52 yards on 10 carries is pretty good. I don't think this is a big deal.
Fitz's mouth picking up where Hart's left off...except without the wins
I don't think it's a big deal either, but it's still pretty dumb. Aside from the "oh no, don't give them bulletin board material..." argument, it's just sort of classless, especially when you've lost 4 of the last 5.
But we beat them the last 6 out of 10.
7 of the last 11
68 of the last 105 (all-time record 68-32-5)
I think you need to read his quotes before jumping on him. To me, and to be fair I was just reading the snippet quotes, he is just saying that Hart called them little brother and they took offense to it. I am not sure if that is groundbreaking or bulletin board material.
Well, as long as BTN or ESPN doesn't air this, we should be fine. Sparty can't read.
juke air behind the line of scrimmage. I would love for him to go off but I imagine Devin leads us in rushing in this one if he doesn't get hurt from a dirty hit.
Hopefully things change and he can start doing some juking a few yards past the line of scrimmage.
Talk is cheap. Let your performance and the scoreboard do the talking.
It's dumb to do it when you haven't kicked their asses like Hart did.
All the talk needs to stop. Just get back to playing dominant football again, and shut up! I think this team has let the whole "This is Michigan" thing go to their heads! PROVE you're Michigan! CMON! GO BLUE!
You're correct. This week has been dragging and I am dying for 3:30 on Saturday to be here already. M needs to kick MSU in their mouths (not literally) to shut them the hell up. I'm sick of their asshole fans thinking their program is elite, or at least being on the doorstep of elite. If we beat them again this year, they will go back to saying "I can't wait for basketball to start."
advantage this week. We are the so-called underdogs. love it. With a week off in advance, I see a complete game brewing on both sides of the ball.
is sky-painting "Go Blue" over their stadium, it's not surprising that the players are picking up the same style.
You're the mouthbreather who takes two datapoints out of 10,000 to extrapolate a simplified conclusion to make the world work in your simple brain.
Wow. Well put. You are describing my ex-girlfiend to a T (minus the mouthbreathing part). I'll have to borrow your phrasing if you dont mind.
not to defend a guy, but aren't you taking one data point (the post above, admittedly not too well thought out) and drawing a conclusion from it?
Exactly what i was thinking.
Some of us have nasal passage issues.
I know you're excited for Staee, but maybe take it down a notch?
He didn't call MSU little brother. He recounted Hart's comment as a way of explaining why MSU hates UM.
comprehension skills because he clearly calls them little brother. He also says "when we take care if business" . That is a clear cut prediction of victory.
"We labeled them as a little brother," Toussaint said. "And, you know, little brother always wants to prove themselves and try to beat up the big brother one day.
"I think they really take offense to that."
Thant is not dissing them that is talking about what Mike Hart said and how he feels MSU feels about it.
What is he supposed to say he is supposed to be confident about handling business. You would have been pissed if he sounded unsure about winning.
"Little brother". It was a stupid statement. All he had to say was that they were going into compete. Confident people don't have to express their confidence verbally.
I hate that confident people crap statement not everybody operates the same way and if he wanted to express his confidence then he can you realize that there is not one way to express confidence.
I really feel that you and some others are starting to get passive and let MSU get in your brains becaue if you look back before the 4 year run they had how verbally confident were those Michigan teams vs MSU, very. Sometimes being verbal is a way to put confidence in younger teamates that have not been in the battle and let them know that we are confident that they are not the ones that run this series, WE do.
but Dantonio talks more shit than any coach I have ever seen. It is now seen as OK and "tough" when State talks shit(which they do an awful lot of) but "petty" or "scared" when Michigan does. Michigan cannot win the media battle. Even the so called balanced reporting around here twists everything that is said by anybody as Michigan somehow "whining" or some other derogatory conception of it. I am glad Fitz is talking and I am fine with what he said. Michigan quotes are being taken out of context and twisted around anyway, so Fitz just called them some bitches and gave everybody what they wanted without any context needed. Now run all over their asses Fitz.
WE as in the university of Michigan. Hart spoke on behalf of himself and the entire program at that moment. It's always bigger than just the player.
Quattro dude, are you on drugs perhaps? He was explaining why MSU takes things so personal, and one of those reasons being that we called them little brother in the past, and what that implies. He is stating a fact to explain a current situation.
It's reading comprehension like yours that contributes to why politicians prefer to just lie than bank on telling the hard truth.
That's not too bad but the way quotes are pulled these days definitely leaves it open to be message board material.
Would you rather he said, "Yeah, we're probably going to lose" ?
Don't just read the headline (with the quote out of context). He's recounting Hart's comment and how much that fired up the Sparties. Fitz is just saying how badly he wants to win this game.
