Favorite Team Championships

Submitted by bdubya on
I was just wondering if the overall success (or lack thereof) of my favorite teams was around the norm for other fans, or if you guys were a little more lucky than me. I'm 22 years old, and in that time, my favorite sports teams in the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, NCAA FB and BB have won 3 championships. The last one was Michigan in 1997. Since I have been a serious fan (teens and above), only one team has made it to a championship. That team was the 76ers in 2001, who promptly were escorted out in a 4-1 "series" with the Lakers. How many championships do you guys have from your favorite teams? I'm hoping for your sake that you are a little more successful, and I'm guessing with the Wings and Pistons fans that are sure to be here that you will be. For the record, I have M in '89 (3 years old) and '97, and I have the Braves in '95.

Red Wings '97 '98 '02 '08 Pistons '89 '90 '04 Tigers Pennant '06 Michigan Hockey '96 '98 Michigan Basketball '89 Michigan Football '97 Lions......lol I have been extremely lucky with my teams doing well since I've been alive (barring tigers collapses and the lions being the worst franchise in the history of the universe....). I was pretty young for the early pistons titles and Michigan's basketball title, but it was still awesome. The most memorable were the wings and u-m football in 97. damn 97 was a great year.

I only sort of count the Pistons '89 and '90 titles. I was seven and eight. Old enough to know that that was really cool and get excited, but it's just not the same as when you know what's going on and how hard it really is to win a championship. Same goes for Michigan's basketball title. First time I ever really saw a team of mine win a championship was the Wings in '97.

My allegiances have changed four times. Once, upon the founding of the Carolina Panthers, once when the Hurricanes came to the Carolinas, when the Hornets moved to New Orleans, and again when I became a Michigan student in the fall of 2008. MLB- Braves, 1995 NCAA BB- Duke in 2001, Michigan is now my favorite team NCAA FB- Although I wasn't a Michigan fan at the time, I did cheer for them in the Rose Bowl. NFL- Dallas 1995, now a Carolina Panthers fan. One Super Bowl appearance, but no championship. NHL- Hurricanes, 2006 NBA- The Hornets left and Michael Jordan has ruined the Bobcats. The NBA is dead to me.

I'm from Connecticut so this is an eclectic mix, also I'm only 21. NFL: Miami Dolphins, none NBA: Miami Heat, '05 MLB: Mets, none NHL: Hartford Whalers moved in '97 after being notoriously mediocre, I've adopted the caps since I started college in DC so there's some hope. NCAAFB: Michigan, obviously in '97 NCAAB: Michigan basketball in '89 (I was 1) and UCONN in '99 and '04

I'm dating myself here, but I've been fortunate to experience these: Red Wings - '97, '98, '02, '08 Pistons - '89, '90, '04 Tigers - '84 U-M Football - '97 U-M Hockey - '96, '98 U-M Basketball - '89 Average Joe's Gym - '04 The 1989 U-M B-Ball Championship is by far the most memorable for me. Not only was it unexpected, but the coaching change provided some extra drama. Actually knowing some of the players at the time made it even more enjoyable, and I can remember (not sure how) the mayhem that followed on South U. like it was yesterday. Wow, good times for sure.

I can relate to you TC, well except that I have the Bulls. But I think they get balanced out by the Bears and the Cubs. UM football- 97 UM Basketball- 89 (doesn't really count since I didn't have memories yet) UM hockey- 96, 98 Bulls- 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98 (woot!) Bears- NONE (I had to be born in 1986, just in time for 15 years of terrible Bears teams, didn't I) Cubs- NONE (duh) Blackhawks- NONE (although hopefully that will change shortly) I was a huge 49ers (mostly Jerry Rice) fan growing up, so I guess those ones kinda count, but it feels like cheating so I'll just stick with my Bears.

NHL: Red Wings back to back in 1997 and 1998. 2002 and 2008 NCAA: Michigan in 1997 NCAA Hockey: Michigan 1996 and 1998 NFL: 1997 Green Bay Packers Olympics: 2002 Team Canada wins the gold medal and 1996 World Cup of Hockey won by USA But I've got some others that aren't favorite team championships but they are moments in history. 2001 Colorado Avalanche Ray Borque lifts his first Stanley Cup after 22 years in the NHL.
