A few minor recruiting notes

Submitted by Gobluegr on
Steve Wiltfong of 247 sports was at Eastern Michigan for the last two games that took place last night (Brother Rice vs Detroit King and Cass Tech vs Famington Hills Harrison). He wrote a free story on all the top players in the games. Although there isn't much new about the Cass Tech game (most was covered on a previous thread) it's still nice to see it from another perspective. He also had good things to say about 2013 prospect Jon Reschke (Brother Rice) "The Future247 linebacker from Brother Rice had nine tackles and a fumble recovery in the victory over King. The hard-hitting Reschke was consistently around the football, moving well sideline to sideline. Standing in at 6-foot-2, 223 pounds, Reschke has a good first step and is also fluid when dropping into pass coverage." http://247sports.com/Article/Big-Day-Prep-Showdown-standouts-37273 Earlier this week the Detroit News ranked the top 20 high school seniors in Michigan. Of them the #1,2,3,4,8, 9,12 players in the state commited to Michigan. This came in three different segments, broken up into the #1 player: http://detnews.com/article/20110824/SPORTS05/108240317/TOP-FOOTBALL-PLA… #2-10: http://detnews.com/article/20110824/SPORTS05/108240357/TOP-PLAYERS--2-10 #11-20: http://detnews.com/article/20110824/SPORTS05/108240354/TOP-PLAYERS--11-…

And I think Burbridge will move up, from all account he sounded like a really good player, maybe the best on the field.  Does anyone know how solid his MSU commitment is?  I thought he was high on Michigan but told he couldn't commit til his grades were in order, is there any chance he switches if he gets qualified?

This is not true. Why do people keep saying this? Wiltfong has a free article up about the game, so does the Detroit news, and Terry held his own, even by other. It's not like Burbridge had an awesome game. 3 catches and about 54 yards. Terry wasn't spectacular, but he also had a pass break-up in 1-on-1 coverage with Burbridge in the end zone. The big knock on Terry is his weight, which is true, hence why he got knocked around supporting the run a little. But he has silky smooth hip movement and enough closing speed to run with about any HS receiver out there. He'll be solid for us in the future. If we're going to worry about anyone, it should be RJS. It sounded like Harrison ran all over Cass, and RJS is the MLB I believe. But I don't know if that's because he was getting doubled all night or something.

I have been a high school football coach for 25 years now.  Fans do not always know the whole story.  Kids can have injuries....tweeked ankle, sore shoulder, sore hamstring etc. that keep them from performing at their highest level.  It is a long season and a player should not be  judged on one game alone.  You never know what other circumstances came into play.  There have not been many games that I have coached where our entire roster of kids were healthy and played at their highest level.

I am not saying that I know anything about T Rich and his performance, but keep that in mind

And Braden down at #12? I agree that this is a reasonable list of the better players in Michigan, but I think that the order that the players are ranked in is pretty far off. I anticpate Braden and O'Brien will show that they should be higher, and likely Godin will as well.

Not that I'm a shameless homer or anything . . .    ;)

"Richardson is what he is. I've certainly seen shorter corners do big things. Height may be one of the more overrated aspects of evaluating corners-as in sometimes folks get locked in on it and completely disregard speed (the most important thing), hips, toughness, etc. That being said, we clearly overrated Richardson to begin with (my bad on that), but it's not like he has no chance. He's got a chance-and quite a good one."

Cass Tech looked overmatched and was out coached. A multitude of penalties, totally ineffective on defense,, and an inept offense. Richardson is tiny. Burbridge showed excellent run-after-the-catch ability. Funchess has good wheels for a TE. Ojemudia displayed excellent quickness. RJS did little of note. In fact, most of Cass Tech did little of note. It was a clunker for Cass as a whole.

I would really appreciate a little more in depth analysis on why T-rich supposedly had such a bad game....Burbridge had 3 catches for 54 yards and I heard at least one of those catches was when Cass was in a zone and T-rich wasn't even on him.....maybe Burbridge was beating him consistently but the ball just wasn't getting there? Just curious.....

Also it was funny how some MSU fans were discrediting Mario's incredible performance because the competition wasn't very good, however they are jizzing in their pants about Burbridge...they played against the same team.

Richardson wasn't locked up on Burbridge every play.   What Burbridge did statistically had everything to do with Harrison spreading the ball around and really nothing to do with Richardson.  The main point most people have on Richardson is that he is really small and to me wasn't that athletically gifted as say the TE from Harrison or Burbridge.  Nothing stood out about him physically nor did he make plays.

Of course this is just high school football and a lot can change.  Those poor Cass Tech kids were over matched by what might be the best team in the state.  And, what might be the best Harrison team.

I was extremely impressed with Dennis Norfleet .. the kid is small, but tough, fast as hell, and can frickin put the moves on. He looked like a great back.