"We labeled them as a little brother," Toussaint said. "And, you know, little brother always wants to prove themselves and try to beat up the big brother one day."
You really don't see this as picking up where Hart left off?
Ya he clearly calls them little brother. It's one thing to not care that he did say it or think it's good but he clearly did say it.
You did your best "spin" on that because you clearly left off this part which he says right after
"I think they really take offense to that."
Where he is you know saying the little brother things makes them mad he was not just openly calling them little brother.
does not mean mike hart and ditz Toussaint.
WE means the University of Michigan football players.
ass whipping. Between this and the smack -talk-in-the-sky UM is doing their best to fire up MSU.
Agreed. Can't believe he would run his mouth. I am not going to waste my time watching this Michigan team crap the bed on the road yet again.
You probably will watch.
How else will he come on here to complain we crapped the bed?
Always attend home games. I only missed two home games the whole time RR was coach. However you can't deny that this is a different team on the road. I assure you I am not going to watch.
You're going to watch.
"I am not going to waste my time watching this Michigan team crap the bed on the road yet again."
You're the worst kind of fan.
Season tickets since 1995. Never miss a home game.
If you never miss a home game, then why are you going to miss watching an away game?
Maybe you should start and give your tickets to someone else.
I'm pretty sure State doesn't need bulletin board material to hate Michigan. They tend to get sufficiently worked up all by themselves.
out so well for UM before. Remember Walter Smith?
Do you really think that MSU is not already fired up for this game? I doubt the statements will make much difference. I do, however, wish these public statements were not made. I don't see them as serving any useful purpose and they make the team appear less dignified.
and I'm glad Fitz is engaging in this game and showing a deep desire to beat up sparty....Had Fitz been given the opporutnity to run behind the same o-line Hart did, Fitz would have huge numbers as well....BEAT STAEE!!!!!
The Freep article gives better context.
Shutup and play football. This is dumb. Probably taken out of context but no one will really read what he said and put it into context.
Hart's comments were taken out of context b/c he was making an analogy about a little brother wanting to win and toying with him before beating him. Glad Sparty was able to read into it enough to realize that they were the little brother is this concept of analogies, but then they continue to perpetuate it with their actions.
Downvoted for falsely inflamatory title that speaks more about your reading comprehension skills than what Fitz said.
Title should read: Fitz misquoted by MLive to garner more clicks
Even though it doesn't appear that Fitz was actually calling MSU "little brother" himself, I really wouldn't have a problem with it if he was.
Sweet I wish more guys would talk smack and get up for this game.
People have been saying it so long, even our players are starting to believe it. "We" didn't label them little brother. Hart was referring to a quote from a Spartan from a week or two prior. That's why he said "That's what they think, so that's what I think."
That Meme has been beaten to death. The fact that anybody on our side would bring it up again is stupid. The fact that anybody on their side would get their panties in a bunch over it is equally stupid.
Can't we just move on to new ways to be embarassed? Like sky writing "Go Blue" over their stadium?
A) Not a meme.
B) It stuck because it's true. No fan base in its entirety embodies their stereotypes like State.
This is another non story manufactured by old media to meet a deadline. Fitz recalls a Mike Hart quote, mentions that it probably annoyed State (if that's not an understatement...), and says that Michigan needs to take care of business by winning on the road.
That's not inflammatory. That's by-the-numbers generic player speak.
How many wins did Hart have against OSU?
So many trolls, this is about U of M vs MSU, so why bring up OSU.
Dude, while I don't think they should be trash talking right now it really doesn't matter. Cut the bulletin board material bs. "Oh they're just going to fire Sparty up" shut up. They're coached by Mark Dantonio and get no respect outside of their own town most of the time, they're already going to be fired up. No one's comments are going to make them run faster, hit harder or play smarter. You don't take on superhuman abilities just because someone trash talks you. It actually might make you more emotional which may take away from your execution, if anything. Besides that it doesn't change anything but the pre-game conversations. We're going to get their best shot regardless. Pull your skirts down.
Exactly. All someone would need to do is look back at 2011 and the schadenfreude of being odd man out in the BCS games to know that they will forever have that little brother mentality when it comes to football and now hopefully basketball.
I know we shouldn't openly call them little brother but they just scream it!
I'm not saying we should do it in a "petty" or "snobby" way.
But I have no issues with the occasional reference like what Fitz said. Now if you replace MSU with "little brother" then that's too much IMO, but sometimes you have to call a spade a spade.
That's what they are.
Fact, if Michigan goes on to win the next 5 games between these 2 teams after Hart says "little brother" then no Michigan fan would care about this.
It's just because we started losing, even though it had NOTHING to do with the comments.
It's such a shortsided thought process. You all act like we ONLY lost to MSU during those years. Like this fired up MSU, but we were beating the snot out of everyone else.
