A few minor recruiting notes 12/19

Submitted by Gobluegr on
OL Dan Gibbs set his official visit to Michigan for January 13. For those who don't know about him he is a preferred walk on candidate and a three star on scout and 247. http://michigan.247sports.com/Board/59424/Dan-Gibbs-sets-Michigan-offic… ... 2013 DB Jayme Thompson is making his college decision on New Years Day, he is choosing between Michigan, Notre Dame, and West Virginia. He doesn't have a Michigan offer yet, but if he gets one then Michigan is the favorite to land him. http://michigan.247sports.com/Board/59424/2013-ATH-deciding-between-thr… ... Wolverine 247 has and article about the top performers at the Adidas Maximum Exposure Camp this past weekend. It's a good read to see about the future talent in Michigan, but is a little optimistic about some of the players. http://michigan.247sports.com/Article/Morris-leads-the-way-at-SMSB-53523 ... 247 sports also had an article about Good Counsel RB/LB Dorian O'Daniel (early 4 star on scout and 58th nationally on 247). He says that coach Mallory is one of the coaches who has been in touch with him the most, and he has expressed some genuine interest in Michigan in other articles. http://247sports.com/Article/ODaniel-shines-at-Good-Counsel-53610 ... And just and update on where Michigan stands nationally in recruiting; they have the #6 class in the country on Espn, the #3 class on 247 and Rivals, and they have the #2 class on Scout.

I just posted this in the other recruiting thread, but it's kinda buried down there:

Mason (the Whitmer play-by-play guy who was giving me the Wormley updates) announced a basketball game with Jayme's dad recently. Apparently Michigan is recruiting (hasn't offered) Thompson as a corner, but he prefers to play safety at the next level. His dad is telling him not to worry about it, but that might be playing a factor in his recruitment and Michigan's place in it.

Not sure what would happen if he committed elsewhere. Mattison is his recruiting contact, for what it's worth. [Edit: Or, at least, Mattison is the guy telling Thompson he's being recruited as a corner. Probably not the only coach recruiting him since he's the DC.]

You sir are an ass! Shut the hell up about Ace!  It takes a while to gain contacts with high school coaches, kids, and other reliable sources. He just started this year! He is building up his contacts with the 2013 kids so people need to stop criticizing him. This is a free blog! You should be thankful you can come here and get news updates for free.

Really man, stop being a prick. I'd love to see how you did when you first started your job - it never goes 100% smooth. Just chill out, let him get his feet wet and see how it is in a year. If it's this time next year and you're still not satisfied, at least you'll have some basis for your comments.  Personally, I think he does a fine job and will continue to get better as time goes on.

Ace, I'm confused...does he actually have an offer from Michigan? Obviously, it says no, but is he expecting one, then, or does this mean we're probably out of it? If the coaches don't respond?

It's just a little bewildering to see a kid announcing so early with a top three including a school that hasn't offered. I can't remember anything quite like this.

Pretty sure he doesn't have an offer—I've haven't got anything first-hand yet, just what I said above. I think the coaches are being pretty careful about who they give that second safety spot (along with Dymonte Thomas), and if they're not sold on Thompson at corner they may be waiting to see what happens with Yuri Wright and Armani Reeves. It's going to be a small-ish class next year.

I'll give you that it's a strange-sounding situation. I think Michigan would land him if they offered, but I have no idea if that's in the cards right now (but don't take that to mean that it's not—Mattison is in contact with him and he's visited, at the very least).

247 does, but none of the other sites do (though ESPN doesn't even show West Virginia offering). As I said, I don't have first-hand info on him, but I don't think he has one yet—if he did, I think he'd have jumped on it. 247 is very good at getting a lot of info out quickly, but they're not always 100% right, especially on the player profile pages.

FWIW, Scout is reporting (and it says as much in the free teaser, so I'm not giving away paywalled information) that the staff is in contact with a Las Vegas O-Lineman named Poutasi. 4-stars on scout and rivals, 3 star on ESPN.

It's almost enough to make you think the staff wants one more O-Lineman.

Again, for general interest, this Poutasi seems to have offers from a lot of the Western schools, but not from many of the brand names. Boise State, Oklahoma St. and Oregon are reported as having offered on Rivals, but that's about it. The rest are lower AQs like Wazzus, Arizona, etc. or non-AQs from Nevada and Hawaii to Idaho and UNLV, what have you.

Make what you will of the list.

Gibbs went to my high school. He's a really hard worker and a massive dude. If we could get him without even offereing a scholarship that would be huge for the OL depth. He may never play but he would be a solid backup

Does this situation remind anyone of the kid from Florida who wanted to commit, but didn't have an offer?  I think it was in the 2010 class, but I can't remember his name.

OL who could go to Penn or Dartmouth but chooses to play at U of M = High Quality Kid.  If he has the size and decent athletic ability I would not be surprised to see him work his way into the rotation down the line.  Just his decision making process, if he chooses to come to Michigan, reveals that he relishes a challenge and probably has a dynamite work ethic.  And as we see over and over, high intellect is a huge plus on the O-line.
