Favorite announcer calls
http://joeposnanski.si.com/2010/10/14/thirty-two-great-calls-2/?eref=sihp
Si.com has a good concept but poor read on favorite calls of all time. The author lumps his favorite college football calls together into one category because, "College football calls are so personal. They mean SO MUCH to the team’s fans, and SO LITTLE to everyone else." That's so stupid, becasue that could be said about any sport with a hometeam, but I digress.
What's your favorite U of M call? Either radio or TV..."Hello Heisman!" "Shades of Desmond Howard" Something from Bob Ufer?
On a personal note, I loved it when I was a kid and Musberger would open NFL Today with "You are looking at live..." He'll still do that for the big college games he announces, and i love it, even if he's losing it.

Anything Gus Johnson is always a +1 in my book. Rise and Fire!

to be their lead or number 2 announcer. He's too exciting to waste on Bills vs. Bengals

"Whoa Nelly, let me tell you about Charles Woodson, 6'1" out of Fremont, Ohio."
Keith Jackson, seemingly after every play during the entire 1997 season

Heisman!

Boom goes the dynamite.

from the year all of us want wiped from our memory, but...
"Minor is...MAJOR!"
October 14th, 2010 at 1:54 PM ^
for sure. I'm pretty certain that Ufer only means something to Michigan fans, but nothing tops Ufer. He was one of the first to really be a homer, so that may have legs beyond Ann Arbor.

"Streaking down the field like a penguin with a hot herring in his cummerbund!"
I discovered last year that my dad was at that game, even though I'd never heard him talk about it before. I could listen to that call for hours.

Monday night football, Green Bay vs the Vikings...."He Did What!?"

The Antonio Freeman catch, eh?

You Betcha!

By far my favorite is Jackson's call. Because Keith Jackson is on the Mount Rushmore of announcers and because it's against Ohio State and the play/aftermath is so spectacular and Jackson just nails it.
October 14th, 2010 at 1:56 PM ^
It's definitely HELLOOOOOOOOOOO HEISMAN!
October 14th, 2010 at 2:07 PM ^
But I was alway a fan of John Madden saying "usually the team that scores more point wins"

not so much for the TD and the win but for the absolutely flagrant violation of the "no cheering in the press box" rule. They are going out of their freakin' minds after Carter scores. Priceless.

"broken plays are very...dangerous from a kid like this. Look at that speed! See ya!"
October 14th, 2010 at 2:04 PM ^
How about this one:
"He's to midfield, and they'll never catch him. Denard Robinson.........shoelaces flopping in the wind, goes 87 yards for the Michigan touchdown."
October 14th, 2010 at 2:21 PM ^
I just like the "and they'll never catch him." part of that one. I think that statement might be applicable to Denard (and his records) for a long time.
October 14th, 2010 at 8:09 PM ^
"You can't, simulate, speed!" after Denard scored?

And here we are in Columbus in front of a sellout crowd of 10,000 alumni and 74,000 truck drivers.
October 14th, 2010 at 2:04 PM ^
is it for me. But this year's "shoelaces flapping in the wind" from ND was pretty strong too.

My favorite Michgian call is the call on Henne to Manningham to take the lead against MSU in EL in 2007. I just loved the way the guy said "Manningham". It was a combination of excitement and disbelief at the play and the comeback.
My favorite call in all of sports was from Red Sox radio play by play man Joe Castiglione after the 2004 ALCS game 7. "Ground ball to 2nd base. Pokey Reese has it. And the Boston Red Sox have completed the greatest victory in team history." I get goosebumps just typing it.

