matter how much hype your current committees are getting.

Why would they unless they got a guy that could switch to WR?

Devin Fuller and Robert Gregory are the only guys that really fit that mold. I don't know if any QB's (with WR potential or not) are even out there.

Gregory is no longer committed to Arkansas, so maybe we get him and Diamond and your theory comes true?

is just about right.  I think we can pull off the Wright/Reeves/Garnett trifecta and then it is just a matter of what is the best option for the last slot.

Garnett and Grant.

I think we WILL lead with Wright if we can get him on campus. Which I think we will.

That leaves one spot, I'm not sure we fill it. But if we do, I think it would be with someone currently not on our radar.

I'd like to see us offer Dennis Norfleet. With Smith, TRob, Gallon, Grady, and Odoms getting up there or moving on...the small slot/RB type players have had some production for us. Norfleet can play.

I only see Michigan getting Garnett and Grant out of the group remaining.

But that doesn't disappoint me one bit.  Those scholarships will go to good use in next year's class.

Nefarious Eduardo, Mr. Blue and the like really need to be brought back, along with the handy news summary in the table next to them. It made casually following recruting and still keeping track of who is still left easy. It also helped to keep track of recruits early while new ones of various interest were being introduced all the time. The current offer list page just isn't the same.

what is the possibility of us taking another receiver now that stonum's all but kicked off the team? paytons obviously out now, but are we in the running for anyone else?

garnett and reeves will commit... reeves is slow playing it obviously because of the coach situation.   i think grant would have done so by now.

and figure there is a chance there is another player who shows up on radar late in the game, i figure someone from out west where our staff has the most clout.

I think there is a limit of 25 per year in the b10, and we have 3 EEs which we can backdate so 28 is the max.  I'm not sure about this, but I think that is the limit, not the 85 number which Stonum does count towards.  So if the 85 number ever became the limit (possibly next year) Stonum leaving would open a spot.

Yeah but we haven't had enough attrition/non-fifth years/etc. to get to the 28 number for 2012 (we're at 26 right now) so releasing Stonum would get us closer to that. I'm not advocating one way or the other. Just stating what numbers are right now.
