I refuse to join this group. In response, I am going to create an opposition facebook group in favor of Rawk music. If done with good taste, RAWK music can electrify the student section and create a home field advantage Death Valley could only dream of. With that said, the only stipulation I have is no Neil Diamond and Journey. Save Journey for Joe Louis Arena and Neil Diamond for Fenway. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=121710184510938

It's gets us (students) riled up which I am all for plus I like the songs they play. The real problem with the music in the Big House is the inability of students to hear the band. I mean it's only our school and team let's keep on blasting the opposite side of the stadium. I shouldn't be able to hear Notre Dame's band clear as day and only realize our band is playing when people start clapping and fist pumping. /rant off.

. . . but your wife sounds like she RAWKS! "Objection!" "Your honor, he opened the door to this line of remarks." "I'm going to allow it." "Thank you, your honor." All in fun. All in fun. You obviously started a great thread.

I think if you are just opposed to any piped in music, you are shit out of luck. I was against any at first, but when I heard it and the world didn't end, I accepted it. At times, I even liked it. But the fact is that we have it now, and its not going to stop. For me, and several other people on this thread, its more about how it is used. Timing, volume and song selection are the things that make the music good or bad, ime. For instance, I was sitting in the south endzone surrounded by OSU fans this last year. When Lose Yourself came on, it was great. The crowd got pumped up and gave the team some energy. However, there were several problems that need to be addressed. For instance, there was a long lull in the second half. The OSU fans took that time to cheer OH-IO and it was really loud. That would have been a perfect time to blast some Kid Rock and drown those fuckers out. Instead, we all listened to the enemy cheer in our home. Also, while I am a fan of Journey and the White Stripes, we need to know who our audience is. Don't Stop Believin and Seven Nation Army are OSU staples, and unfortunately, got the OSU crowd more fired up. I told some of them of the bands' Detroit connections, and hence a sort of connection with U of M, but that didn't stop them from claiming those songs as "theirs" because they played them first. Basically, we need to have a really talented DJ who is in sync with the crowd. I don't know who was in charge last year, but I was not impressed. Find some songs, like Lose Yourself, that have not been co-opted by another fan base ( so no Sweet Caroline, Don't Stop Believin, AC/DC etc) that U of M students can get behind. Play them in opportune spots, but don't drown out the band where they would traditionaly play (like after touchdowns). Use it as an adjunct and a home field asset, not gimmicky carbon copy of some other stadium experience. We should be better than that. And consider getting the team's input. Ask for songs the players would like to hear to get them pumped up. I doubt Journey would be a band they suggest. You don't have to use all of their choices, but pick a few that really work. Maybe have a contest to see who gets to be the DJ. Anyway, I think it can work but it needs serious improvement.

Especially the part about the getting the team's input, or at least playing songs they like. If the team gets into it, the crowd will guaranteed. I think MMB would do well to incorporate some songs into their book that would compete with piped in music. The chorus of Break Ya Neck comes to mind (1:10 in the song). That would work if they got a good arrangement of it and sold out playing it. Not holding my breath. X Gon' Give It To Ya would also be SICK in a MMB arrangement. Again, not holding my breath. If I had to pick one, I'd go for M's Gon' Give It To Ya. There are so many ways for the MMB to make RAWK music lame but they don't seem to want to do it.

i agree with some of the comments on here about the timing of when the music should be used and the correct song to use in that situation to hype people up. Tempo and Momentum shifts with a great song to be matched by it as the game goes along can be huge and uplifting for the players more so then the fans. I still stick by my thoughts as it isn't so much as the music affects the crowd, it is just a lot of times it was hard to get people to stand up and make some noise. It was so frustrating watching roughly 90,000 fans sitting in their seats *chirp chirp* on EVERY third down during some of the games.. Maybe people haven't figured out how hard it is on the other team to hear when 100,000+ are yelling. IDK just my 2 cents

Is that whoever's in charge of the music has AWFUL timing. During a timeout, they won't play anything for a few minutes. Then, right when the players are about to run back onto the field, they play the long intro to Lose Yourself. By the time, it gets to the good part, the play is about to start so they have to shut off the music. What a bunch of morons! Learn timing

But not cheap manipulation. The best music to me? The roar of the crowd when Michigan scores a meaningful TD. I'm an old crab, and I know it. But don't try to jerk me around to get me to yell when where is nothing to yell about. Don't pump Rawk music just to jack crowd emotions up. I'll stand all game, no problem. I'll yell 'til I'm hoarse. I'll cheer the team. I'll sing the Victors again and again. I'll gladly chant "Let's go blue" and "blue/gold." I'll smile at loud rap pumping out during workouts and the circle of death. But I hate the lame "keys" thing. And I hate most of all being told what to do and when to cheer, especially by morons who don't know when there is something really worth cheering about. If Rawk is just used to "pump you up," well, you can keep it.

As long as you aren't one of those fans that sit in their seat when it's third down for the opposing team, and I can hear crickets chirping in the crowd. I won't say it's always been like that, but with the last few years of struggle it has been a complete joke to get the fans to be behind the team. They need enough help as it is sometimes.
