Finebaum rips Urban Meyer

Submitted by GoWings2008 on
I'm sure some saw this and I apologize for the world wide leader content, but the story I read was released on a Fox source. Although the mouth of the South isn't on my list of faves, he is on point with how urban has handled his program this year. The quote I love is one that I've suspected would happen since the day he was hired in Columbus: " I’ve seen this movie before with Urban Meyer at the University of Florida and it looks like it’s repeating itself in Columbus." A leopard...errr.... Snake.... Doesn't change his spots, ladies and gentlemen. I suspect this isn't the last controversy we'll hear about in the next year or two. Taken in a vacuum this one loss is hardly noteworthy. But keeping in mind how quickly Meyer led Florida into the abyss and  then simply walked away citing dubious reasons, a wary eye on Meyer and the program is warranted.

People dismiss this as "wishful thinking" but having lived in FL through his tenure at UF the similarities are striking. Yes, just first conference loss and all, but look beyond the wins and losses and there really are troubling sings a lot like happened before his departure from UF.

If you think this noise is loud now, wait until next year when OSU struggles (relatively) due to their schedule and experience level.

You are what perception says you are, sometimes. I personally think Urban has matured and made the right life-balance choices since his Florida meltodwn and a similar thing wont happen at OSU, but the parallels to his final lost season at Florida following the 'Bama CCG loss and next year's potential (probable?) 2-3 loss season will be all media types need to hot their takes.

Buckle up!

Reflux problems really can mirror heart problems. My mom appeared to have a heart issue not too long ago. It took a battery of tests - and a surprising amount of time - to learn it was just a reflux issue. I have no idea about Meyer, of course, but what he described should not be taken as obvious b.s.

A friend of mine was being rushed to the hospital for a heart attack. He had a hard time breathing, severe tightness in his chest. He said it felt like someone was standing on his chest. Cold sweats, panicking. He farted. Everything cleared up and he went home before ever getting to the emergency room. True story, hand to God. Maybe that happened to Meyer.

mimic a heart attack, but being a quadruple bi pass patient I want to warn you. I wish that were not true. It wastes valuable time to get your ass in to the hospital and get that stress test. Then you add in a little denial, who the hell wants to go to the hospital knowing you may soon be getting your chest cavity opened with a saw, well I did'nt either but I wanted to live and guess what? It saved my life.

You see one of your arteries can't close and you live through it. Its called the widow maker mine was blocked 90% and a chess match could have killed me. So don't even think you have reflux when you are sleeping to much, get out of breath easy and have chess pains or aches that last longer than a couple minutes. Go to the hospital it may  save your life like it did mine. If not you have my permission to go get a pack of tums.

I don't know the average consensus, but my personal opinion is he suffered a legitimate medical episode, brought on by stress from work and home, and it freaked him out. I wouldn't be shocked if he received an ultimatum from his wife "take some time off and change your work life or you're gonna lose us," which is why so much of an emphasis was placed on renewing the relationship with his family in the aftermath of quitting Florida.

I think the idea he quit because of Saban, a guy who he was only gonna play once a year at worst anyway from the opposite division, is absurd. If he was "afraid" of Saban, he was gonna have to play him from anywhere. High level successful coaches like Urban (or anyone) at that level are way to egomaniacal for me to believe they'd quit and run away because of another coach.

Now, if you wanna say the upcoming bad season due to the dynamics of Florida's offensive roster pushed him away, that's fair. But I'd be more inclined to think the lack of a good QB/RB/WR created job stress and the medical episode, not some scenario where he would have quit if he was 100% healthy and just had shitty players.

Yea it's probably hilarious when people suffer heartburn and have to take medicine to get it under control. Funny stuff. I'm not gonna suggest he had a heart attack or anything, but recurring heartburn and severe headaches brought on by stress sounds like something I wouldn't want to deal with.

What choice did UM have? Was suspending his top back - a Heisman candidate - even an option? No way. He had to support him - no way was he even going to consider playing us without him.

The real hell begins next year when OSU loses 3/5 of OL 3/4 of DL, best WR, best RB, 2 of 3 LBs, and maybe a DB or two.

