Football Play By Play Job?
In the event of an open position for the "Play by Play" portion of the Michigan Football Radio Broadcast, who do you think would fill it? Who would you like to see? I'm not a huge Matt Shepard fan but I would think the job is his considering he does play by play for basketball, high school football/ basketball, Eastern Michigan Football and Detroit Lions preseason games.
I vote for the guy from first row sports who covered the Michigan Purdue game last year. He should be cheap, too, because he doesn't even have to be at the game. He can do play-by-play and color commentary both, just by watching a video feed.
"you know. Derrick Greene. He's crazy good. Fantastic. There he goes. Ovah people. Around people. I carried this chunk of iron in my ass. Touch. Down. "

A man can dream.
to cover soccer. Its painful to listen to and a waste of his talents.
As of now, there aren't good alternatives to getting good commentary during games, and the live blog can be a bit overwhelming to follow alongside the tv, and there aren't many decent comments on there anyway.
I am going to stick with my thoughts in an earlier thread: give Dhani Jones a shot. It would keep recruiters from using Beckmann's comments for negative recruiting. Since Sparty always prospers when they have an opportunity to use "negative recruiting" and regresses to the mean when they can't, this would solve two problems with one hire.
Dhani Jones isn't a typical "play by play man," but he is an entertainer who obviously knows a bit about the game. He would be worth a shot.
Then, it'll be a party
Who said we needed a new hockey voice?
Viva Al Randall.
He craps his pants one minute on an easy shot and then is talking about something random the next and then, "HE SCOOOOOORES!!!!"
You have to then quickly remember if we are on the road or at home and judge by crowd reaction of who scored...boooo!
half the time he's calling out the wrong player names. His voice and the energy he brings to big plays are second to none, but he is not a great announcer if you actually want to know what is going on. Makes him a good compliment for TV, where your eyes can fill in the blanks for what Gary is leaving out/screwing up.
Living in NY I watched last nights Tigers game on MLB Extra Innings, and Thorne was great. Really makes you realize how bad Mario and Rod are back in Detroit.
Players aren't moving around much, so player recognition skills aren't really necessary in baseball. He still has one of the best voices in the business. He's doing the Tigers-O's game on MLB Network today.
His goal calls in hockey were always awesome.
I'll take Shep anyday over Will Teamen. Be happy you don't have to listen to "Heeeee goooooot itttt!".
Everytime I hear Tiemann I get the feeling he's trying to sell me a 1994 Buick with low, low miles.
the answer is always gus johnson.
turnovers would'nt seem so bad
you can't see her on the radio.
And have you heard her talk? Sweet jesus, she is lucky she looks good because she doesn't have much else.

The only thing else I would need is on demand replays.
espnu could air the same game as espn, just without commentators.
That's an interesting idea but I would be surprised if the powers that be at the networks would be amenable to showing one game on two network stations. Might cut in to their advertising revenue, but then again, an announcer-less game of say Bama vs. LSU would probably pull better ad sales than a Troy vs. Florida International matchup. If they were to do such a thing, it would seem like an internet feed without the play by play would be the likely medium.
on two channels about ten years. I think it was espn and on espnnews they had different camera angles and tons of stats.
"Here's the snap...Braxton Miller walks into the end zone untouched. COME ON!"
Rather not speculate on someone who has held their position since it was passed to him in 1981.
Michigan has only had 3 play-by-play guys in its history. Doc Holland, Bob Ufer and Frank Beckmann. Dan Dickerson did a few games here and there in the 90s like 97 colorado but nothing full-time.
I don't see former players doing a good PBP job for some reason. I can't imagine Brandstatter doing it. He's a great color guy, but it just wouldn't feel right.
The real question here is will Frank Beckmann be in the Michigan Stadium Media Hall of Fame despite what happened. The HOF is in the prssbox.
He will and should be in the Hall despite what happened.
Brandstatter did PBP for a few games in (I think?) 2003 when Beckmann had some kind of health issue. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't ideal. He called that insane Jason Avant touchdown catch against Northwestern, and it just didn't sound right.
Actually, there have been more than three. It's only been in the modern era that the university has sanctioned an exclusive radio contract. WUOM Tom Hemmingway doing play-by-play for years. Even the great Bill Fleming did some games on WUOM and WWJ.
Tom Hemingway did Michigan games on WUOM for at least 25 years. I remember Tom Slade was his color guy for a least part of that time.
Dunno what he is doing now, but honestly, if the position came open, he'd be a solid choice, though he might be too laid-back for people today.
This guy...
