Fab Five Movie Open Thread

Submitted by M-Wolverine on

Seems like an odd time to talk about the past when there's finally so much in the present to talk about, but we're under an hour away from the movie premiere on ESPN. If anyone has any thoughts on their Fab Five experience, to get us warmed up for the movie, let's hear them. And then we can pop the popcorn, and cozy up for the broadcast, which should be interesting, if nothing else. Like I said somewhere else here, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.... And it's time to relive them, or experience them for the first time.

This is true. I'm still convinced that one of the reasons Michigan athletics as a whole was so successful in the 90's was due to the high profile the Fab Five gave Michigan. Their popularity transcended their sport and Michigan benefited for years afterward. It came with a double-edged sword obviously, but still....

I find it funny that the sharties over at tRCMB find the time to rip on the documentary, but it's funny knowing that they are watching it and feeling the need to comment on it

People need to step back from their stupid rivalries and appreciate sports for what it is. There are many times while watching Michigan play MSU or OSU in any sport and I'm able to appreciate a beautiful pass or sweet dunk one of their players does. Hell, I've watched a documentary about Woody Hayes and Ohio State and loved it. It is sometimes nice to be able to just enjoy sports regardless of the team or players.

They're just pissed because MSU basketball was irrelevant in the early 90's. Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and OSU were the elite of the Big 10 back then. It's always fun to listen to Sparty talk about the "tradition" and "passion" of MSU basketball fans when I remember Jenison Fieldhouse being consistently a quarter empty for MSU home games because the Spartans were a mediocre basketball team that couldn't compete with Michigan on the recuiting front.

but was I the only one who forgot how sneaky good Rob Pelinka was?

Gotta love Jalen. There is nothing like a straight shooter. Thanks to all those guys and also to Coach Fish for one hell of a ride. Long live the 5!

That was so bittersweet to watch. I remember all of those key games based on where I was and who I was watching with. I was a sophomore at UM when the Fab 5 came to town and it was an amazing 2 year roller coaster ride. They brought us so many range of emotions and reliving them tonight was eerie. Like it was yesterday. I'm so pumped for next Friday, its not even funny. Go Blue!

which is why I really never fully understood why he would take money...he came from a decent family, great high school and he was going to be a top 5 pick...why he felt he need to take money is beyond me

I guess we'll never know until he comes out and tells his side of the story

I think it has something to do with feeling exploited. Everyone else was making money off the Fab Five except for the people in the Fab Five. There's a couple stories about ways in which they resented the money Nike made off of them and they noticed.

Edit: never mind I think it started before Webber became famous. Sorry, I'm 22 so this is all sort of new to me.

Wow, a lot of different emotions watching everything unfold again. Always loved J Rose but that took it to another level. I wonder if my son would mind if I changed his name from Zeke to Jalen?

I thought the movie was really well done. That long walk of shame for C Webb that they let play seemed to last forever. I can't hate on him. I don't think it is right to judge the kid. The man could handle it better but I encounter a lot of adults who could handle things better.

I'm thankful I was in school in 89....what a freaking party that was...but the Fab 5 will be the most special to me. That made me believe I could do anything.

One of the best sports documentaries I have seen. What really pisses me off is that I was watching it in my dorm room (I go to Michigan) and my roommate - who is completely clueless as to who the Fab 5 are - decides to walk in and start up a conversation about how he finally used up all of his scratch paper, during THE LAST 10 MINUTES OF THE MOVIE. Oh well, just will have to watch it again...and again.

Beyond the apology, it is possible the school might want to know whether Webber chose Michigan because of Martin's inducements? To this day it isn't clear. Perhaps if talking to Webber privately can shed light on that, they'll move forward accordingly.

Martin was way too deeply involved with players and was likely funneling them later in the 90s. But did he funnel the lone silent member of this particular famous recruiting class? It didn't appear so from the documentary.

Ultimately, Webber was clearly ineligible and Rose admitted taking money in the doc, making him ineligible to. The Unversity might never hang the banners anyways.

