"The University of Illinois is also in turmoil. The university sports an Interim Chancellor, an Interim Athletic Director, and an Interim Football Coach; the game will be played at Soldier Field, making this an Illini Interim Home Game."
Not really liking the live blog. I love reading EVERYONE's comments during a game thread... even the dumb ones.
Feel free to hijack this if you want. It's cool. I like the threads better too.
has anyone else noticed hoke hasn't had a headset on during the first half?
Yea I noticed that also. I see him coaching the guys up when they come off the field but I will pay attention to that going forward.
That's what you do as a head coach when you have two coordinators who are as seasoned as Mattison and Borges.
D is still work in progress. But ulcer feels a little less than last year. Still ulcer acid a coming. Oh boy...back to looking for progress.
Can't get a read on offense. First series was killer. Rest has been herky jerky.
Defense will have to steadily improve.
The offense...I think they are holding back a lot of stuff.
Special teams has looked pretty ugly.
I don't think so. No doubt there will be a few new O plays specifically tailored for ND next week. But that's probably going to be true of any team we will face in the future. I just don't think our O is "ready for prime time" yet.
We better not be holding back anything -- we could still end up losing this thing.
Cader is as good as advertised. He can pick you apart.
Yeah...if your coverage is soft and if you don't put pressure on him.
[Insert quarterback of any Michigan opponent in the last three years] has been really sharp today!
This was a joke. Sigh. Does a person really have to preface an obvious joke with: "I'm a huge Michigan fan"?
Yea I hear you but not his fault.
A whole lot of "meh".
I don't see how Borges' offense isn't a step down for Robinson when running the ball. He has something like 5 carries for 28 yards right now.
Last year he had 5 carries for 129 yards against BGSU. I understand that it's a different offense and I don't necessarily want Robinson running the ball 20 times a game again, but this running game hasn't really shown an ability to be explosive. So far it's just been solid.
I agree. I'm just hoping its because they want to keep everything super vanilla for the big game next week. I hope that's what it is.
He's still averaging 6.3 ypc for what it's worth. And Michigan has essentially had only three posessions. I kinda don't count that last one.
It's awfully early to make any kind of comparisons. Last year Denard didn't average 26 yards a carry every week.
I didn't mean it as a blanket statement for the season. I just meant that, despite what the OP said, there's no proof that Denard's rushing has remained the same. He hasn't had any explosive plays and has stats that are just okay when it comes to running the ball.
For all any of us know, he could explode for 100 yards in the fourth quarter.
To be fair, we haven't had tight cornerback coverage probably since Charles Woodson
On another note South Florida is up 16-0 at the half.
I think they might be guilty of looking ahead to their Week 2 matchup...
Strange both Michigan & ND are in rain delay.
Power just went out in NW indiana/South Bend. It's been trying to come back on, so hopefully it will return. Worst day ever for a power outage.
Was at my parents house for a cookout watching game when storm comes in and power goes out right before half! Uggh Sooo I decide after waiting a few minutes to drive the 15 minutes home hoping I have power. On way home listening to opening of second half on radio and they announce the thirty minute delay. What the heck mother nature....ITS OPENING WEEKEND OF MICHIGAN FOOTBALL!
I never understood why the corners were playing 8-10 yards off the receiver, always just thought it was a greg robinson thing. It's making carder's stats look great, he had a few good downfield throws but it's mostly hitting the WR behind the line and letting him make plays in space hence the 5.6 yard per completion.
The lack of a pass rush with our 4 linemen is a huge concern. Martin and van Bergen were expected to eat WMU's OG-C-OG trio for breakfast. And Roh has been completely invisible. Is he even playing? Offense looks good, but as expected, Denard is our only runner worth a damn.
Agree. WMU lost 4 starters and the next 3 to injuiries. We should be manhandling their line.
Oh that so 2010. Seriously I agree with your comments
Cader is good. But most decent QBs could be successful against this pass defense. Still way too soft.
I think I have seen more press coverage in this game than all of last season. It is a slippery slope when you ask inexperienced DB's to press a reciever. Can either work out really well or really bad. I think our DB's with their experience should be playing more press coverage.
The lack of pass rush is disturbing, especially with heat coming. The corners playing that far off is either because we just don't have the corners to man up or we are respecting the Hell out of those receivers.
...has been unhappy on the sideline. It really think he was expecting a better showing off 4 and 5 man rushes. Soft coverage is less of a killer when the QB is busy fleeing Martin.
and when we actually do get to him we miss him... Demens had a few clear lanes to Carder and he whiffed bad!
Western's had a lot of time to prepare for Denard, last year no one saw it coming, I'm not worried about it, he's had a few plays where he's been very close to breaking it open, but they're making tackles. The defense looks a lot better fundamental wise (tackling) than last year, which is encouraging, the rest is eh...WR's are catching passes though, Koger's caught 2 tough balls...hopefully we pull away and win the 2nd half and go on to ND 1-0! GO blue.
Patience! We will be fine! Give our coaches a chance to adjust!
It is the opening game and they have already said GM had to take out some defensive schemes because of the learning curve. I think the defense does look better than last year at least fundamentally if nothing else. I believe the rest will come. They needed somewhere to start at least they are showing promise.
Pillsbury biscuits with peanut butter are getting me through the delay. Nomnomnom.
Jeanine Edwards. Nomnomnom.
Peanut butter on Jeanine Edwards.. Nomnomnom.
Maybe it's something weird with her shirt and make-up combo, but her eyes are really creeping me out.
The running game may not be as explosive thus far, but Denard Robinson remains 100% healthy. This is not to be underestimated.
We're back on!
I'm looking at the game's stats. One TFL for the entire defense, Martin and Roh do not have a single stat.
Feels like we've become boring like Iowa on offense. I do miss RR's offense for the excitement and big play opportunities on every play...this just seems so bland in comparison. Yes, it's been pretty effective, getting 3-4 yards per play. If we are going to play this methodical type of offense, we need the defense to be way better. They can't be giving up points or our offense can't keep up.
Agree with everyone else, the lack of pass rush is killing us. Special teams is still awful. Overall I think this team is slightly behind where I expected them to be (loose coverage and special team "meh"). Offense is about what I expected.
Hoping the 2nd half brings better adjustments and play. So far, I don't see anyone who can take this team over on offense. I see lots of spreading the ball around, but if the team falls behind, Denard can't get those big runs like he used to...who is going to step up? RBs for the most part have been steady but quiet. I think that missing an elite RB is going to hurt us at some point, Denard is still our only true threat.
Christ our safeties are lined up so far back they could be shopping over at Fingerle. Maybe Kovac is going to build a bitchin treehouse after the game.
Or he was just picking up a 2x4 to club Carder with...that works too.
