Fiesta Bowl open thread
I realize the basketball game is on right now too, but I can't wait to watch this game. I wish these teams hadn't lost and this was the national championship.
I have to root for Bill Snyder and the Wildcats. Guy is a hell of a coach and 12 wins would be a school record.

They are hot! Awesome uniforms too!
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:52 PM ^
That blocked XP almost ended up as another 2 pt conversion for Oregon.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:56 PM ^
Will you settle for a 1 pt safety?
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:59 PM ^
Well... You were close. Off by one point
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:53 PM ^
Game over. Not enough fire power from KState to win this won
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:56 PM ^
Even if they had the requisite firepower, I don't Kansas State can play enough defense to outsore Oregon by 22 points in the last ~23 minutes or so.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:55 PM ^
LOLwut?
Okay, now I've seen everything.
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:56 PM ^
The commercials for this game have been fucking amazing.
I mean seriously? farmersonly.com, a dating site exclusively for farmers?
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:57 PM ^
1 point safety...don't see that every day
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:13 PM ^
Can someone please explain how this happened?
January 3rd, 2013 at 10:57 PM ^
one point safety in football ever.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:00 PM ^
The more I wish it was Oregon v Bama on monday Night....that would have been the game to see....too bad
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:00 PM ^
New score prediction idea for Brian? I think so.
We will win our opener 23-1.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:03 PM ^
I don't believe that is possible...the TD scoring team can be the only one getting a 1 pt safety apparenty
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:07 PM ^
Why would that be? I mean it'd be ridiculous but what if the kicker picked up the ball and took it all the way back into his own endzone?
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:12 PM ^
But i thought if the ball got back to the opposing endzone, that it would be a 2 pt conversion for them, no?
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:16 PM ^
Lets say the holder for the kick just picks up the ball, walks back to his own endzone, and takes a knee. That would be a safety, no?
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:24 PM ^
who knows, this is all new to me man
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:25 PM ^
Not if the PAT team had the ball. It'd be similar to if a team had the ball on offense, say 1st & goal at the one ... and ran 105 yards backwards for some reason and got tackled in the endzone.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:16 PM ^
Wouldn't that be a normal safety?
Ron Cherry help us!!!
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:21 PM ^
might be too busy discussing someone giving someone else the business
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:22 PM ^
Rules are the same both ways, right? If the defending team blocked the kick and returned it for a "TD," it would only be 2 points.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:28 PM ^
Wikipedia has all the answers:
"a one point conversion safety can only be scored by the offense in high school and professional play;[19][21] however, in college play a conversion safety can be scored by either the offense or the defense.[20] Although a defensive conversion safety has never been scored, it is the only possible way a team could finish with a single point in an American football game.[22]

Wikipedia is slightly wrong on this one, a 1 pt safety has occured before in college

Conversion attempt recovered by defensive team, they try and run it back for a two point conversion. Offense goes to prevent it after he's run say 95 yards, and causes the defender to fumble it. Someone on offense recovers, but doesn't fall on it. Picks it up to try ad return it back for 2 or just is stupid. Runs back into his own end zone, then is tackled. 1 point conversion.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:28 PM ^
It's a 3 point safety if you get tackled in your own endzone while receiving the business from the tackling player.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:11 PM ^
That's impossible
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:12 PM ^
You need a td to get a one point safety.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:16 PM ^
Lets say the holder for the extra point just picks up the ball, walks back to his own endzone, and takes a knee. That would be a safety, no?
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:24 PM ^
According to wikipedia, the defense can score safety on a conversion attempt, which is worth one point:
A much rarer occurrence is the one-point conversion safety, which can be scored by the offense on a try attempt. In college football, the defense can also score a conversion safety; while this has never happened, it is the only possible way an American football team could finish a game with a single point.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:16 PM ^
At first I was thinking this would be impossible because you'd have to score 1st ... but I suppose the other team could score, botch a play, somehow fall all the way back to their own endzone, and be tackled in their own endzone for a 1 point safety. Assuming that'd be a 1 point safety as opposed to just a failed PAT.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:22 PM ^
One possible scenario: the extra point is blocked and the defense returns it almost the whole way, but an offensive player manages to strip the ball at the last second and fall on it in his team's own endzone, giving up one point (but not two).

If you were wondering, yes, the referee in this game is the one who gave this legendary call:
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:19 PM ^
Ron Cherry just peaked in life...a one point safety
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:30 PM ^
He's the man. Jim Delaney needs to pay whatever it takes to get him in our conference.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:18 PM ^
has a funny looking release and that might be the thing that hurts his NFL chances, at least he can take solace in the fact that he has a hot wife.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:48 PM ^
His only chance is wide receiver or Tim Tebow Wildcat package.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:32 PM ^
is almost following last nights script, scorewise
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:32 PM ^
Why would you not just blitz the hell out KState? They aren't a vertical threat IMO.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:41 PM ^
I don't understand why Kansas State was taking their sweet ass time on the last drive
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:50 PM ^
This actually turned out to be a relatively boring game, IMO. After the opening kickoff fireworks it just seemed like blah.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:52 PM ^
I was about to say the same thing. Tool Kenjon Barner and the Ducks offense a while to get going. Oregon's defense looked very solid.
January 4th, 2013 at 1:54 AM ^
Any game, and I mean ANY GAME, that features a one point safety is not boring. That and Oregon got to 35 as such: 8-15-22-25-32-35...those look like some mighty fine powerball numbers to me.
January 3rd, 2013 at 11:51 PM ^
The Oregon fight song is pretty crappy. They need to come up with a better one.
January 4th, 2013 at 12:20 AM ^
I watch Oregon and i'm a little bit sad. There was a time when they were our goal-state offense, when we had Denard and Tate, and our "spread and shred" was shiny and new and all things were possible.
Now Denard is gone and the last remains of the spread offense will be packed up and stored away.
It was a fun dalliance or a while. But summer vacation is over and now it's back to school.
January 4th, 2013 at 12:42 AM ^
Rich Rod's offense is not the same as Oregon's. Oregon's is more pass oriented.
January 4th, 2013 at 12:26 AM ^
Hello, NFL. Didn't give much indication he'd be back, and confirmed that his agent is talking; he was just waiting until the end of the season.
