I might have joined this before I saw the circle of terror in person. Keep the RAWK, albeit in a limited capacity. Ditch the 'Sweet Caroline' too, this isn't Fenway.

It seems to me that the ideal compromise is to play some really good circle of death music BEFORE the game. Get people into the Stadium earlier, to hear it. Especially students and younger fans. That's a good thing all the way around. Don't save it until the 3rd Quarter or whatever. Get there early, listen to the music and pump up our guys before the game.

The band isn't there before the game. Play all the music you want; as loud as you want. REALLY LOUD. But all before the game. I'd be happy if the whole Blue Lot, and the whole Golf Course could hear it.

But when the Michigan Marching Band enters the Stadium, then THEY are the music.

Save the cheap theatrics for the pro crowd. Michigan's fan base is intelligent enough to know when to make the house rock without being prompted by RAWK.

It is so cheesy. It's so "Silverdome." It is an embarassment. Journey, Queen, AC/DC; there was never a time when that was cool music. Not when it was new. That music went from 'garbage' to 'Stadium Rock' like bad movies go straight to video release.

...in Windsor, Ontario" isn't nearly as catchy, eh?

Neither is "Born and raised in River Rouge."

"Born and raised Down-ri-i-ver" doesn't really work.

I like all mentions of Detroit in songs, even if it doesn't make sense or is in a mega-cheesy song.

"Don't forget the Motor City!"

"Detroit! Heart of Rock and Roll."

"You gotta lose your mind in Detroit Rock City."

Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

to the whole "south detroit" term... the term came from a groupie that one of the band members brought back to the hotel after a show X amount of years ago... the next morning journey was leaving detroit but they had this groupie with them and they needed to take her home, they asked where she lived and she said south detroit... what she meant was south OF detroit meaning taylor... i heard the story on 97.1 when the morning show interviewed one of the guys from the band because journey was in town that night and playing at DTE in 2008...

by implication, is now to be thought of as a "Detroit" school? Is that progress? Is that a celebratory thing?

If that is where we're headed, I'll take Bobby Bare's "Last Night I Went to Sleep in Detroit City."

Dean Martin version:

I prefer Tom Jones' version personally; but you gotta love Dino.

Journey, Queen and AC/DC were never cool AND YET they are still played more than 3 decades later...

Please advice how this makes sense?

Who was it you listened to in 1980 when Queen's The Game was the number #1 album? Disco was big then. You a big disco guy?

Or perhaps you weren't born yet?

Under Pressure with David Bowie is one of the greatest songs of all time. Fat Bottomed Girls can't be denied either. I do agree wholeheartedly with your opinion on music in the stadium.

I don't discriminate against any kind of music. I haven't been to the Big House since they started pumping music in, but other stadiums in football and other sports do a good job of mixing old and young music with high energy to keep everyone involved.

A good song is a good song, no matter what the genre.

True...ok, so we have a local Ann Arbor rock band record a remake that sounds really smilar but changes the words so that it disses the buckeyes/spartans/delaware state hornets, then we can enjoy singing the hell out of it every year when we beat our rivals.

While I was at the games last year, the music was the only thing to really get the crowd going sometimes..

I sit behind the endzone opposite of the student section and NO fans ever stood up around us on 3rd down.. or got loud at all..

I will say the crowd was into it against WMU, but some of the music could be dumped

Notre Dame was the first time they pulled that out and the student section went batshit insane. Then they played it over and over and over and over and no one paid attention. Now when it comes on the students do a half-hearted arm chop.

WTF. This song sucked intestinal mucus the first time it crawled up my ass and died! I have to be subjected to it again while watching my favorite team? It's like listening to Pam Ward trying to call a close game. There isn't a bullet big enough or swift enough to end my pain when they crank up that miserable tune. Neg away, some things have to be said!

but I have never heard the fanbase so excited as I did for the ND game. People sang along and actually were excited by the music.

I'd take a louder Big House with more excited fans at the expense of hearing some Kid Rock.

Also regarding advertising, I don't like it but would rather have it than raise tuition, cut scholarships, increase ticket prices... When Michigan needs money (not now, but we will sometime in the future), this will happen.

The ads would be less painful knowing they were used to offset the operating costs of the University as a whole (not the athletic department only).

Make the RAWK music played have a Detroit theme. I'm thinking Iggy and the Stooges, MC5, Jack White (White Stripes & Racountoures), Eminem, Kid Rock, KISS, Motown . . . there are plenty of others I'm not thinking of right now.

MadMonkey

April 27th, 2010 at 12:39 PM ^

We would get Iggy Pop, of course. But, you will also get Marshall Crenshaw, Madonna, Eminem, Seger, all things Motown, etc . . .

My opposition is not to RAWK. To the extent that it enhances other fans' enjoyment of the Big House experience, I am happy to embrace the change. But, why succumb to mediocrity?

Your suggestion for MC5 is a good one. Music selections that are less pedestrian -- and unique to the big house -- will be far more interesting for Michigan's fanbase. Think of great college radio stations. The music selection is always more interesting than mass market treacle.

I would love to be able to hear the band but until they move the band so that I can hear them in Section 16 during the game then I am all for Rawk music but like everyone else no "Sweet Caroline" and RAWK music in a limited capacity.
