I've never heard of this McDowell character. Tell me more...
Football recruiting looks to be picking up
Here's the visitors list for this coming weekend:
Sadly, I bet he feels the same way...
I've seen families go through similar situations when their kids get accepted to multiple colleged (although not because of athletics). It can be an extremely difficult for everyone involved. Hopefully everything is fine when all is said and done. In the end it really should be his own decision.
Would love to have his talent wind up in the maize and blue. But, honestly for the kid's sake, this must end with him winding up a Sparty. That's where his heart obviously is. I feel as though he'd probably be more inclined to put less effort in being somewhere he didn't want to go.
Unless he is 100% Blue. The headaches of having someone who doesn't want to be here far out weigh the benefits he would bring.
We agree on the headache side of things. I believe the coaches wouldn't take him unless he's 100% blue. It would be difficult to turn his talents down though.
from what I have read, he liked Michigan, but just liked State better and liked their coaches a bit more. How many alumni attended Michigan as their safety school or started at Michigan with the goal of transferring to Harvard or Stanford? I bet you most of those people graduated from Michigan and loved it.
I was one of those.
Michigan was the best school I could get into in my field of study. I was not from Michigan and had little knowledge of the university itself beyond the specific program i was interested in. I even used to root for Ohio State against Michigan. The first day I ever stepped foot on the Michigan campus was the day before classes started.
Ultimately, the university won me over on its own merits. I loved it by the time I graduated and I go back as often as I can. And I hate Ohio State of course. I'm confident the same thing would happen to a recruit who attends Michigan even though it may not have been their first choice.
I would agree with this 10000% if that were possible.
I find the argument that he 'wouldn't be giving it his best effort because it wasn't his first choice' ridiculous. It also ignores the fact that there are a number of guys on the team who would have gone somewhere other than Michigan if they had the choice (not likely that they would now, of course, but you can't tell me that for every single recruit that comes to Michigan, he had every option available to him.)
So, to spite himself and his parents (and Michigan football), he's not going to try so that he loses millions of dollars? And sacrifice his pride? Insane.
Don't kid yourselves, the coaches would take him no matter how "blue" he was. He's a major talent on the DLine, and we need all the help we can get there.
Not every kid that commits to a school is 100% convinced that's the school for them. A lot of them have a ton of good options and are probably only 60% or so convinced that's the school that's for them. For some, its probably even lower. But you gotta pick some place, so you go with the one you're most comfortable you're with.
Get the kid in the program, and then make him 100% blue.
"100% blue" is a concept fans care about. if he signed a LOI thats blue enough for coaches
Did someone mention me?
Charles Rogers. that didn't pan out well at all .. .
what cautionary tale? did rogers want to come to michigan, but was forced to msu ????
i don't understand the revelance... somebody please explain.
Rogers was a Prop 48 casualty and was ineligible as a freshman. Was that related to him picking MSU? I don't recall.
the reference still wouldn't make any sense. Rogers was awfully good in his two seasons playing for MSU.
Honestly, I'm more intrigued about the surprise guest recruit.
What makes you think Malik isn't the surprise recruit?
Steve Lorenz (sp?) on 247 said it was a 2015 recruit.
decides where he wants to play, he might be a 2015 recruit.
hmmmm...... great point
One good side affect of Basketball . . . is less obsession with football recruiting. It's great that we can focus on the basketball team and their prospects in the Big10 and NCAA Tournaments!
Regarding a 5 star wanting a quiet visit, that makes sense to me. All the hullabaloo and breathless coverage of their every move can be both annoying and overwhelming.
Regarding McDowell, I wish him well, and happiness, and peace with his family. Honestly, I don't care if he ends up at MSU or Michigan. (just not Ohio!!) But if he comes to Michigan (which seems very unlikely to me,) I hope he comes for the right reasons, and that everyone in the family is on-board with the decision.
I went to umhoops but IIRC didn't we start getting Basketball commits around this time? Coach B has me paying a lot more attention to basketball. MOAR RECRUITS (football and basketball)!
I didn't know that the recruits were rated with asterisks now instead of stars.
