Follow up to the Dantonio Incident Today

Submitted by Mr. Rager on

Some dude just posted on the Rivals message board about the coaching clinic today aka the Mark Dantonio incident.  I am not sure what the rules are about posting a direct quote from a premium message board about a coaching clinic are, but here goes the best part:

"Wanna know why MD was so upset? He was upset before it ever started, because for the SECOND year in a row, the moment you walk in the building there is a huge table spread out with all of UM's camp and clinic info, brochours, practice visit info, etc. A grand spread. And for the SECOND year in a row, MSU's table is small and stuck off to the side in a corner. Buddy said the entire MSU staff was PISSSSSSED the moment they arrived yesterday, and they bolted out of there as soon as they were done today. The UM staff, meanwhile, is still there mingling with the HS coaches and putting on a very nice representation of the U of M. In fact my buddy got to sit with Funk all alone and shoot the shit about OL coaching for a half hour last night."

There is a lot more to it, but he basically confirms all the rumors are true, and Dantonio lost a lot of credibility with Michigan HS coaches.

Get it right: they're a global recruiting power. It sounds more grandiose.  And when the son of a former astronaut goes to State, you can sure as heck bet that Dantonio will be billing MSU as a Galactic recruiting power.

EDIT: not sure why someone as smart as an astronaut would have a son who couldn't get into the U of M, but that part is irrelevant for the time being.

This is getting Blown WAY out of proportion...Basically, There was a recruiting seminar, With MSU, U M, And several other smaller Schools, (Mac Schools, Miaa and NAIA Schools). Hoke was not there (We were told he was accepting a "Coach of the year" award) So they had A Recruiting coordinator talk in Hoke spot. Dantonio was first to speak, was very general...Spoke very little, and I must say The MSU guys have been nothing by 1st class at all the MHSFCA clinics I have been to (8th straight year) The U M guy goes next...Starts giving essentially the same speach Hoke gave in his Interview when he got hired (Only this guy was acting like he Was Hoke), he was going on and on, repeating the same stuff over and over (Let me remind you all this was a "Rectuiting round table" with several other coaches).

Finally after what seemed like forever of this guy talking, Dantonio Says, "Hey maybe you should give the other their time to talk" The Michigan Coach is visibly offended...And says something back like "Hey Ill talk as long as I want to"...Dantonio then goes.."lets do it this way...(And says to the crowd) How many coaches here have kids who are Big Ten quality kids??? (Two coaches raise thier hands out of a room full of coaches), to which Dantonio says, "Then we should let the other guys have a chance to talk with these coaches"

Im not kiddin it really wasnt that big of a deal,  I recieved texts all day asking about the incident and I really didnt see all that wrong with it...Anyone who has ever been to a coaches clinic knows these kind of confrotations are normal...Had it not been a UM-MSU thing nothing would have been made of it...

different about your post here that changes anything?  I would expect the recruiting coach to "follow the company line".  So he did and was making sure everyone in the room knew that.  We have to remember that this is a recruiting coordinator; not Head Coach, not Offensive Coordinator, not Defensive Coordinator.  This is a younger guy that is, possibly somewhat inexperienced at this.

Ok no problem.  So the guy was talking and maybe his pride for the school got in the way.  I did not see where he slammed sparty.  I did not read where he called out Marky.

So Marky thinks he is the MC and pipes up about a show of hands?  For what?  To prove to him that "You are out of line sir.  This is NOT about the Big Ten"?

Who died and made marky king?  Obviously the true MC did not have a problem with it because he would have been cut off.    So why did marky feel the need to shut him up?  Why did marky care?  Was marky getting upset?  Could you determine that form your vantage point?  Probably not.

marky could have said "excuse me, may I interupt for a second.  Do I have the correct information?  What is the protocal here?"  I would NOT had a problem if marky took this approach.  Its all about class and how you handle yourself in various situations.

marky?  Class:  look it up.  You might learn something.

bitches. Can't wait for this to pay big dividends with the HS coaches shunting their best to Michigan. Can't say it enough - Dantonio is SUCH a dick!

Thanks for sharing. Even in victory, these guys continue to be sore losers with the most massive inferiority complex in all of sports.

