Fed investigation at MSU is, in fact, related to basketball player incident

Submitted by guthrie on

There has been some discussion about whether the federal investigation at MSU was started the way the investigation at UM started.  In other words, was it initiated by a complaint about the alleged assault by basketball players in 2010 similar to how it was initiated at UM by a complaint about the assault by Gibbons?

The RCMB (I know, I know) has been quick to point out that MSU's investigation is merely housekeeping and has nothing to do with the specific incident involving the basketball players.  Turns out, that's not true.

By the way, the names of the guys accused in 2010 at MSU have never actually been publicly released.  That's why I simply refer to them as basketball players.  They were described only as freshmen on the basketball team and MSU had four freshmen in that class.  We all think we know who the two guys were but there has NEVER been an official statement revealing their names.

We are curious how Detroit Press printed an article when they were not spoken to concerning Ashley. Ashley did NOT die by suicide! We tried clicking on the Detroit News link & it no longer works. We plan on contacting the Detroit News tomorrow. Yes, Ashley was raped by 4 MSU football players. MSU completely botched the investigations & did not investigate where they should have. The prosecutor, we heard, would not take the case. This same prosecutor was just fired because he, himself, was committing acts of sexual abuse. The case is NOT closed & we are now encouraged as we have taken other routes. MSU has very clearly protected their athletes & continue to do so. They also do not investigate rapes properly & do NOT follow Title IX Rules. They have lost court battle after court battle.

The Free Press is finally covering the connection between the MSU basketball program and the federal investigation, although they can't seem to report on anything involving MSU these days without injecting the Gibbons expulsion

The M-Live Green Wall, on the other hand, is still holding steady and refusing to report on anything connecting the basketball program to the federal investigation, even though the university confirmed the connection this past week. It's no coincidence that over half sports writers there are MSU alums.

I do not understand the reluctance to report the connection to the MSU basketball team, except for the public discomfort of watching a team play with players accused of sexual misconduct (even without disclosing the players's identities). Your theory about media favoritism is very plausible. Ironic that UM is publicly grilled for expelling a player while MSU is protected for NOT punishing 2 players. I'm wondering when reporters will perform their duty of inquiring with Izzo about the matter, just like reporters probed the topic with Hoke on signing day. For goodness sakes, Izzo alluded to it during his post game chat yesterday and no one showed a hint of professional curiosity.

The bias at M LIVE is far worse than at the Free Press and quite honestly as blatant as I've seen by any news publication. When M LIVE readers called out the MSU hoops beat writer over there, Gillian Van Stratt (MSU alum) for ignoring this story, especially in light of the number of articles M LIVE had written about Gibbons (mostly authored by MSU alum Nick Baumgardner), she told her readers that she looked into it and that it had nothing to do with the basketball program, and that should wouldn't hesitate to cover it if it later turned out that it was linked to the basketball program. The next day the university confirmed that the investigation WAS related to the Wonders Hall incident (which was first reported by the Lansing State Journal), yet M Live still refuses to cover it. The Moderator at M Live, Jen Eyer, is also a Michigan State alum and spends all day deleting comments that even so much as mention this story. I even saw a comment get deleted today where a reader asked the MSU beat writer about Izzo's comment that "outside distractions" played a role in the Illinois loss. #Green Wall

other journalists or bloggers to raise the story and hold these 2 publicly accountable for poor journalistic ethics. Heck, the MSU story seems like a full-blown MSU cover- up as opposed to a slow UM administration. Where is the ESPN guy Adam Rittenberg who stood on his soap box to state UM and Hoke needed to answer the questions? Where is Doug Smith? Where are the other gadflies?

parents need to talk to their kids about not getting into these situations. That's the males as well as females. No matter what the punishment, you can't take back what the victim went through. I realize kids don't always listen, but these cases highlight the need to do anything possible to protect your kids.

The lady in the Detroit News article said she would contact MSU. I hope she doesn't give up until she gets to the people doing the investigation. They are the ones who need to hear the story at this point.

Yeah that's a very serious allegation. She seems to be legit in that her facebook profile confirms that she did in fact have a daughter  who attended MSU and committed suicide about a year ago, but that comment was the first I had heard of anything remotely related to a gangrape perptrated by a group of MSU football players. I wouldn't be surprised to see this resurface in the next year or two.
