Firing pays off - U-M triples giving Tuesday goal

Submitted by JediLow on

It looks like firing Hoke has already paid off for the University - instead of the $1 million in donations goal that they had for yesterday (Hoke firing day!/Giving Tuesday) they ended up with $3.2 million (way more than they expected). I can't see how those two events aren't connected.

I was watching the basketball game yesterday, and with about 2 minutes left in the 2nd half I received a cold call from them.  My mistake was answering, I suppose, but I spent the next minute and a half trying to politely hang up on them.  It was a feat of superhuman restraint that I managed to avoid being a complete asshole.  Come on guys, situational awareness.

They called me on Monday. I doubt I would have had as much restraint as you did if they called me during the game. Besides the people that call (at least me) are always students, shouldn't they be watching as well?

You do realize that the University of Michigan is about a lot more than football and basketball?

You also realize that yesterday was "Giving Tuesday," the best day of the year for non-profits to ask for donations?  Come on guy, situational awareness.

I know?

Some people here may be shocked to learn that the vast majority of Michigan alumni don't give a @$&* about Michigan sports, basketball infinitely more so than football.  So the fact that a donation call came during the last two minutes of a basketball game, WHICH WAS PLAYED ON THE BIGGEST DONATION DAY OF THE YEAR, is not surprising if you understand the concept that "OMG, not everybody who went to Michigan is exactly like me!"

"I can't see how those two events aren't connected."

I can't see how they are either.  There may have been some effect, but a direct correlation between the two will never really be known...not without a poll of those who donated.

I receive a "donation" letter in the mail. I think to myself "isn't that nice, a day after we finish a nauseating season, I'm asked to contribute $700 for season tickets. I'm not giving an effing dime." Things take an abrupt turn, and they show they want to make a change to improve their football team, I think "hell yea, here's $700 and an extra $300 for your troubles"