Yes. We are getting a visit from a 5 asterisk recruit. That's what's happening here.
I won't participate in any more Malik discussions!
(yeshisheartmaylieineastlansingbuthecouldmakefriends heretooandbelovingannarborinsideofaweekifhedecided tocomehere!)
"I won't participate in any more Malik discussions!"
He is still open and M is one of the schools he is looking at. Still, don't bet your farm on his commitment to M.
He is not secret visitor though.
Dr Rosen Rosen?
my friend used to live next to that dude. cool story indeed.
That dude as in Chevy Chase? Fletch? Or Dr. Rosenpenis?
Is it possible that McDowell is that 5* who wants to visit soon and keep it a secret?
It could be or it may not be.
that it could also not not be him
are you saying that he is Rosen?
Because if someone knew who it was it would no longer be a secret.
I don't think it is Rosen. He is already set to make a decision on the 20th.
He's pretty much a lock for UCLA.
Until Mora inevitably bails.
Im anxious to see who this mystery 5* recruit is. I believe the qb Sills is also coming at the end of the week. Whatever the McDowell family decides in the end, God bless them.
If a mystery 5 star wants to keep it a mystery . . . let him!
There are times when celebrities and athletes want to just enjoy life without the spotlight. It's great being able to go out without everyone coming up to you for attention and autographs and everything else under the sun.
Brian Cole seems a lot more interested in Michigan after his last visit. He's probably 50/50 M/MSU and wants to visit Michigan again soon
That would be awesome.
ship has not only sailed, but sunk on him.
Maize "N Brew said it was Hilliard.
Hilliard has been mentioned on a few sites, but Sam Webb said it was a surprise guy. Stated that it wasn't even a guarantee he comes. I don't think the surprise guest is Hilliard.
Maize 'n' Brew is wrong.
Josh says Hilliard is visiting (which, he is), not that he's the surprise visitor.
Boggles my mind why we still talk about McDowell. Clearly he loves MSU and wants to go there. Wish the kid all the best.
It's probably because his mom won't sign his NLI, and he's at least considering where else he might go if MSU doesn't happen.
Just because you think he's out of the picture doesn't make it so, random internet message board poster.
Nuh-uh. 99% of the RCMB got accepted to UofM but chose MSU instead.
I know cuz they told me on the internet.
I remember when elite talent wanted to come to Michigan. Now we are relying on their moms to keep them away from our rivals.
As I said yesterday, thank god for Coach B and the hoops program.
If McDowell has to come here by default. What would stop him from transferring out to MSU next year?
if his mom allowed it, he'd have gone.
Sam has mentioned that this visit is completely under the radar. The surprise visitor is NOT Hilliard.
Exactly what's stopping him now: his mom.
Isn't it a conference rule that you can't get a scholarship if you transfer within the conference? Also, any transfer would require sitting for a year. Also, also, he would fall in love with AA and not want to abandon his new teammates.
I thought that had been changed a few seasons ago so that you could get the grant-in-aid but at the sacrifice of a year of play. I seem to remember something from the compliance department to that effect, but I could be mistaken.
While people are mentioning McDowell, it may be of note that there is a deadline approaching for his saga per a Pete Thamel piece the other day. As I recall, he would need to submit either an NLI or a Big Ten tender by April 1st or MSU - if that's where he ultimately goes - would not be able to put him on scholarship until the beginning of the fall semester.
Losing a year of eligibility and having to pay for it on his own. That's what Boren had to do when he transferred to Ohio. It's in the Big Ten rules I believe, or at least it use to be.
It would be stupid to enroll at one school, and then transfer to another. He'd be buring two years of eligibility by doing that assuming Michigan would even grant him a direct transfer to Michigan State. Because don't forget, a lot of schools are colossal assholes about letting kids transfer to the school of their choice. So he'd likely have to go the Juco route to wind up at MSU.
Having to sit out a year for one. Hoke wouldn't have to give him a release to tranfer to MSU. Most coaches block transfers from going to their upcoming opponents. There is no coming here by default scenario. He could go to a lot of other places instead.