No, we sucked (in comparison to our standards) and we lost to everyone...not just MSU.
care. I am one, and there are many others, who think you should let your play do the talking and avoid trash talk as a matter of class. There is a reason these comments end up being repeated to players by coaches and amongst themselves; they are a motivating variable.
Run defense is the one thing that this spartan team does very, very well. I think Michigan has a good chance to win, but I doubt we do it on the ground. Maybe this comment will be good for a couple of yards of separation on a play action pass?
These are such nothing comments and every michigan board is all "OMGZ FITZ OH NOOOOOOOOOOS PLEASE NO".
Everyone chill out...you aren't playing in the game...nothing to be afraid of. Fitz is confident...good. The level of fear and paranoia throughout the interwebz from the UM fanbase is having me believe msu players are personally going to be showing up at various fans residence to personally kick asses.
let's all calm down.
WolverineJet....I"m with you all the way! We are getting passive the point (and I don't mean this right at mgoblog posters only) that it's almost a genuine, palpable, and physical fear from the fanbase towards msu. I don't get it...
Exactly the fear and passive stuff is playing right into the the idea that Sparty thinks that they are "punking us"
That only happens when you live in a dorm in East Lansing. Juvenile I know, but it is a rivalry week. Go Blue! Beat State!
It sounds to me like he was bringing up the little bro quote for a reason and carrying it forward. The bigger point of the article is that he doesn't like State because he felt disrespected by them. State failed to show any class or respect the last time we were there.
This is hardly shocking, though disappointing that the MSU coaches and administration have made this a personal thing. And I'm personally disappointed that we played into this gestalt with the skywriting. We're in no position to complain at this point. In the end, this is one article that says little and nothing new. Just informing us that State is still State and it's still a rivalry.
Hopefully, Fitz will find his payback on the field for MSUs prior insults to UM.
Everyone needs to stop pretending Mike Hart's little brother comments are the reason the losing streak started. Lloyd Carr's departure and the subsequent departure of all the talent are the reason for the losing streak.
As long as you win the game.
Better back it up.
"This is a business trip, but deep down, somewhere in my heart, it's personal. That's how I'm going to approach it."
I actually rather like how Toussaint puts this here. We can quarrel about the use of "little brother" (I think it refers more to a general historic mindset), but I do like the attitude that the team seems to have about this game this year. They expect a tough game and they seem to plan on giving exactly that back. I don't think we would expect any less, and I hope Fitz has the chance to show MSU just how disrespected he felt through his play, as I hope the whole team does.
Agree... OP has mis-read and created a problem where there is none. Hart took this to the next level not Fitz.
ever again. It's played out and gotten beyond stupid.
I've always hated this meme, and remains one of the few dark marks on Mike Hart's otherwise-positive tenure at UM. I hope UM wins this weekend because, well, that means they'll have a better chance of winning the division, but hopefully this dies quickly once the connection to that particular era fades.
It's interesting you feel that way, because I have the exact opposite view. I think most trash-talk is silly and eminently forgettable, but Hart calling State "little brother" was trash-talk virtuosity. That's how you do it--you say something that bites them so hard, people are stil bringing it up years later. I loved that quote then, I still love it now.
I know people don't like the little brother thing because now it's just a big thing that won't go away but that was the apex of trash talk. That one sentence Hart uttered got under MSU's skin so bad that it wont go away. Plus, we all know it to be true.
I love the quote too. You're never going to trash talk more effectively than Hart did there. The fact that it has run amok since then does not change the fact that it was a perfect jab
but the threads this week have been bad and we should all feel bad
I feel bad. Always. Not necessarily about threads, but I can add that to my list.
Win the game, Fitz, and you can call MSU a bunch of pussies for all I care.
Okay, not really, but just be ready to back it up.
Pound for pound the OP is the biggest Dbag on this site
I honestly never heard of him before, so he can't be all that bad. Besides, that's a big accusation, especially with ghostof______ being this blog's standing Sugar Ray Robinson of douchebaggery...
You should shut your mouth instead.
Toussaint needs to keep quiet and play football, which he has been average to poor at except for a few occasions. His overall body of work is so far down the list of Michigan running backs it is silly for him to be spouting off. Before labeling State he needs to establish himself.
The statements of players in their early twenties don't win or lose games. Mike hart didn't lose four games against Michigan state. The players, the depth and the lack of skill against the opponent lost those games. If coaches do their jobs and players step up and play how they should, we will be right in this game.
I fail to see where he is insulting them. I see where he is explaining where the nickname came from and how it bothers them.
I think more people need to read the article before reacting to the headline.
As a former over-user of the Little Brother meme, I'm over it, and have been since I vowed to stop using it after our 4th straight loss to MSU in '11. Here's a suggestion to Fitz for Saturday: Less running with your mouth, more running with your legs.
