Ferentz is against satellite camps and guest coaches at university camps

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on

“Before they became so talked-about, we actually did two of them last year,” Ferentz told SiriusXM College Sports Nation. “They’re good experiences. We did three this year, and I don’t think we made the news for any of them. We don’t really broadcast it. We go out and do the same thing. “What it really gets down to is just how you want to use your time. Me personally, I’m hopeful — and the NCAA will probably react — my personal preference is I’d like to see camps probably be limited to campus. On top of that, I would support not allowing any outsiders coming to work your camp.”

Sounds like a shot at Harbaugh's publicity and Exposure U with the guest coaching part. Perhaps he's salty from Rudock transferring here?

Yeah, because you are IOWA.  Accept your state's marginal relevance for two weeks once every four and years and being totally irrelevant in every shape and form for the other 3 years and 350 days.

If the entire state of Iowa disappeared, how many days would it take for the nation to notice?  I'm guessing a few days but less than a week.

The only thing that comes out of there is the random Barstool Shokeshows from Iowa... and even they are the bottom of the barrel in terms of Smokeshows.  It's almost comical, if you're an avid reader, that it appears as if Iowa is running out of attractive women to publicize individually.

The carbonated beverage industry would collapse.  Millions of Americans would lose 30 pounds within months and become much healthier.

That's one benefit from making Iowa disappear.

Also, my annual drive from Ohio to Colorado would become 5 hours faster without Iowa in the way.  Another benefit.  From that POV, make Nebraska disappear as well.

I was thinking along those lines, too.  Ferentz has apparently entered the "relax, reflect and enjoy life" phase of his coaching career.  Unfortunately for his school, they are still paying him to work as hard as the "other guys" do.

Ferentz is not good for Iowa and he isn't good for overall Big Ten conference strength.  I hope he is enjoying his "semi-retirement."

He doesn't give any rationale. I can't see any reason Ferentz would be against this except that he has a reputation as a curmudgeon to uphold. Also, he makes it sound like Harbaugh is doing it to showboat, not to get recruits' attention.

That they don't like the camps because they are lazy.  For some of the ones named, like Meyer and Saban there are a lot of things you can (and do) say about them when it comes to recruiting, but lazy isn't true about them.

Kirk on the other hand?  His recruiting coordinator last year left to open a Culver's.  Iowa announced in 2013 they weren't going to bother recruiting in Florida.  Ferentz is like a young version of Paterno in the 2000s, except he is coasting on a much thinner resume.

Saban and the other SEC coaches are against the camps because they want to keep northern schools away from talented southern prospects.

Has Meyer said he's against camps?  I don't seem to recall him taking a position on it either way.

I think it's important to remember that Harbaugh not only has the full compliment of assistant coaches, but also a number of analysts and other non-coach staff to help run the program.  So if JH and some of his assistants go off for two weeks to run camps around the country, there are still plenty of people back in A2 to handle stuff.  That may not be the case with a program like Iowa; if Ferentz tried to run a similar camp circuit, then it may come at the cost of something else (that's even assuming Iowa and Ferentz could pull something like that off).  So, perhaps the real genius of the camps is that they become a way to leverage M's superior resources into an actual competitive advantage.

Perhaps Ferentz sees that, and that's why he objects to the camps.  Or maybe Ferentz is just a lazy-ass who can't keep his assistants from running off to flip burgers.

and I I don't really havet the time or interest.  Also, I don't mean to suggest the MGoBlog Collective hivemind is calling them lazy.  But I'm pretty sure I saw comments about Meyer to that effect, though I realize some of that may have something to do with his currenting employer.  :)  Meyer isn't thrilled with them but will do them if legal because he has the sense to realize he is foolish to not keep up with what Michigan is doing.

Saban has said it is at least partially about time and effort. That doesn't make him "lazy" in general, but a lot of SEC tears were verbalized as time/effort issues. I don't think a P5 CFB coach can be labeled as "lazy" relative to most people because of the demands of the job, but relative to their peers (and especially to their elite hyper-enthused peers) they can.

"We didn't get anyone because Iowa sucks, my team sucks and I suck so no one wants to come here and I don't like them any more."

Given that Ferentz makes so much money Iowa can't even afford to fire him, Ferentz has no incentive to do anything more than is absolutely required of him. If the NCAA bans sattelite campuses, he has an excuse to do less work for the same amount of money.

To me it comes down to hustle, and looking at things differently. We are fortunate that our Coach is attacking the day with enthusiasm unknown to mankind. At this point in the year I don't think these other coaches want to add this additional work/travel