"TOUCH-DOWN MIIIICHIGAN!"
October 14th, 2010 at 2:10 PM ^
At one point during the 1997 Penn State game, Brian Grise went off on a rare-for-a-Michigan-QB-back-then 30 yard scramble. After the run Keith Jackson said "That's the fastest Brian Griese's run since he was a kid and his daddy was chasin' him with a stick!" (Bob Griese was obviously calling the game with Keith). Obscure, but funny.
Honestly though, my favorite call would definitely have to be Bob Ufer's call of the Carter touchdown to beat IU in '79 ... by the time Carter made it to the end zone Ufer's voice was completely obscured by the crowd cheering and those General Patton horns going off. You didn't need to hear him say the word "touchdown" to know what happened. Beautiful freaking thing.
October 14th, 2010 at 3:37 PM ^
The crowd is storming the field! THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO KICK THE EXTRA POINT! {Voice cracking.} WHO GIVES A DAMN??????
October 14th, 2010 at 2:09 PM ^
"Thats 6"
Millen is good for something at least

"Oh, NICE" is up there with the short but sweet comments from this season
October 15th, 2010 at 1:55 AM ^
That was my favorite from this year for sure. Was just so matter of fact the way he said it.
October 14th, 2010 at 2:10 PM ^
Loved Beckmann's call of Wheatley's first 2 TD's in that game. Also can't deny Ufer's poem about the '69 OSU and "..they laid Woody Hayes away."
October 14th, 2010 at 2:11 PM ^
"Henne fires to the endzone, TOUCHDOWN MANNINGHAM!!! MICHIGAN WINS!!!"
October 14th, 2010 at 2:12 PM ^
the band is on the field!!!
October 14th, 2010 at 7:14 PM ^
WILL IT COUNT!?!? The Bears have scored, but the bands are out on the field! There were flags all over the place. Wait and see what happens—we don't know who won the game! There are flags on the field. We have to see whether or not the flags are against Stanford or Cal. The Bears may have made some illegal laterals. It could be that it won't count. The Bears, believe it or not, took it all the way into the end zone. If the penalty is against Stanford, California would win the game. If it is not, the game is over and Stanford has won.
We've heard no decision yet. Everybody is milling around on the FIELD—AND THE BEARS!! THE BEARS HAVE WON!!! The Bears have won! Oh, my God! The most amazing, sensational, dramatic, heart-rending... exciting, thrilling finish in the history of college football! California has won the Big Game over Stanford! Oh, excuse me for my voice, but I have never, never seen anything like it in the history of I have ever seen any game in my life!

"What is she doing?"
October 14th, 2010 at 2:15 PM ^
The entire clip that is on the different Ufer CD's is awesome. From Ufer's call of OSU tearing down the Go Blue Banner to the Dennis Franklin fake. It is awesome.
BTW, this Saturday is the 29th anniversary of Ufer's last game in Michigan Stadium, incidentally also against the Hawkeyes. Be sure to play some Ufer at your tailgate!

THEY WILL SUFFER A DASTARDLY FATE FOR THIS
October 14th, 2010 at 2:21 PM ^
My favorite Keith Jackson-ism ever, from his last game (the USC-Texas 2006 title game), in reference to a 300-plus pound freshman Texas D-lineman:
"If he keeps eating his cornbread, he'll be man-sized one day."
Beautiful. Just beautiful. If there was a way to Futurama-style preserve Jackson's head in a jar and have the head call college football games for eternity, I'd be a very happy man.

And Denard cements the Heisman with a riveting run over the Buckeyes, as Michigan thumps ohio state, behind an electric 300 yards on the ground and 300 in the air from Denard Shoelace Robinson.

Pittsburgh Penuins old announcers with his 'Lemieux beats him like a rented mule!'
Was looking on youtube for this to make a Lewan version but couldn't find one.

How about Tirico's, "HE TOOK IT AWAY! WHAT A SPECTACULAR TOUCHDOWN!" In 2004 Michigan vs MSU. Braylonfest!

"And Dempsey is denied again, and Donovan has scored!!! Oh, can you believe this?!?! Go, Go USA!!! Certainly through!!! AAAWWOOOHHH it's incredible!!!!!"
