"He makes it really easy on you as a coach because he has tremendous football instincts," Michigan tight ends coach Jay Harbaugh said. "Things come really naturally to him. He doesn't have to see things too many times. He has a good sense for how things should look and feel, and he's a tough, physical guy."
Per Fiutak (I know) Kelly to ND is official
Well, if it's finally official after all the rampant speculation and supposed decisions, congrats ND. Great coach. Michigan-ND rivalry just got alot more fun.
It was fun when Weis was on the other sideline. Weis was a classic villain - the Jabba the Hutt of college football. Kelly is just a regular football coach.
Becoming a villain in his own right quietly, Kelly is. Following the path to the darkside, he is.
he's just rehashing the tribune story
This is the winner of least suprising news of the day award.
Bob Stoops still hasn't said "no" to Notre Dame.
Is it just me who thinks that Weis and Kelly are pretty much the same coach? They both have explosive passing offenses with a defenses that gives up a shitload of points. I'm not too worried about playing against Kelly the next couple of years.
1. Kelly has a proven track record at the college level, winning DII and D1 both. His offenses put up phenomenal numbers even with middling talent.
I am about to graduate from UC and while I'll always consider M to be my Alma Mater, I'd like to see UC continue to do well and that includes having Kelly as coach here.
He didn't have middling talent at Grand Valley State.
He did. Those teams were terrible, and then he was there and all of a sudden they were great. That program will be a DII powerhouse for a long time, and that is solely because of him. He is a program builder, and even when he leaves, he sets programs up for success.
Actually, you can't give him sole credit. His GVSU teams were good but not great until he found a great DC in Chuck Martin. At that point, GVSU took off and became a juggernaut, which it has remained under Martin's watch.
Of course, that he's continuted to win without Martin around is a great credit to him.
Those phenomenal numbers were put up against middling talent, so the fact that he was working with middling talent kind of cancels out
Surprise: Fiutak has a remarkably stupid opinion. They could totally lure Urban Meyer away from Florida. If they had just mindlessly gone after him, Kelly would have gotten an extension and then they could hire the defensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State!
... with what 20 banner ads on that page. Jesus, it was like a NASCAR car.
It's not Bob Stoops after all, Urban Meyer was never in play, Jim Harbaugh was just a rumor, and Kirk Ferentz was never really a part of the discussion.
Notre Dame aimed too low.
The problem isn't that the Irish are going with Kelly, who might turn out to be the next Urban Meyer, it's that it didn't appear that AD Jack Swarbrick and the powers-that-be made an honest run at the real Urban Meyer.
Wow this guy is an idiot, I was literally at a loss for words while reading this, not that the news isn't true but his slant is mind numbing
Ah, nothing like cfn to lower the lowest common denominator.
Has UC made any effort whatsoever on a contract extension for Kelly? Usually when a highly sought-after coach is being considered for a major coaching gig, the big bucks start pouring out to get him to stay put. Maybe UC can't afford this tactic? And I wonder just how much ND is gonna shell out this time. Charlie's ouster can't have been cheap...
He has a contract extension already negotiated and awaiting his signature
Kelly is in NYC for a Hall of Fame dinner according to his Twitter account. Hasn't even interviewed. I hate these rumors. Valenti and Foster used the Irishcentral.com article that said an interview wasn't necessary and that the deal was done last Friday.
his account was hacked. He has been contacted by ND people.
They're incorrect, the person who started that rumor later went back and said he was wrong.
Also that part of nbcsports is nothing more than bleacher report, they got suckered by the Biellien(sp?) report as well, and it was even after the truth came out about it.
"According to published reports" covers a multitude of sins. And note that there was no link to these "published reports".
I'm not saying that this is BS...but it isn't exactly substantiated either.
I think we'll have some great shoot outs
why hasnt notre dame gone after skip holtz? i think he would be that perfect fit for them. being the son of "legendary lou" is just icing on the cake
that Bob Stoops was going to be the next coach ;)
I think this is the original article from which that hack wrote his, http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2009/12/after-meeting-last-week-bri...
It is a bit more detail oriented
i would take a good look at michigan and see whats going on with an offensive "genius" from the big east before i hired kelly.
consider me one not worried about kelly.
Why is Irish getting negged here? He's just adding some useful information.
Irish is just doing the same thing we all do when inaccurate shit about RR turns up on the internet. He is pissed, and from his perspective, rightfully so. We will see if he is right later.
I pos'd him, FWIW.
More debate about whether Kelly is going to ND, and the extent of difference between Weis and Kelly - interesting stuff!!!
No matter when it becomes official I am excited that Notre Dame is hiring Kelly. Does it mean some losses for Mcihigan down the road? Almost certainly. But it will probably lead to a wildly more exciting rivalry as both Michigan and Notre Dame climb out of the cellar behind some explosive offenses. The Michigan-ND game could become a true September classic. I, for one, am looking forward to it.
kelly has signed on to be offensive coordinator. stoops is in negotiations for DC ad belichick is currently signing on the dotted line to become HC. man, ND is going to be awesome.
Even if that were to occur, it would probably be a nightmare. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians.
