A few recruiting notes

Submitted by Gobluegr on

Detroit News had an article about how Urban Meyer would affect Michigan and Michigan Sate recruiting. There was a lot about Brionte Dunn and it seems like Michigan might even lead OSU for his services. http://www.detnews.com/article/20111124/OPINION03/111240401/1004/SPORTS…;

Scout.com had free excerpts from a Magazine article about Mitch McGary and Michigan basketball recruiting. It is a great read, and includes this money quote about Mitch McGary "I think he’s got some pit bull in him; and I’ve had a chance to see him play six or seven games. I saw him at the Orlando Showcase. I saw him at the Top 100 camp, and I try to put in context how unique he is…now I’m not saying he’s this guy, but I played with Charles Barkley, and he reminds me a lot of him from the standpoint that he’s a little wild and crazy out there. He grabs a rebound; he’ll go the length of the court, and he’ll dunk on somebody, then he’ll talk some trash, and then two plays later he’ll go over and apologize and say “I shouldn’t’ have done that, we’re ok?” http://michigan.scout.com/2/1132229.html

A final note, Rivals is releasing their updated 2012 football rankings next Monday and they will have 7 new five stars. Kyle Kalis was the highest rated 4 star on Rivals, so his chances of receiving a fifth star seem quite high.

I did all the cooking - turkey Provencal style with Gratin Dauphinois, homemade stuffing, and traditional fixings as French-ified by yours truly. I enjoy making my Thanksgiving continental somehow. My in-laws think I am strange though.

I deserve my MGoBlog time today.

I let the whole team down this year. Switched to Afternoon/night schedule for work so I didn't cook a thing this morning. Passed the torch to someone chomping at the bit, though. I miss my delicious bird with celery sauce, my 3 potatoes, my acorn squash, my fruit pies, my quennelles bonna femmes, my carrottes flamandes... I sat on my ass after sleeping until 2pm and watched football in my pajamas until dinner. Now Mgoblog.

Well...not to be negative....but we all know how rivals works and while 99% of us know he should probably be a five star he did miss a few games this year.

Sadly, in the world of rivals recruiting missing game by injury is more than enough reason to drop in ratings. Scout is the same way, look at Kaleb Ringer, from mid to high 4 star to 3 star because of injury.

But although Kalis missed a few games, when he was scouted by Rivals they raved about his play. He was named the number one player when scouted by Helmholdt at the end of October. Helmholdt had this to say:

The nation's No. 22-ranked prospect had another impressive performance on Saturday, despite his team's loss in its rivalry game against St. Ignatius. One of the things to like about Kalis is that he brings the same level of intensity on every play and in every game. His physical tools have been well documented, but Kalis also has the intangibles. Whenever St. Edward had a crucial third down to pick up, they ran it behind Kalis. He has had a rough year with injuries, and still has his right arm heavily bandaged, but his play showed no sign of the injuries diminishing his capacity. Because he is already filled out, Kalis is not given enough credit for how good of an athlete he is. His footwork is among the best I have ever seen, and his pass pro technique is nearly flawless. The offensive line position is one of the hardest to play early in college, but Kalis will have as good a shot to step on the field in 2012 as any high school lineman in this class.

Kalis was also impressive when St. Ed's played Don Bosco, and was given alot of praise for that performance. The way Rivals has spoken of him, I would be shocked if he's not given that fifth star.

Why does anyone in this world think that Urban Meyer will be a better recruiter than Tressel?

Tressel knew the state of Ohio and all of the significant programs coaching staffs for years via recruiting with Youngstown State.  He was able to nearly lock down the state of Ohio for a decade.  That in part, is why our talent levels during that period fell.  No recruit will be able to even remotely believe that Meyer will be around for their entire tenure at Ohio, there is simply too much baggage...ask the Florida fans of the world (if you can stand to talk to them).  Also, it is apparent to everyone on this planet that Urban is certain he is the most important person out there.  He probably leaked all of the media frenzy that is going on right now just for attention.  I'm retiring, not retiring, dying, not dying, telecasting, not telecasting, coaching, not _________. Just fill in the blank.

Dear Urban:

Would you please just make up your mind on what you want to do?  This seemingly annual charade you play with all of us was old a few years ago and now it's even more annoying if that's possible  If you want to coach OSU - go coach OSU.  Quit playing these games with everyone just to stay in the news.

Nobody likes a media whore.

Sincerely,

Brett

Part of me doesn't want to really believe it until I see him at a podium talking about his plans for Ohio State. That being  said, I have a hard time believing these plans are long-term, so I am not sure exactly how he would materially affect recruiting.

Even if Meyer does go to OSU, we're competitive in the state of Ohio again, so at least there, I would like our chances with just about anyone we put effort into recruiting. The door was left open just long enough to get our new message out, I think.

Remember why Tressel was able to erect "fortress Ohio".  He did not recruit kids in California, Texas, Florida or Pennylvania anywhere near as aggressively as did Cooper before him. He went hard after the kids in his back yard and Ohio boys won all ties with Tressel.   If he had a choice between a 3 star kid from here in Ohio or a 4 star from somewhere else he bought local so to speak.  And by doing so he earned the undying loyality from virtually every high school coach across the state.

Not sure if Mr Meyer will share that home-grown philosophy.  I can't quite see him not taking a kid from Florida just to keep a high school coach here in Ohio happy.  And when he does he'll be in the same dogfight for talen that OSU coaches before Tressel always had with us.  Woody included.

I see Meyer as trying to recruit as he did at Florida, and I don't think his ties to Ohio are so strong that he would forego more fitting recruits for his system just because high school coaches in Ohio are trying to funnel kids to OSU. Indeed, I see Meyer, if he took the job, as a benefit to Michigan recruiting in that state.

I also think Meyer's offense hurts them in recruiting.  Quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers who want to operate in an NFL type system are going to shy away from going there. Even if it happens, it is way better than more years of relentless state ownership by JT.

Meyer will get good players because OSU is a good program in a talent rich state and he is a good coach. But we'll still get our fair share of good players from Ohio because Hoke and Co. recruit their asses off and I don't expect that to stop anytime soon.

How the roles will be reversed.  Ohio will be running the spread and recruiting slot ninjas and Michigan will be recruting the nfl pocket passers and road grading linemen.

Also, Meyer will find it much harder to recruit with his best recruiter now luring kids to michigan with the promise of being the next Ray Lewis or Haloti Nata

Hope they update the kids heights and weights this time. Stacey and Braden are both nearly 50 pounds heavier than the last time the weights were posted. Braden said he was 6'7" a few weeks ago also.

I wonder if the new rankings will take into account the players performances in their respective state playoffs as well or were figured some time ago and are only now being released.
