Favorite wins over Sparty

Submitted by WolverineHistorian on

First the favorite Spartan thread.  Then the 10 year anniversary Spartan Bob thread.  Then the most gut-wrenching loss to Sparty thread.

Look folks, Bo was right when he said it's easier to remember the losses than the wins but I think we're overdue for a favorite wins over Sparty thread.  We've got so much more to choose from with wins than losses.  So please post them here...please.

I would say 2007 because that is the first road game I ever went to and there was a very exciting finish.  I was at the 2004 game as well, but it was a little more fun to walk out of a stadium filled with deflated Spartan fans.

I was in the band, and it was my birthday. Close second would be the 2002 49-3 burial. One of my favorite pictures is the scoreboard from that game with 1 second left. Never forget!

Agree with this.  I wasn't in the band but I was in the stands.  That comeback was EPIC.  You could see Sparty knew it was going to happen and yet they were powerless to stop it.  Of course, the rest of the game prior to the comeback was horrendous.

Braylonfest hands down.  MSU fans thought the game was in hand in the 4th.  The  devastation that followed will live in my heart forever.

Definitely Braylonfest. Watching the State fans in our row walk out silently after the game was great. Probably my second favorite game I've ever seen only behind ND this year.

2004 - was at a friend's wedding watching in the hotel bar with a fellow walmart wolverine/diehard fan, an msu fan and an osu fan (all 3 being childhood friends).  Obviously Braylon; but after hearing crap from my osu fan buddy about not going to michigan, I lost my shit (verbally) and brought him to tears (literally).  Am I proud I made one of my best friends cry? No.  Am I proud I made an osu alum/fan cry?  Yes, yes I am. Also, Braylon.

Braylonfest. Game was such a blowout that my 14 year old self and friends went out trick or treating/trouble making.  We essentially watched Braylon torch the MSU secondary on every TV in the neighborhood, and made it home in time to see the ending. Best. Halloween. Ever.

Braylon triple OT, 2002 was great because it was payback for the Spatan Bob game and Lloyd said "Bobby Williams is a tremendous football coach" - after beating him 49-3.

Tomorrow will be one of my favorites - putting things back in order.

I have to go with 1997.  I was a freshman, and my girlfriend at the time had a family wedding in Kalamazoo that weekend.  I ended up staying in the hotel room while they went to the ceremony so I could watch the game.  Woodson's int. was just amazing.  The best part of the win, she went to State!

Also as you can see from my avatar, I am partial to th 2002 game (49-3, and it wasn't even that close).

The 1997 game comes to mind because the atmosphere was huge, Woodson made some huge plays, and we know how the season ended

Another example (forgot the year) was the 49-3 game in which we spotted MSU an early field goal, then beat their asses.  After the game, a reporter asked MSU coach Bobby Williams if he had lost control of the team and he responded with "I don't know".  He was fired the next day and that gave MSU John L Smith.  Not only was John L a car wreck to watch, but he gave us LaMarr Woodley (because he slapped him in the face on a recruiting visit), and the infamous Valenti rant.  So, that 49-3 game spawned a LOT of great memories.

Michigan wrapping up the sweep, Darius rubbing it in a little, and Izzo crying that we ran up the score.  It just doesn't get any better than that.

Oh, you were talking football.  Braylonfest.  Most of the others were blowouts.

(You want an internet meme...)

Wins over MSU are like Strong Bad with his emails.  They're my children.  I love them all.  But if I had to play favorites...

Remember that one time when Charles Woodson went way up into the sky along the sideline and made a one-handed catch, and somehow got a foot in bounds for an interception.

Or there was that other time when we were trailing by like 17 points, but then Braylon Edwards went nuts and caught a pair of end-zone jump balls to force the game into overtime, and then he caught another TD pass in the final OT and the defense finally held up and we won?

Those are great, I could watch them all day.  One question though.  Why was everyone so damned ugly in the 80s?  I mean everyone has 3 rows of teeth and overall just look like they need to shower.

Braylonfest, easily. I caught the 2nd half/OT with a buddy of mine at our favorite restaurant, which was full of Purdue fans that had an extreme hatred of Michigan. I got so much shit for telling them it wasn't over yet and some much joy out of seeing them get shut up so quickly. Was just one of those games where I -knew- Michigan was going to win and didn't care what the score was at any point.

I love the 1989 game where Tripp Welborne stoned Blake Ezor on 4th and 1. Welborne's stop take place around the 5:50 mark of this video.

At the end of this video Bo gives a post game speech telling the team this "this was the key game this was the game we had to win and we won it!"

Bo was right per usual. Michigan went on to win the Big Ten in Bo's final season, finishing 10-2 with a season opening loss to ND and a Rose Bowl loss to USC:(

Hopefully Hoke can give a similar speech tomorrow.

Thanks to WH for making this video available on the World Wide Web

getting the sweep over MSU at MSU  in '09 enroute to an improbable CCHA tournament title. Hearing the number of Michigan fans in Munn. Knowing that Tropp was injured stepping onto a puck and had to sit out and watch it all. Mmmm Spartan tears. Incredibly satisfying series

As if it wasn't strong enough before, 2001 built a seething hatred for MSU, the cheap, cheating way they do things there, and the outright glory they take in doing things that way. 2002 was the one and only time I cared about a game on the schedule more than OSU. There HAD to be a reckoning for what was done to that 2001 team...and they were "reckon'd"...big time. It's one of the few times you say "we REALLY need to beat these guys and make them pay", and we did it...and then some.  We could have laid triple digits on them and it wouldn't have been too many.  But it was good enough.

Wait, wait, wait.   I watch ESPN Classic and The Big Ten Network's Greatest Games on my TV.  You guys are saying that Michigan actually WON some of the games against MSU?

Right.

It was 2007, because it had everything: Robot Henne, comeback win, me sitting in the student section at MSU (not recommended for faint of heart or spirit), and then filling the stadium and the night with victory cries, cheers and songs!

I was volunteering at EMU's SID office and working the CMU-EMU game that day. I watched more more of the UM-MSU game then of the Eastern game. I thoroughly enjoyed the thrashing I saw that day. Vengeance for Clockgate, for the 51 loss in basketball, and the end of Bobby Wiliams. That game also inaugurated a 6 year string of wins over Sparty.

Henne's long ball to Manningham for the winning touchdown made me jump around my house screaming. Man what a play. I can see us winning 28-24 this weekend. I'd love for a repeat of a last minute thriller like that. I'd honestly love to win 42-0 lol.

I couldn't watch that game because I had a flight from JFK to Cairo, Egypt. I got on the plane and kept refreshing the score on my phone until I had to turn it off. The last update I got was that we were trailing 24-14 with 7:00 left. I spent that entire 10-hour flight thinking that we lost the game. When I arrived in Cairo and called my wife, I asked her how much we ended up losing by. She was like, "What are you talking about? We won 28-24." It had been a pretty crappy flight for lots of reasons, but hearing her tell me the score made it all better.

Braylonfest. I was supposed to go to that game with my buddy, but he became violently ill that morning and had to give his ticket to some random dude I didn't know. By the end of the game, me and that random dude became good friends. Amazing how sports can make two grown men who don't know each other chest-bump like old friends.