The inferiority complex of the MSU AD from the top down never ceases to amaze me.  Even Hollis, who some claim is a great AD and PR guru, makes asinine little-brotherish tweets/comments about us after the Big Chill, us sweeping them in basketball last year, MSU's new scoreboards, etc.  And Izzo, who I actually respected until recently, seems to be very Dantonioesque now that he's not dominating our rivalry.  I'd be so embarrassed if I were an MSU alum, but I'm sure they find a way to turn it around in their own minds and eat it up.

You fine assholes in every walk of life, but man there are a disproportionate amount within that athletic department and especially within the football program.  I don't know if it is a prerequisite for getting hired or if it just spreads from the top of the pyramid like an infection.

It's really amazing how childish Hollis is when it comes to things like social media.  It all totally plays to his base, i.e., mouthbreathing Sparty fans who have a chip on their shoulder about "SCum/Meatchicken/the Big Hole/pick 'yer meme)."  And most of those people are Michigan State fans every except the Saturday of the CMU/WMU game, when they actually get to cheer for their alma mater.

Hollis can get away with that crap because it's Michigan State.  Any real athletics program with the expectation of winning, class, grace, and intellect would jettison that act in about five minutes.

nothing wrong with his post.  It is true.

Hollis is classless just like Izzo and Dantonio.  Hollis plays to the fanbase instead of being a leader.  Do you ever see BH, GM, AB or DB EVER tweet anything classless; especially about sparty?  No...   Why?  We have leaders that lead.

I am not so naive to believe that these guys dont discuss sparty on-line or in a private setting.  They all have there own personal opinions and they have the right to own those opinions; however, they do not share these opinions with the world.

It all about class and style.  Its about being the Leaders and Best.  Its about being Michigan Men.

Izzo took about 4 digs on his radio show at UofM.  He listed off 6 schools that could win the BigTen title and no UofM, he said UofM has had an easier schedule, that teams like UofM which have had more home games to start will fade down the stretch etc....more whining about the refs.  This kind of behavior is becoming par for the course.

I'm sure it's the schools and coaches.  The event people probably just give them whatever they ask for.  That's how these things usually work.  The college coaches are the guests of honor so I'm sure they just say hey we've got a lot of stuff and they're given an extra table.

And just whose fault is it that Michigan State does not have all their shit out and in order? If they want to be pissed, they can start by looking in the mirror.

I wonder why our table was so much larger. Just because we actually put time and effort into it? Or are teams given tables/table locations and msu got the short end of the stick?

Putting my Maize and Blue glasses aside, if you're going to organize something like this, you want to be fair to the all the schools that are coming to the clinic. Unless Michigan broke the rules to get such a good display, it should be the organizers of the clinic Dantonio should be mad at, not a UM assistant coach.

Dantonio/Cousins are mad at, not the University of Michigan.  Much like playing/winning the game(s) scheduled, Michigan organizes the display as scheduled/provided.

As for MSU?  Feelings of inferiorty have been known to previously get in the way of logic.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.  I doubt UM took over the room or anything; they just put up the tables and greeted coaches.  It MSU didn't do a better job AND the facility did not otherwise "screw" them by giving them a bad place or not enough table area, they have no one to blame but themselves.

At an event like this, for a school as big as MSU, there should be no such thing as a bad place in the room.  The bid dogs in the room are Michigan and Michigan State, and everyone is going to want to come talk to them.  If they know they're there, they could be in the back hallway and everyone would still come back there.  It's not like they're trying to spread the word about their existence.

Does  this mean that they'll have a harder time getting 4-stars in the I-96 corridor? Livingston and Oakland county are a vital part of the national recruiting effort.

on Monday. He's as connected to the general recruiting scene in the state as anyone else is, plus he knows more than a few coaches across the state because he spends so much time on recruiting. Knowing Sam, there is no doubt that his cell phones were absolutely blowing up in the aftermath of the incident.

The Spartoons can delude themselves from now until doomsday, but this was an absolutely epic public relations FAIL on Dantonio's part.

I hope Hoke fired one of his assistant coaches recently.  We don't want to have any violations on our hands for having too many coaches now that Dantonio is recruiting so well for us.
