Favorite UM - ND Sports Moment

Submitted by NHWolverine on
My favorite UM - ND sports moment, hands down, is the 2005 1st round walloping of the Irish Men's Ice Hockey Team. We embarrassed the Irish 10-1 in a game where we (as I recall) blew through all 3 goalies they brought to Ann Arbor and both of our backups (Montoya/ Ruden/ Mayhew) prompting my personal favorite Ice Hockey chant: "Goalie-Goalie-Goalie! Sieve-Sieve-Sieve!" Here's what's left of the presser on MGoBlue: http://j.mp/uaaD4 If we match the noise and intensity of Yost that day ND won't stand a chance Saturday. Any other all time favorites out there in MGoBlog land?

When Mark Messner puked on an ND lineman's shoes and then got around the surprised lineman to get a sack. I read it in What it Means to Be a Wolverine. I think that sums it up right about there.

for me. Goalie-Goalie-Goalie, Sieve-Sieve-Sieve is one. The other was a game against MSU - a butt-ton of penalties to both sides at one point, and we piped up in the student section: "We got the whoooole team, in the box We got the whoooole team, in the box We got the whoooooooole team, in the box We got the whole team in the box!" Amazing.

The Catch. Nothing else is really even close. This is one of the iconic Michigan Football moments. The other thing that should be remembered from the 1991 game was the way it ended. Michigan ran the ball right down ND's throat for about the last 5 minutes. The last drive didn't result in a score, but Ricky Powers and the OL just chewed up the end of the game, killing any Irish hope. The other positive memory (there are far too many negative memories) that the youngsters on here may not have been privy to was the 1994 drive at the end of regulation capped by Remy's FG FTW.

Really its Desmond's catch and then everything else. ND is the team who has "moments" in this series it seems. Desmond's catch deserves the iconic tag that you used. Every other moment is vying for second place. Also: I knew I could count on you to point out Powers running on the final drive. That is good stuff.

came after four consecutive opening game losses to the Irish. The catch was like a flash of lighting which brings the cooling rain during a long, hot summer.
1990: 24-28 10 pt 4th Qtr lead not enough
1989: 19-24 Rocket runs back *two* KOs
1988: 17-19 Ho's FG stands up
1987: 7-26 Can't recall; too much Stroh's?

Whenever my wife muses as to what to do with an undecorated, white-painted wall of our house, I always suggest that a mural of Desmond Howard, stretched out horizontally in the end zone, ball landing gently in his fingertips, would do nicely. Somehow she doesn't agree with me... there's no accounting for taste.

God I love watching the highlights from that game and hearing Haden say "oh wide open" with disgust in his voice. Like he didn't want to be bothered with an actual play whilst telling a story. "Oh wide open." I'd love to have that made into a ringtone. I love the fact that 5th year seniors who graduated in '07 had bookend 38-0 wins over ND with a 47-21 win at ND mixed in.

Everything about the 2006 game. They were ranked higher than us, it was in South Bend, and we gave them the biggest ass whooping they have ever experienced at home. Set the tone for the rest of the season.

I was at that game and leaving Notre Dame stadium that afternoon is one of my favorite football related memories ever. UofM fans singing The Victors and screaming "It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine" could be heard more than 30 minutes after the game echoing through the ramps used to exit. Thinking about that still gives me goosebumps. Still "The Catch" is better.

I'd have to go with Mario's 3rd touchdown in 2006. Maybe it's just because I'm a pessimist, but it took until that moment for me to go from "Lloyd can't blow this, can he?" worry to "We're killing these guys!" celebration for the rest of the game.

A lot of great ones, but I have to go with the game-winning drive in '94. ND scored a TD with 52 seconds left, seemingly clinching it and cementing Ron Powlus's status as a future Heisman winner . . . until we shut them up.

I would have to say the catch. On a personal note, when I was 12 I was able to come with my family to the ND game and got to see my older bro' get on the field for his first play. That was pretty cool too.

No doubt. I was a junior at U of M and had endured 4 straight years of losing to Lou Holtz and his band of Catholics. Desmond made The Catch and I sat in the stands for probably about half an hour after the game was over just smiling.

The 2006 game, what an awesome ass whooping. I couldn't remember the second half due to a few too many celebratory beverages in the first half. Man, some crazy things went down in celebration, what a win!

I was a senior, and we had lost 2 years in a row. The pick-6 on Quinn's first throw was awesome enough, but at that point there was a long way to go. But after that first long TD pass to Manningham, my friends and I were going nuts. It was terrific. If only we could have beaten OSU that year...

Mike Hart's guarantee in 2007. I took his word for it and planned my proposal to my girlfriend around it. 38-0 made for an awesome day with her in the Big House followed up with a fantastic night.
