Ferentz the Gambler, or How Brian Cost Us the Iowa Game

Submitted by Ziff72 on

Nice job Brian, with all your smart ass remarks and statistical analysis. Who else was raging at the TV set when Ferentz started going all Romer on us and going for every 4th down? I guess it's the price of being Michigan that everyone despite our struggles gets up for us with extra game planning and intensity.

All year we've heard about the "puntosaur", but when Mich comes to town they throw caution to the wind.

But seriously, there are millions of instances to support my opinion. I'm just pointing to the OP's half-joking frustration. There are a lot of people who look at these numbers as a black and white decision. But the emotions of football make most of these numbers obsolete, or at the very least, barely relevant.

You mean like the time Iowa went for it on fourth-and-one, failed the quick snap dive, and gave Michigan a short field, from which they scored their TD?

Or maybe you were referring to the 4th-and-1 in the 4th that turned into a 4th-and-6 thanks to a twitchy center -- at which point Ferentz shut off his inner Brian/Mathlete and punted -- pinning M back on their own 4 late in the game (and M would end up giving it back to Iowa at the 36 with 4 minutes left)?

I'm guessing Ferentz learned the following lesson: go for it = bad; punt = good.

The 4th and 7 they converted that lead to a score. He punts in that situation 98.2% of the time I have it documented. So for him to go against his Puntosaur instincts was quite remarkable.

I commented to my GF during the game that "this is unbelievable, Ferentz never goes for it...this is a guy who's punted from the opponents 31..why is he doing this?"

no no its my fault. for the purdue game i posted it would a low scoring defensive struggle where they match us. not so much. then for iowa i posted it would be a blue blowout. also less not so much.

so i am officially now predicting um gets blown out in all 3 remaining games. it gets so bad they start bellamy, throw 99% of the time, play campbell and brink every play over the woefully ineffective mm and rvb. we go 0-3 and lose by a combined 90 points.

you guys can thank me in 3 weeks....

i'll take the blame for this one too, i gave up the traditional #1 jersey for a new M hoodie. it was so soft and comforting i couldn't not wear it. the question i have about that is should i have washed it first before wearing the first time, could that have made the difference. it will definately be washed before next saturday and IF i choose to wear it again an M loses, then anyone want a free hoodie?