On maize n brew it is reported to be Justin Hillard as the 5 star recruit. Little late posting. Hopefully it is Rosen.
I am pretty confident it's not Rosen, who is set to announce on March 20th, most likely for UCLA.
It's also not Hilliard, who has openly stated that he's visiting this weekend.
Magnus, do you have an idea of who it may be? If so, can you disclose his position?
I have an idea, but not a confirmation. I think the position combined with 5-star would be a pretty big giveaway.
Is it a 2015 guy?
If it's the guy I think it is, yes.
Would like to see him back in the fold.
Harris has made no secret about his past visits (including a couple weekends ago). Making a secret visit at this point would be odd.
know who it is, but can't say. FWIW, I respect that and appreciate your discretion.
My guesses are Torrance Gibson or Johnny Frasier.....
or maybe Fitzpatrick ?
I will say that at least one of the letters in at least one of the three names you listed is also in the name of the potential surprise 5-star visitor.
Jarett Stidham! From what I heard is that he really liked Nuss! It would be great if Nuss could bring someone like Jarett in!
I didnt see anything confirm a position for the surprise 5 star 2015 guy?
So there is nothing stating what position the surprise 5* is in the OP. Of course that is unless we are to infer that because Rosen is mentioned, it's a 5* QB, which of course means...
But that inference would be a stretch.
This here message board post is not what clued me in to the fact that there's a surprise visitor.
By my count, at other positions we'd either have multiple possibilities: DE-Cornell, Beckner; CB-Sheffield, Fitzpatrick; WR-Campbell, Kirk (though neither of those makes a ton of sense); we'd have no possibilities--OL, S, TE; or the only possibility seems unlikely to be a surprise visitor at this particular point: QB-Gibson (since Michigan just started recruiting him), RB-Harris (since there's no real reason he'd need to be a suprise visitor), or LB-Holland (since there's not much smoke there except for a couple of tweets).
Unless, of course, it's someone committed elsewhere or you weren't being quite that specific when talking about it being a giveaway, in which case I have just spent several minutes constructing a bridge to nowhere, which, admittedly, I deserve for going on such a pointless quest.
If it is a QB, it would be Rosen, Town or Gibson! Fournette and Harris are the 5* backs. A lot of 5* defensive players out there!
Isn't it the linebacker?
No. Hilliard has already openly stated that he's visiting Michigan this weekend.
It's an LS/OW 5 star out of Louisiana
2015... 5*... Position would be a giveaway... Wants to keep visit under the radar...
Yeah I think I've got a pretty good guess who it might be. And if it is him, an "under the radar" visit might be the best thing for both Michigan and the recruit, given all the drama the recruitment has already generated.
His position is QB. I don't think it is Rosen, since he's staying in his home state of CA, UCLA. He said if he was going to leave CA, Michigan is the place he would go.
Unless Nuss has ties to the AL QB who transferred to USC and wants to keep a visit to Michigan under the radar.
I could see him wanting to keep it a secret if family forces are anti-Michigan.
Otherwise I'm assuming it is someone committed elsewhere or a recruit from the state of Ohio who doesn't want to take grief from the mostly insane buckeye fanbase.
would not seem to be able to keep a visit secret from his family. Secretive possible visits are usually from players committed elsewhere.
Has someone on this thread guessed it yet Magnus?
LOL. I can confirm that some of the letters typed somewhere on this page could be rearranged to spell the potential surprise visitor's name.
be a good candidate to be CEO at a soup company?
His middle name is Progresso.
Is she still eligible?
She's still eligible because she hasn't started college yet.
Sammy Watkins yet? or Alex Kozan?
Alex Kozan isn't a 5-star prospect.
Ergo, it's Sammy Watkins.
Sorry, it's been a while since I've seen his name on MGo.
It's Stephn diggs
No, Yuri Wrong.
who cares if there is a 5 star visit? I haven't seen a hello post for football in I don't know how long. . .. If we keep it up Jayru will have been freed by the time we get somebody to commit to this program again. . .
...according to Sam Webb/Scout.
