Fight Songs: the good, the bad, the epically bad

Submitted by MBAgoblue on

Playing NCAA 11 has forced me to mute the sound when I play USC, Oklahoma, and FSU.  My god, those songs are annoying. On the other hand, I often schedule Army or Navy because I like those songs. Also, I'm ashamed to say, the Bama song has grown on me. The list (with The Victors on top):

Good:

Army, Navy, Bama, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, and as much as it hurts me to admit it, Notre Dame

Bad:

Minnesota, Ohio State, Michigan State

Epically Bad:

Oklahoma, FSU, USC

Any others to add to the list?

EDIT: Worst line in any fight song is in Washington's:

It's harder to push them over the line

Than pass the Dardanelles.

Oklahoma has, objectively, the worst fight song ever. It's especially bad since they play it every 8 seconds during a 60 minute game.

I don't know how there aren't mass suicide issues with the Sooner Band...

Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner

Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner

Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner

Boomer Sooner, OK U!

Oklahoma, Oklahoma

Oklahoma, Oklahoma

Oklahoma, Oklahoma

Oklahoma, OK U!

I'm a Sooner born and Sooner bred

and when I die, I'll be Sooner dead

Rah Oklahoma, Rah Oklahoma

Rah Oklahoma, OK U!

Good:  Auburn, Georgia, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Alabama, Penn State, Iowa (War Eagle tops the list for me)

Bad:  Clemson/LSU (same Tiger Rag garbage), Michigan State

Terrible:  Tennessee (Rocky Top isn't technically their fight song but it gets real old hearing it every two minutes in Neland)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Notre Dame. Regardless of how I feel about the team and the school, the Victory March is pretty damn good.

One more loss for ol' Notre Dame,

Came to Ann Arbor, they left with shame.

Could not run; they could not pass;

They could not stop our small tailback...

Go back to South Bend, hang your head low,

Reflect on the score: thirty-eight to 'oh

This loss was just par for course

For the losers of Notre Dame!

Haha.  I like my school's fight song but we never play it at the game.

Instead we play a song called "Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba" after every good play... and it gets annoying as hell.  I hope I don't hear it too many times on Sept. 25th.  Actually never would be fine.

The lyrics to "Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba"

Ay Ziggy Zoomba Zoomba Zoomba

Ay Ziggy Zoomba Zoomba Ze

Ay Ziggy Zoomba Zoomba Zoomba

Ay Ziggy Zoomba Zoomba Zi

Roll along, you B-G warriors

Roll along, and win for B-G-S-U.

lol.  Don't know why they picked Ay Ziggy Zoomba.  So annoying.

Call me crazy, but when you put them against the truly bad like Northwestern and Indiana and Purdue and some of the other major duds out there, I don't know how you could think either of the OSU fight songs are "bad."  I mean, there are some BAD fight songs out there.  Across the Field and Buckeye Battle Cry don't even compare.

Now, the one that's a guilty pleasure for me is Iowa.  Composed by Meredith Willson, the guy who did the Music Man.  It's hokey in a not-so-bad way.

I was playing NCAA '11 on my lunch break. M v. Texas and was thinking at the time how bad the song was...Woolfolk had a nice one handed int, btw.

I may get negged for this, but I really don't have a problem with osu's fight song (save for when I hear it on game day relentlessly). I guess it just reminds me of that time of year and the anticipation of The Game.

for the other thread but, yeah, that probably was a bridge too far.

Still, regardless of the horror it still makes me laugh, just like Japanese game shows make me laugh despite Pearl Harbor.

I like USC's fight song...what I don't like is hearing it played after every positive yardage play.

Oklahoma's is without question the worst and unfortunately, like USC, they play it about 500 times per game.

This is Michigan

The frequency at which you here the USC fight song makes it annoying. I was at the 2008 Rose Bowl (U of I vs USC), they play that song every single down. It was in my head until my ears popped on the plane ride back.

How many schools use the tune of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" for their fight song?  It seems like about half the schools in the SEC do.

Does anyone know a good source of fight song mp3's?  They're certainly not on itunes, and going to each school's marching band website yields spotty results.

Perhaps the obnoxiousness of the ND fanbase is transferred to the song. A Domer once told me that the ND Fight Song was among the most recognized songs in the world - not fight songs, songs period.

Oh, and always call it the ND Fight Song in a presence of a Domer. It makes Catholic blood boil when you repeatedly "forget" to call it the Victory March. Good times.

Tell your Domer friend that there's only one fight song in the College Football Hall of Fame.  And it's not the Victory March.

You can also tell him that the guys who wrote ND's fight song were inspired to write it after a loss to Michigan on the football field in which they observed Wolverine fans singing a joyous march song called, 'the Victors,' and they figured that the Irish needed a school song of their own.

So basically, it wasn't enough that we taught them the game of football in 1887 or the fact that they copied their stadium off of ours in 1930. But we also had a direct result on the creation of their fight song.

We've certainly given them many things, haven't we?

besides Michigan, I've been partial to CMU's. But then again, I heard that song a ton of times while drinking in the student section, so it grew on me and gives me great memories.

Is it football season yet?

I actually like ND's because it's my high school's. Some in the Big Ten I like are Northwestern's, Iowa's, Minnesota's, and Wisconsin's. I also like Toledo's and CMU's.

USC's, Texas's, and Penn State's kinda suck. Oklahoma's isn't too bad.

Florida State and Miami have epically bad fight songs.  I love to watch that matchup every year.  If there was some way to tune out their bands, everything would be perfect.  Especially when FSU plays that damn Braves chant after every...single...play, good or bad.