Get in their heads but back it up on the field. Show them why homie!!
No need to poke the enemy.
So what? People take this stuff way too seriously.
Besides, no matter what anyone associated with the University of Michigan says, MSU will find a way to spin it into an insult.
If Fitz had said MSU were "a bunch of pretty cool dudes," they would take that to mean he thinks they are cold, frigid, and incapable of love.
These kids should just shutup and play football. Why belittle the opponent? That's not being a "Michigan Man".
Show some base respect, otherwise the victory over the oppoent, whether by 12-10 or 42-0 just rings hollow. You just succeed in dimishing your own damn accomplishment. If Michigan beats MSU on Saturday, then it will be a great win, not a small feat.
trash about an opponent after you win and you do not have to play them again, like Hart.
Fitz plays for the University of Michigan, not the University of Miami.
So don't do it. Win or lose, you look foolish.
attitude about the postgame stuff in 2011, but I understand the chippy nature of the little brother comment, it combines the historical dominance Michigan has over MSU and the attitude that record has developed over time.
I do think that Dantonio has changed the mindset about the rivalry in EL and he has certainly made this game a reference point for the program, regardless of how Michigan perceives it. And this comes from a guy who came from Ohio and understood how that rivalry resonates beyond comparison. But in coming from that background, he brings the same intensity to his team in wanting to beat Michigan.
And that attitude is now reflected in the way Sparty carries itself on the field. And I think Michigan was bullied in 2011 and I think there is a difference atmosphere about this rivalry in EL than in Ann Arbor, just as I think that there is a difference in the atmosphere between Ann Arbor and Columbus when it is the stie for The Game.
Make no mistake, however, this is the season for both teams. This game is bigger than playing Ohio, because of the championship stakes involved. I want Michigan to play poised, confident and feisty on Saturday. Take no shit from these guys. And I think Fitz is projecting that attitude. And you know it's coming from Dantonio and Sparty. So why hide it?
is gaining 100 yards rushing, gaining key first downs and scoring touchdowns and not fumbling. That would also be my preference over bulletin board stuff.
They do the talking, we do the walking.''
This was taken out of context. Its bullshit how reporters fish for quotes and then the headlines are even more misleading.
What games have you been watching that make you think Green is better than Fitz right now? When Fitz has had good blocking (or any blocking for that matter) he's looked good.
Fitz looks bad because our O-Line has been atrocious at best. Fitz looked damn good two years ago when we had Molk anchoring the line.
A running back, 99 times out of 100, is only as good as his offensive line. Even Trent Richardson wouldn't have been as good as he was if he didn't have an O-Line full of NFL first rounders paving the way for him.
The players on both sides aren't going to be more or less motivated for this game than they already are, regardless of how the media leads gullible fans to interpret a rather innocuous statement.
Exactly, if you don't think we are getting MSU's best shot of the year saturday regardless of what is said you are crazy.
You mean to tell me that his comments won't give every player on MSUs roster 4.0 speed in the 40 yard dash and spidey senses?
I feel like this is one of those times where Michigan already has embarrassed themselves with the sky writing debacle and this doesn't help. Just say "yeah this is a big rivalry game for us, etc etc" and give cookie cutter answers and leave the trash talk to State. The focus should be on winning and further erasing that 4 game losing streak, I'm sick of this little brother junk. I didn't like it when Hart did it either.
I don't mind this. MSU is a rival even if they're not our biggest rival. I don't get all the politically correct b.s. This is college football not a work conference.
I think a great deal of the above posters need to re-evaluate what they consider "embarrassing." And the potshots at Fitz are just crass. Grow up.
This falls under the category of "I can't even find a reason to look for a shit to give."
Love it. I don't understand anyone here who doesn't want to embrace the bad blood between schools.
Talking about this of course. The alleged UM fans calling in right now are driving me crazy!! Be constructively critical if you must, but downright disparaging the team and its players to Mike Valenti is unacceptable.
Why any Michigan fan would listen to that trashy station is beyond me.
What sports station can I listen to instead? I still like their Tigers and Lions coverage. I tried to listen to the new station but gave up after hearing 2 or 3 homophobic comments in a 5 minute span. I know that doesn't bother some people, but it bothers me. I listen to Michigan Insider in the morning, but I'm not sure what else to listen to on the drive home.
Because if you don't take him seriously, Mike Valenti is downright hilarious.
97.1 is pretty fantastic, IMO.
If fitz could run and produce a victory this would be fine... but since he probably won't I'm not a fan of him running his mouth.
But if he wins saturday I will be the first to forget I ever wrote this and call him the greatest running back ever!
fuck state. I want this victory as bad as I have wanted a victory in a long time.