And plays Oklahoma, UM, MSU, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Northwestern.

9-3 will feel like hell for those poor saps who have been spoiled beyond belief.

Its really 2/4 of the DL ... they've used several DT's next to Washington this season and the injury to Schutt got some other guys some playing time. Only DB I think they might lose early would be Bell and I'm not convinced of that.

Nobody will be questioning their schedule next year and I've got to believe that 9 or 10 wins will be a successful year going up against that schedule with their roster turnover next season.

They lost one game to a very good program (as much as it pains me to say that) in weather that hindered their ability to take advantage of their presumed superiority in the air. And then one player questioned the offense's play calling and then quickly apologized. It's really premature to suggest they're imploding.

Lets just win this sat i could care less if they drown in their own shit..neither of our rivals want to see us do well or felt bad when we were a tire fire. If osu or msu burns down tomorrow i could care less.

ever heard a Paul Finebaum broadcast?   I had sirius radio and on the pm drive home in the D I listened to him for about a year.  Its southern redneck schtick with billies and jimbobbies on the show expressing their semi-literate opinions of the crimson tides inevitable slide to the NC.  Its entertaining but as my mother used to say, decidedly low brow.   Meyer runs his team in a way that builds success rapidly with promises and coddling the stars.  It works but doesnt build a lasting juggernaut like saban/Bama, so for that part of Finebaums critique I agree with.  Of course Finebaum doesnt want to talk about sabans method$ for stockpiling all that talent.   Anyway I believe there is an endgame to Meyer at OSU similar to what happened in Gainesville but no doubt Meyer is a great coach and he upset Alabama last year which was worth the price of admission.

I spent some time in c-bus, not by choice.  Work related thing at the university you know, anyway the women there were, hm, how can I say this nicely?  Lets just say from the shoulders down they were put together well, but from the neck up...well..you have seen the mascot right?   That comparison would be kind.

Gotta say, I thought Finebaum was pretty spot on with his comments there:

"“I just don’t like what Urban said yesterday, when he acted like it was the media’s fault. ...Ezekiel Elliott was not under siege there.  This wasn’t him walking out of the stadium; he was holding court,"

Urban talks "tough love", but certainly does have a history of enabling the better athletes on his squads.

"But I just think he needed to get this team more grounded. I think that train left long ago. I think the culmination was a mess on Saturday in Columbus.”

I am going to have to agree with others here - until there is a consistent pattern of game plans that turn out to be wet farts and player behavior which turns wet farts into something even more detrimental, it might be a smidge early to pull the alarm in Columbus. Of course, it may happen in time if we're going to use Florida as the basis for the assumption, but we're probably not there quite yet.

Most OSU fans don't care about appearances. As long as the team is winning, particularly against Michigan, they will excuse a lot. Tressel is a hero in Columbus and he's the guy that got the program punished by the NCAA.

...will be prompted by Jim Harbaugh....

...as will the departure of Mark Dantonio from MSU--assuming JH stays long enough at Michigan.

The other stuff is a side show.  Once the Michigan machine starts to roll again--sucking up recruits and winning games--the B1G East is going to seem like a very inhospitable environment for other coaches.

"Having accomplished my purpose in coming to The Ohio State Uinversity--winning a national championship--I feel that it is time to devote myself to my family and to my faith..."

Seems like Finebaum has just been waiting for one poorly played game that results in a loss to unleash this venom. Seems contrived to me.

As I've said before about the Elliot rant - he wasn't histrionic, he was actually very matter of fact, and everyone ignores the other things he said  - that they win as a team, and that this team will respond and be better the following Saturday. I guess I have a hard time getting bent out of shape over an emotional 18-22 year old doing what Elliot did Saturday and condeming a whole program for it.

Beyond that, what are the signs, a poorly executed QB competition (who does those well??), a one game suspension for a DUI arrest (pretty standard in FBS), and an emotional player saying something to the media he shouldn't have ... sorry, the wheels aren't coming off the bus in my eyes, not yet anyway.
