Farewell to the Palace: Pistons vs. Wizards thread

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on

It's the end of an era from the Bad Boys to Chauncey Billups. Next year they move to Pizzarena.

at The Palace, and they did a good job of keeping it fresh as it aged. Hoping a better team welcomes the Pistons to LCA than the one that's gracing The Palace on its way out.

While it is the home of the Pistons three titles, I hate that place. Really annoying to go to a game there IMO. I'm from SE Michigan, about five minutes from the Ohio border, but I'll go to more Pistons games now that they'll be downtown.

The reality for some of us is this right here - when I lived in Ann Arbor and we were going to Bad Boys era games, it was a trek. When I bought my own home downriver and we were going to see those 2003-04 teams, it was still a trek. The Palace was a great venue, but LCA is going to be far more convenient for those of us west and south of Detroit. Admittedly, it's selfish, but it opens the door for more Pistons games.

It's good for Detroit that they're moving downtown but it's still surreal to me that they're leaving the Palace.  I remember when it was opened - doesn't seem that long ago.

The problem with that is once it becomes apparent that a city won't finance a new arena, many owners will then move the team to a new city that will build them their new stadium. It is capitalism 101. Thats one of the reasons the NFL is having three teams relocated, and the reason why in recent years the 49ers left San Fran, the Sonics left Seattle (For OKC!), and the Expos left Montreal.

The situation with the Expos was a little more complicated than that.  They were bought by a man (Jeffrey Loria) who never wanted the team to stay in Montreal, and he basically destroyed the franchise and salted the earth beneath it.  They didn't even have a local TV deal the last few years.  MLB then rewarded him by taking the massively-devalued franchise off his hands and letting him buy the Marlins.  Loria and Bud Selig were later sued by the minority partners of the franchise for racketeering.

as it is the teams and how fervent the love for each team. Like it or not, the Pistons finish last in practically every measure of popularity of the 4 Detroit pro franchises. While the Pistons will benefit from the move back to Detroit, they'll likely never get the love the Red Wings, Tigers, and even Lions enjoy. Other than the "Bad Boys" era and the 2004 Championship team, the Pistons just don't move the needle for many Detroit sports fans.

I've always felt like the Pistons had a far more regional fanbase after the move to the Palace. They were much more popular in Oakland County and the East Side in general, and pretty much didn't register interest on the other side of town. Meanwhile, everyone loved the Tigers, Red Wings, and Lions, even when they were bad.

Not always.  During the '80s, when the Pistons had Isiah and were gradually building a winner, they were drawing huge crowds (60,000 for one regular-season game), while the Wings were laboring through their "Dead Wing" era.  Not that many people were into the Wings at that time.   The long playoff streak has converted a lot of people.
