Favorite players by jersey numbers

Submitted by Eat Your Wheatlies on

I'm sure this has been done before, but an Ohio fan and myself usually have some sort of random contest/test of fandom the week leading up to The Game every year.

So #1-#10 who are your favorite Wolverines all-time?

I'll get us started #1-5, but I'm sure it will show my generation. Figured it could give us somthing to do throughout the night if we want to extend the list...

#1- Anthony Carter

#2- Charles Woodson

#3- Tripp Welborne

#4- Jimmy Harbaugh

#5- Erik Campbell?

I lied, I'm going to 6...

#6- Tyrone Wheatley

Hope this provides some entertainment while we drink tonight...

...worst injustice is that the only college highlight people associate with him is Kordell Stewart's Hail Mary.  He was a magnificent DB at Michigan and one of the best in the NFL for a long while.

Top-5 Michigan teams of all-time
1. 1901-1904 Point A Minute Teams
2. 1947
3. 1997
4. 1932
5. 1933

Top-5 Michigan teams that didn't win the big one
1. 1973
2. 1992
3. 2003
4. 1985
5. 2006

  1. 1973- 10-0-1 record: The infamous tie against ohio stopped Michigan from a perfect season. Despite Michigan outplaying ohio, the Big Ten ADs voted ohio to go to the Rose Bowl. Michigan was selected as a national champion by the NCF. The university has yet to release any statement and/or acknowledge the selection.
  2. 1992- 9-0-3 record: Michigan mumbled and bumbled to 3 frustrating ties against notre dame on the road, illinois at home and ohio on the road. Michigan won a Rose Bowl shootout that year.
  3. 2003- 10-3 record: Had the talent, but didn't have the luck. Lost their regular season games by a combined 7 points. Got beat by eventual AP national champion USC in the Rose Bowl.
  4. 1985- 10-1-1 record: Lost 12-10 to iowa on the road in a #1 vs #2 matchup. iowa scored all of their points on FGs. Michigan tied a vastly inferior illinois team 3-3. Michigan beat nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl to close out the year.
  5. 2006- 11-2 record: We all know what happened. I rather not talk about because it still pains me to this day.

Disagree on your "didnt win the big one list"

1. 1973 - Agreed

2. 1971 - 11-1 Record: Outscored opposition 414 - 83.  Only loss 13-12 in Rose Bowl to Stanford

3. 1974 - 10-1 Record: Outscored opposition 328 - 75.  Only loss 12-10 to OSU in which Michigan's kicker Mike Lantry wasnt given credit for a game winning kick despite it going through the uprights with 16 seconds to go (on BTN today)

4. 1985 - Agreed

5. 2006 - Agreed

I dont think the 92  team nor the 2003 team's belong on this list.  They were good but nothing compared to the 1972-1974 juggernaut Bo assembled.  FYI - his starting QB Dennis Franklin went 30-2-1 in his three years as a starter and never even went to a bowl game!

... the Wheatley game was awesome.  I was wondering how we'd get back in it when he broke the 90+ yard run and thereafter I had no doubt.  He just looked invincible that day.

The 2003 team ran into a complete buzzsaw in the Rose Bowl.  I know some people who thought that the game would have been very different if Braylon had held onto the deep bomb that slid through his hands, but that was one of the few times he got open and one of the even fewer times USC didn't just crush the protection.  USC had 9 sacks, and I remember wondering how high one of the LBs and DEs would go in the draft, since they seemingly lived in our backfield.  (Lofa Tatupu and Kenechi Udeze, for those who remember.  Udeze had a good rookie year but got hurt and then got a lymphoma diagnosis - he's currently a S&C coach at Washington, I think.  Tatupu is a free agent who is recovering from a torn pectoral muscle.  Those guys were good.)

The other guy I remember from that USC team wasn't Leinert - he was good, but not dominating us like I would have expected a future top NFL pick to do; some of his throws floated, and he didn't really take advantage of the complete stifling of our offense - but this skinny redshirted RB who seemingly disapparated through tacklers and reappeared moving at full speed.  Some kid named Reggie Bush.

That USC team was absolutely friggin' loaded.  Don't remember how many future NFL players were on their roster, but it looked like there were a ton.  (The three I mentioned above plus Mike Williams, Lendale White and Matt Leinert - Winston Justice was at tackle, and Sedric Ellis was a future DE.)

Holy cow.  I just went and checked and ... well, see for yourselves:

I've always been partial to the '95 team.  Maybe because of the names -- they had Horn, King, Steele, Swett, Irons and Sword on defense and Toomer, Griese and Payne on O.  Always thought Mercury Hayes and Riemersma were cool names too.

Love Desmond, but I'd go with 21 = Tshimanga Biakabutuka.  A great name and greatest individual running day I've seen against real competition and part of the '95 team.

Also really liked Jon Runyan #69.

Since you bring it up, that '95 team, or maybe it was '96, our regular/starting D featured guys with the names Irons, Gold, Steele, Sword, Swett, and Huff. Always struck me, that collection of nouns, all on the defense at the same time. There was also a King and a Knight on that team.

Avant's Hands

November 23rd, 2012 at 10:29 PM ^

Of course I'm biased, but I think #8 should go to Avant. Nothing against Howard, but there is a reason we hope that every non-burner receiver that commits here is the next Avant. It took an imaginary 9-foot receiver to cause an incomplete pass if it was thrown in Avant's general direction.