We know your a spartan and wanted CWebb to end up at state, is that what your getting at with your funneling comment? Every goddamn post you make you find a way to bring everyone down. Webber and Rose ineligible, blah blah blah, never hanging the banners, blah blah blah. You and your street urchin quote can get bent!

The Fab 5 is the reason i became a Michigan fan in Louisiana. I get alot of heat from all of these lsu fans but programs like this is why i stay true. Jalen Rose has just become my favorite Wolverine.

I was a Fr during the 2nd year. So many memories. Made my wife watch it. 15 min in she was hooked and watched the whole thing til late even though she's gotta 5am wake up. That speaks to what a story this is.

I remember loving the fab five and buying the shorts, etc but i did always think of jalen as a sort of punk smart ass. But over the years he has shown what a great person he is. This was just another example of that. He was mature beyond his years back then and yet would put on that game face during the game. Incredible.
We should be very proud that he represents UofM.
Go Jalen.
Go Blue.

They talk about how Nike would sell everything with the phrase Fab Five and the amount of money they made for the U makes it pretty easy to understand why they (actually just Chris the one who didn't need it) took the money.

I have to admit though, in the middle of watching it, I thought CW not contributing his side felt a bit empty. Overall I do want to own a copy of this show.

Compare Webber's reaction to getting blown out by Duke to the one after the Carolina game... just stunning... I'm so happy for Jalen Rose... and I was watching the film and following along on Twitter and I have to tell you, I was touched to see a few of the current Wolverines (like Tim Hardaway, Jr.) promising to put up banners that won't be taken down and others asking C-Webb to "come home"...

I also liked how the doc touched on the notion that these guys weren't just slam dunkin', trash-talkin' renegades who ignored their coach... they knew and respected the game, and were coached well and listened to Coach Fisher (at least most of the time, they did)...

Only down note for me was hearing my roommate's boyfriend, a USC grad, laughing during C-Webb's long walk to the locker room after the Carolina game... but he'll be dealt with in short order...

Anyway, make no mistake, this was not just a great night for Jalen Rose and the legacy of the Fab Five, but for the University of Michigan...

I can't imagine having a team like this right now. Honestly I don't think the reaction from the fanbase (racism etc) would be much different now than it was then. I think that's wrong. I would love a team like that. But I don't think portions of the fanbase agree.

Oh my god Chris Webber was an amazing basketball player. Jimmy and Ray were pretty damn good too even if they didn't quite make it in the NBA.

Being from California and being obsessed with Michigan since I was a kid (Dad is alumni, so am I) my friends have always given me shit about loving our great University so blindly. And since my friends have only paid attention to sports since lyin' ass Tressel started kicking our ass I get even more shit for liking a "weak-ass" school. I hope this proves to them and other non-rival fans that Michigan was the absolute SHIZNIT in the '90's and that the Fab Five is the reason they wear black socks and baggy bball shorts. Man do we need that swagger back!!!

My earliest UM memories are of Charles Woodson with a Rose in his teeth and a puck deflecting just right off a BC players skate and ending up in the net as well as Tractor Trayloyr dunkin' over Duke at Cameron, so I am too young to remember the Fab Five, but this doc re-confirmed why my love of this University is so much apart of my indenity(as painful as it sometimes is). GO BLUE!!!!

My favorite part may have been at the end when Jalen said "Yeah, we wanted to win two national championships. But who won the title three years ago? Five years ago? What was the lineup of the North Carolina team that beat us?"

The one part I wish they touched on, even if briefly, was that four of them have college degrees, and Juwan's dedication to get his on time (staying enrolled, studying on planes in his NBA rookie year) was truly remarkable. Makes all the critics who called them thugs look like idiots.

That was very nostalgic. Took me back to my college days. The glorious party on South U after Michigan beat Kentucky. The misery of the UNC game. The disappointment of never winning the conference championship.

I look foward to the day when we can embrace all the Fab Five and put the ugly part of the legacy behind us and finally we'll have healed.
