First Take top 5 Big Ten teams

Submitted by Lil Michigan Man 7 on

So on ESPN's First Take Skip Bayless picked Michigan as the 5th best team in the Big Ten. His top four teams were Nebraska, Wisconsin, OSU, and MSU.

Skip Bayless is worthless..... But I have a hardtime faulting him for this pick. We are going through yet another coaching/scheme transition. Which for the national media means more losses / not knowing what to expect out of us. I personally think Michigan could finish in the top 3 of the big ten because of our returning talent and the smooth transition.

"Bottom line, the movie isn't that good, Heath Ledger is overrated as the Joker, and I still don't think Heath Ledger is dead. Show me the body or I'm going to assume he's still alive. That's just me. Show me the body. Back to you, Stephen A."

....Had

1 Neb

2 WIs

3 MSU

4 NU

5 OSU

Dana beat the drum for M then Skip took a moment to change it to NEB/WIS/OSU/MSU/M, then he went back to wait ing to bash Terelle Owens.

How he calls him Team Obliterator. Skip is straight up worthless as an above poster said. Little 5'6" college baseball player who is bitter for never being able to go pro, so what does he do? Spend his life's work bashing ridiculously good athletes. I remember when he said that if the NBA had a fantasy draft he would select Lebron with the 14th pick a couple years ago, like what a joke.

Skip Bayless is less than worthless. He is completly unprofessional, out of touch, and totally asinine in his arguments. In the turd sandwich that is the First Down desk he is the piece of shit.

You took that fumble and ran 99 yards with it son. Do you lie in wait all day praying for an opportunity like that to arise? Did you acquire some useless piece of gamebird-related information eight months ago and been looking for a way to crudely shoehorn it into a conversation ever since? As Rod Allen would put it- I see you.

Doubtful. IIRC, Iowa lost the most starters out of any team in the B1G. Adding to that, they lost their QB with no clear replacement, their star DE, and anyone considered to be on the depth chart at RB last year is gone or injured. I wouldn't be surprised if they failed to hit 6 wins.

I don't mean this as criticism of the OP (or even of Skip Bayless), but think about how uninformed rankings like these must be.  If you're Skip Bayless, you're expected to talk across several sports, all regions of the country, and a variety of angles.  No one has enough time in the day to speak intelligently on all of them.  The truth is that we all know a lot more about Big Ten football -- and especially U-M football -- than most of these guys.

When it comes to rankings, I listen to folks who spend all of their time on college football and win fans by being insightful rather than entertaining. Rankings like this really aren't worth a damn, even if they seem reasonable on the surface.

At this point, I hope I am wrong, but I would have to agree.  Too much uncertainty for this year.  I think we will be about here and possibly behind even iowa, psu, nw, or illinois.  That being said, we have the POTENTIAL for better, but it would be wrong to assume that, and I am glad we have at least this much credit.

Or is Nebraska being overrated? I think they are going to be good and definitely in the top half of the big ten, however this is the same team that got beat by Jake locker and Washington in their latest game. What has happened between that time and now that has "earned" them the big ten pre-season championship? I am not saying that they will be bad but there is a difference between going 9-3 and finishing 3rd or 4th in the big ten and winning it all.

They did blow out that same Washington team in Seattle earlier in the year.  I'm guessing just not giving a shit may have played as big a role as anything in their flat bowl performance.

At the same time, I don't buy the hype either.  Winning the Big 12 North doesn't really impress me at all.

State will finish 6-6 or 5-7.  After a loss to ND and consecutive losses to Ohio, Michigan, Wiscy, and Nebraska, they will be sitting at 3-5.  A trip to Iowa two weeks later will give them their sixth loss.  They will go into their final game against NW having to win to be eligible for the Pizza Pizza Bowl, or whatever it is called this year.  I think NW might beat them, too.

With any luck, Dantonio will be caught begging for the Ohio job, not get it, and fume while he loses the locker room the next two years before being fired.  This could create at least five more years of classic Sparty noooooo...

I can only hope this is true.  Their schedule certainly doesn't do them any favors.  Also, their offensive line is going to be a joke, so hopefully Cousins gets leveled all year and throws a plentiful amount of picks.  It seems like every sparty I know is talking B1G title as a certainty.  Even if your doomsday prediction is a little off, I don't see many of them being happy after the season is over.

I see your point, but the offensive line was supposed to be a joke last year as well. Our starting left tackle was decided 2 weeks before the first game, and the position was new to him. The O-Line this year is a lot younger, and I agree they will be the x-factor for this team's success, but last year's line had question marks, and this year's guys are rated higher and have more potential.

I completely agree with you. I have thought they would go 5-7 or 6-6 since I first saw their schedule the year. They were lucky at times last season and had a plethora of home games. Historically State does not do well after a loss to Michigan. A poor showing this year will discredit last years season and will usher in a new era of sub-par seasons with a few coaching changes.

And Mikoyan's Top 5 in the Big Ten:

1.  Michigan

2.  The Michigan Wolverines

3.  The Wolverines

4.  Big Blue

5.  That team that plays in the Big House.

Coincidentally that is his Top 5 in the NCAA with #6 being EMU and #7 being Navy.

Man, the B1G might be really terrible this year.  Perfect time for Michigan to stage a comeback.  The teams everyone says will be at the top return very few starters.  The obligatory returning starters chart from cornnation goes here.

  Offense Defense Special Teams Total
Michigan 9* 9 2 20
Purdue 7* 9 2 18
Northwestern 9* 7 1 17
Penn State 7* 8 1 16
Indiana 6 7 2 15
Minnesota 5 9 1 15
Illinois 6* 6 1 13
Michigan State 6* 6 1 13
Ohio State 8* 4 1 13
Nebraska 5* 7 0 12
Wisconsin 4 6 2 12
Iowa 5 4 1 10
