FL S Jonathan Dowling Rips Heater, Off to W. Kentucky

Submitted by DGDestroys on

A while back, an ESPN got us all excited at the prospect of having a former 5* safety in the fold. Well, you can all kiss that goodbye, it now appears as though former Florida DB Jonathan Dowling is headed off to W. Kentucky. For those of you wondering how much his dismissal from the Florida program affected him/reason why he left...

“I don’t do everything right,” Dowling said. “I’m not an angel, but I feel like they could’ve done a lot more things to help me instead of trying to break me down. With (Heater), it was never, ‘Good play; you did good,’ it was always, ‘Why the ‘F’ did you do this or why did you do that?’ There were never positive things coming from him. For the first time in my life, that affected me and made me not like football. I had to get away from that.”

Take whoever's side you'd like, this kid is officially off the board. Good luck with the .....Hilltoppers, kid.

Is it just me, or have expectations of football coach's behavior changed over the years?  I am 34 and only have my H.S. football experience and the stories I have heard from other people, but I always thought of football coaches as miserable pricks.  It was sort of expected.  My coach was always yelling and grabbing guys by their facemasks.  Now, if they don't bring these kids a cup of cocoa after practice they start harping about they are being mistreated.  I am not for hitting kids or locking them in closets A la Leach, but if you can't take a coach yelling at you for screwing up, maybe you shouldn't be playing college football.

Wow that guy is absolutely going to dominate at Western Kentucky, playing in the Sun Belt. He'll be the best defensive prospects to come out of the Belt since DeMarcus Ware in 3 years.

Granted, I don't know anything about the situation, but what else is the internet for if not baseless speculation.  To me this kid screams 5* recruit that everyone sucked up to for four years in his high school.  Florida coaching staff probably treated him like a king to get him there.  He shows up and realizes nothing is going to be handed to him and its automatically the coaches fault.  Can't say I haven't seen it before.

Yeah, I'll side with Heater on this one. If Dowling left for USC or Oklahoma or something, I'd think maybe he was run off. But when a 5 Star ends up at Western Kentucky, that screams off-field or character issues.

Florida likely granted his release only if he transferred out of the SEC - my guess is he would be transferring out to sit out a year and then transferring back in (should he want to).

Newton's junior college (Blinn) didn't count for that because it was a junior college.

Western Kentucky, bad as they are is a  FBS school. I'm no expert, but I think that means Dowling is either stuck there or has to sit out an additional year, if he transfers again.

Once Dowling enrolls at Western.

Edit: OK, grammer Nazis "bad as they are is". Can that possibly be right?

That's basically correct.  It's also why any JUCO transfer in can play immediately.

If Dowling really wanted to play in the SEC again, he would have gone to a JUCO and lost only next year.  He could have been re-recruited back into the fold as a JUCO Jr.

Stevie Threet is the example of transferring between different D-1 schools and it just not working out well.  Committed to Georgia Tech for 2006, transferred to Michigan in 07, played 08, transferred to ASU in 09, played in 10.  He lost 2 years because he transferred.

There were rumors and speculation that one of the contributing reasons for the depature of Vlad Emilien was that he hated Tony Gibson, and his coaching style that was overwhelmingly negative in style. There were some MGoBloggers who concluded that Gibson was at least partially responsible for the non-injury attrition in our secondary.

  • Kicked off the Florida team?  Check.
  • Crybaby issues (aka "the Boren")?  Check.
  • Joining the national powerhouse that is Western Kentucky? Check.
  • Making all of these points after he decided not to come to Michigan?  Check.

I don't know guys - something is wrong with this kid.  The above just does not add up.  Probably personality / team / grade issues (why else would he go to WKu?) all wrapped into one.