Not sure who it is, but it's not McDowell...though apparently things are looking better on that end
Whoa..... Sam Webb said that, for a week now, he has felt that Michigan is in the POLE POSITION for McDowell.......thats quite the news, to me.... to say that we LEAD

then click todays Recruiting Roundup
thanks... i just listened to it.. i believe you are referring to a possible freudian slip by ray when he uses the word "is" as in mcdowell is already in bag.....
however, im not so sure thats what he meant... rather, i think ray used those words in reference to answering the question, and he isn't too eloquent.
i hope you are right, however, because he says he spoke to MM and he could have very well, slipped...
So the secret guy can be anyone in this list. I might have missed some.
5 star recruits with offers (247composite)
Of that list I'm hoping for Settle. I think we have a legit shot at him. At least I did before his recruitment went totally silent for 3 months.
Jashon Cornell? Just a hunch....
It's pretty obvious it's Damien Harris. Think about all the hoopla about nothing it would create if people knew he was visiting again.
Nobody else needs to be secretly visiting.
I don't see why he'd want to try a sneaky, secret one.
Campbell or a QB are more likely.
Then why would Harris have publicly visited last week?
You don't know what you're talking about.
He was just here.
is that we know who it is during or after the visit.
and of course that he's visiting.
Under the radar means he doesn't want the school he committed to, to find out. Captain Obvious!
Damien Harris already visited and met Nussmeier. Showing interest in Michigan is not a secret. It's not Harris.
EDIT: You originally said it was Harris, so now this post is outdated. Oh well.
No secret here!
I'll guess, why not? I'll say George Campbell...
My guess, based on no connections or even recruiting site accounts, is either Campbell (who might not want to draw the media attention) or Ricky Town (who is committed to USC but seemed to commit there in the chaotic aftermath of Kiffin coming to Alabama).
Mostly out of my ass, but why not?
And your name is Tur....... never mind.
I would love if George Campbell came back for a low key visit.
The 20 quetion guessing game is pretty entertaining...and pathetic all at the same time.
It's like buying a wedding ring after the hot girl behind the register at the 7-11 smiles at you.
If he commits, then it's time to get excited.
Dude! What 7-11's have you been shopping at?
I stop by a 7-11before work in a predominately Hispanic part of the city and there are 2 hot Latina girls that work in the mornings.
What 7-11 do you go to? I don't think I've ever seen a female working at a 7-11 that I would consider hot.
I swear a Kate Upton clone works at the one where I buy my Thunderbird. It's out on Farnarkle Ave. near East Dogsquat Rd. You can't miss it.
The hot girl at the 7-11 always flirts with me...but then as I walk out the door, I see her flirting with the other guys, too.
You can never trust the hot girl at 7-11.
Getting Malik would be huge ! Would be thrilled to get a commitment form him.
It would be nice if he still covered Michigan recruiting still. Damn the ESPN mothership!
However, the reason he has not tendered his LOI to State is the same. For most kids, according to recruiting roundup, the dislike his mother has for State has not abated in the least. Personally, although I know he would play up to his potential wherever he goes because the competiveness that makes anyone a 5* goes, w/o saying, is among the criteria to become such an elite player, I would rather allow the kid to go where he wants. But as you said, it's not over, but in the end I cannot imagine her wises will override her son's.
a quality education but also it's about turning him into the best player he can be and get him to the NFL.
He would be passing up a lot of money if he tanked because he had to go to maybe his second favorite college. I'd say not trying hard is highly unlikely.
Would love it if Campbell was the visiting 5 start or one of these 5 star QB studs we have offered. Recruiting momentum don't fail me now!
Didn't he burn all his eligibility going back and forth betwee o-line and d-line...maybe he could claim a medical redshirt for RR's brainfart experiment on o-line and come back for one year at H-Back for the Nuss...
Based on following the tracks and clues Magnus' laid out, the name of the recruit is clearly Heffalump
Not sure if anyone else posted it but Sam said David Sills is visiting.
Yep. It's been noted.
sounds like the surprise visitor may be coming today
