First Practice Video

Submitted by MgoSuh on

Looks like this video might have been lost in the shuffle last night, since I was advised to make a thread for it in the CTK Day 15 thread.

First practice video, with a first glimpse of Derrick Green and Shane Morris officially in the Maize and Blue.

1.  Lewan's 'stache.

2.  Lewan's 'stache.

3.  Lewan's 'stache.

Also great to see Fitz running again.

Is it just me, or did Mattison totally RPS Borges on the Gordon pick?

1. How is Fitz still a Junior (according to the video)

2.  Countess is called a junior too.  I thought we were going to hear before fall camp about his redshirt.  Did I miss that?

3. Fitz looks fast.  Green was running through people.  I expect Green's make or break moments will come with contact.  Will he be able to power through college kids or not.

4. I think Lewan is excited about Gardner and doing more pro style.  I think it could advantage him if the NFL scouts had any doubts about his ability in the pros based on the Denard-style offense we were running.

That's what I mean.  He runs through people, so we wont know anything about him until full contact drills.  (I am still feeling burned by Kevin Grady's inability to bring his power running to college football deep down inside.)

He was projected top 5 and possibly first overall last year, so I don't see the doubts of the NFL scouts. He should have a good chance to do some donkeying this year though.

they set it up like they were going to have Shane in an interview, but went to Lewan.  Which I guess makes sense...don't give freshmen a speaking part.  They have enough to concentrate on.

Do they always focus this much on ball security? It seems they finish every play by running to the endzone as every defensive player in sight tries to strip it.

is pretty standard even when in pads.  Even if they're wearing full gear, not all of the drills are tackle and are run similar to the videos except that there's a little more pop.

Yeah, but he hasn't yet. Literally every game since he has started, he's thrown a terrible INT (except maybe Iowa, that one wasn't too terrible). Even in the spring game he had one except Morgan dropped it. Just a funny coincidence that they put that in the video from the first practice.

Christ.  Ok, let's nip this is the bud before it gets worse.  No where have I even been down on Gardner's game.  I am well aware that he has scored way more TDs than thrown INTs, and I'm also well aware of the fact that the has a crazy high passer efficency through his starts.  But that also doesn't change the fact that he has thrown an INT in "literally every game he started."  This is a fact.  It is not indisputible.  This does not mean he won't be one of the best QBs in the B1G this year; I expect that of him. Can we not point out facts that Gardner has thrown an INT in his first five starts?  There was no extrapolation in my post. Can't I point out a funny co-incidence that they chose to include an INT in the footage?

Perfection, sunshine and people's asses aside, the guy was a WR who stepped in to QB a team running a patchwork offense.  Compared to his predecessor, Devin was supremely talented with ball security.  Maybe the commenter should have written, "Devin only threw 1 INT/game!  And lots more TD's!"

There's no problem with pointing out concerns, but Devin's performance last season (and in a short video of a practice) just isn't one of them.

But the pick at Iowa wasn't that bad, and it was when they were up 42-10. The pick in the bowl game was on a deep ball on 3rd and a billion. The Minnesota pick was a bad decision, but was hardly a brutal decision. The Northwestern pick was certainly brutal, but sh*t happens.

The flip-side is that he never threw multiple picks in any game, despite playing some really good defenses.

"This is a fact.  It is not indisputible."

The first sentence makes sense:  it is a fact that Gardner threw an interception in each of his first five starts.

What you MEANT to follow with was "It is indisputable" (that he threw 5 interceptions.) It is beyond dispute or argument, i.e., "indisputable."

What you WROTE/SAID was "It is not indisputable," i.e., it is open to argument, open to dispute.

We now return to our previous discussion on the passing prowess of Devin Gardner.

1998 was Tom Brady's first full season, and he had 15 TDs against 12 INTs. His TD-to-INT ratio improved dramatically in '99, throwing 16 TDs against 6 picks.

I'm not saying that DG is going to be Tom Brady, but simply pointing out that it's not unusual for QBs to struggle in the INT department early in their playing career.

Goto love the curl route from Gardner to Gallon to finish the video, I'm sure we will be seeing a lot of that this year. Also, was anyone else as scared as me when they showed Fitz's first carry of practice and someone kind of tackled his legs?
